frankie Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 You've been buying a massive amount of books, Gaia Way to go! I'm now taking a closer look and will comment. Okay, I have to say that the majority of the books were by authors I've never even heard of And some were fantasy/sci-fi that I haven't read. So maybe I don't have an awful lot to comment after all....Steven Jay Schneider - 101 Cult Movies You Must See Before You DieThis sounds terribly interesting! I think I'm going to google and see if I can find the list somewhere... The next book fair I'll go to is in May so I should hopefully be okay for a while. I might buy some books in the charity shop but I'll try and not buy lots of books online etc. Anyway, I had a lot of fun at the book fair. Another one in May? That's only a month away or so! You need to start oiling those wheels of the book trolley... We can't have any squeaking and mal-functioning at the actual book fair site! You are so lucky to be able to attend so many bookfairs. I terribly miss going to one I bought some more books, most of which were cheap second hand copies from the charity shop. I was planning on buying one book, but one of the women at the counter recognised me and remembered I like English books so she went to the back and found some for me. This was very kind but I was too overwhelmed to think properly about whether I wanted to read them or not. They all do sound interesting and they were pretty cheap, but I felt like it'd be strange to refuse some, as well. I should be more assertive That's so nice that the lady recognized you and went back to see what she could offer you! I know how you feel, it's so easy to start feeling like you have to then take the books because the lady took the time and 'trouble' to fetch those books especially for you... But try not to worry next time, you don't have to buy anything you don't really want! I know it's easy to say, though, and a lot harder to do... I was given this book for free upon purchase of two other books:Stephenie Meyer - Twilight: Het Tweede Korte Leven van Bree Tanner (The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner)which I already was given from my grandparents some years ago. I have read the Twilight books but don't own them (my sister does), I haven't yet read this short book. I plan to see which copy is nicest and then give the other one to charity or someone who might like it.I plan to buy more books soon, terrible. Oh, that's so nice that you got a free book! I hope you can find someone who would really like it Or maybe you've already given it to charity. I bought a lot of second hand books at the local book shop in the next town over. They're having difficulties and I hope they'll keep existing. I'll post a list later when I've sorted out the books (the lady at the counter gave me two of the books I picked for free). We also bought some used old DVDs from the same shop. I think it's really great that you are concerned about the future of the book shop and that you go and shop there and support the local shops! Here's a list of books I bought. Not all of them have arrived yet but I thought I'd post a list of what I've ordered over the past weeks, at least. They're new copies when available, but when not available I usually managed to find a cheap second hand copy.Graeme Simsion - The Rosie ProjectJodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer - Between the LinesSophie Kinsella - Wedding NightSophie Divry - The Library of Unrequited LoveSusan Osborne - Bloomsbury Essential Guide for Reading GroupsNik Kalinowski - Bloomsbury Good Reading Guide to World FictionNick Rennison - Bloomsbury Good Reading GuideJen Campbell - Weird Things Customers Say in BookshopsJen Campbell - More Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops This is a great haul! I'm so jealous of the Sophie Divry book! I hope you will like it. The Bloomsbury books are very interesting, I hope. Signor Finzione Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I've been wondering whether I should give this a try or not. You really liked it, and I know others who've also enjoyed it, but I've also heard about what the man himself was like. I definitely won't be buying my own copy, but I might borrow the book from the library and give it a go. If we read a book written by a questionable person, it doesn't mean we condone his personality. I totally agree with this. It's good to try and keep the author separate from the work - I think it would be a shame to deny ourselves a good read just because the author's a [insert word of choice here]. Quote

I think otherwise, for example, Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemingway would soon be forgotten ... And I really happen to like the latter's books! Quote
Athena Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) Note: I had to remove some emoticons. First, before I forget, I loved looking through all the pictures you've posted about your book hauls. And the newly arranged bookcases, and the work in progress. Thanks for posting! Rearranging those shelves must've been so much work... But I see your bookcases aren't jam-packed yet, you could fit in more books...x Thanks ! x A great review, and I'm really happy you liked the book so much! Enzo was amazing, wasn't he? So loving, and so wise... I thought it was great how the book was written from the point of view of a dog. Brilliant stuff!x Thank you ! I'm really glad you recommended the book to me, it was amazing . I love Enzo. x Another great review! Like you, I thought the book was very inspiring. It made me want to read more books (which is odd because I was reading a book, the very same book! at the same time. For some reason I re-read the book just a few years ago and I liked it better on the second reading. Did it make you add books to your wishlist?x I can't quite remember if I added much books to my wishlist. To be honest, I need to go through my wishlist and type it out on the computer and see what should still be on there and what not. But it's tiring work so I haven't done it yet as I've been too tired. x I'm sorry, I'm getting repetitive, but I can't help but say 'another great review!' This is definitely going on my wishlist (if it's not on there already). Sounds like a real pageturner. I can't remember, were you one of those who added The Pact by Picoult on her wishlist after I reviewed the book? If so, have you already found yourself a copy? Sorry, my memory's terrible these days!x I have a copy ! I wanted to read The Storyteller first since it was her newest book and several people on here were reading it and talking about it. I look forward to reading The Pact though! x Oh, and now that I remember: I was happy to see you liked the Veronica Roth books so much. I've seen a lot of people talk about them on here and they've rated the books highly and really enjoyed them. I have to say, I haven't read the reviews or don't even know what the books are about, because I have a feeling they might not be something I would read, but I am happy to see you enjoyed the books!x Thanks ! x I've been wondering whether I should give this a try or not. You really liked it, and I know others who've also enjoyed it, but I've also heard about what the man himself was like. I definitely won't be buying my own copy, but I might borrow the book from the library and give it a go. If we read a book written by a questionable person, it doesn't mean we condone his personality.x Yeah it's a difficult dilemma. I bought the book before I knew much about the author. I still think it's worth reading but I can fully imagine if you feel uncomfortable doing so. It's about seperating the art from the artist x I'm just thrilled that you loved this so much! It was so cleverly written, I loved the thought processes of Don, and the scientific and pedant and academic use of English language. Marvellous! And I can't believe your copy actually included the questionnaire!! That's awesome! I definitely want the same kind of copy at some point (I borrowed the book from the library when I read it)x Thanks ! I hope you find the same copy some time, I thought it was great to see the questionnaire! Edited March 28, 2014 by Athena Quote

And good job finding the Bookshops books Is the Wedding Night by Kinsella as Kinsella or Wickham? x To prevent too many quotes, I'll quote this bit as a whole. The local shop has been saved! I think you would've liked the shop, I did at least. Thanks for your comments @ my hauls ! I plan to read the Sophie Divry book soon, for the next read-a-thon perhaps . I hope the Bloomsbury books are interesting too, so far they look good (I've flicked through them and read a few bits). Wedding Night is written by Sophie Kinsella, that's the name it says on the spine of my copy. It's her newest paperback book and since I love her work I had to order it now that it's out. x I totally agree with this. Athena Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 Tommy Wieringa - Een Mooie Jonge Vrouw Genre: Literature Age-range: Adult Format: Hardback Pages: 94 Synopsis (me / back of the book bits):A story about a man in a relationship with a much younger woman. She means a victory over time, but his aging and decay cannot be stopped. It is a love story about what pain is and whether you can know the pain of another if you have not felt it yourself. My thoughts: This is the Boekenweekgeschenk of 2014. You get it for free if you spend over €12.50 on Dutch books, in the Book week (boekenweek). Both my mum and dad bought a book, and so there was a copy laying around the house that I felt like reading. This was an interesting book. My favourite parts were those where the main character (Edward) remembers parts of his career. He's a virologist, which I find quite interesting. With flashbacks his earlier life is described, and where he met his wife (Ruth, 14-15 years younger than him). I quite liked the writing style of the story. The characters were good and I enjoyed reading about them. The ending was a bit too inconclusive for me, I would've liked the story to be wrapped up a bit more than now. I did really like one particular bit of the ending but I don't want to spoil it. Overall I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the writing style and the characters, I just would've liked the story to have ended differently and more conclusive. Rating: **** (8/10) Quote
Athena Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 I've read 47 books so far this year, which is quite good over almost three months . I might be able to read 150+ books this year. I've read 13693 pages so far, but I've not before recorded my pages so I don't know if it's high or not. It sounds like a lot though. Quote
frankie Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) I've had to butcher some emoticons, too... Thank you! I'm really glad you recommended the book to me, it was amazing. I love Enzo. You are welcome! Always happy to hear someone like a book I've recommended I still remember that Ruth from the forum was the one who got me reading the book, so personally I owe her the honor! I wanted to read The Storyteller first since it was her newest book and several people on here were reading it and talking about it. I look forward to reading The Pact though! Makes sense that you wanted to read TS first. I'm glad you have a copy of TP, and I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it! Although I have a feeling... Even though I've only read one book by Jodi Picoult... That her books are so thought provoking, and as they are about some really serious subject matter, I think I personally wouldn't be able to read too many of her books in a row. I would probably need to read something completely different in between, you know? Thanks ! I hope you find the same copy some time, I thought it was great to see the questionnaire! Was your copy the same as in the image of the book cover you included in the review? The one with the lobster? Hm, wait, I read the same lobster covered book, but the Finnish copy didn't include the questionnaire... Maybe only the English copy does. I hope they'll say which copy has the questionnaire whenever I get to ordering a copy online! I've flicked through it and found some interesting ones . I haven't read the full book though. Were there any that you've already watched? The local shop has been saved! I think you would've liked the shop, I did at least. Oh, I'm very happy that the local shop is safe now! That's fantastic news Wedding Night is written by Sophie Kinsella, that's the name it says on the spine of my copy. It's her newest paperback book and since I love her work I had to order it now that it's out. I'd never heard of the title so that's why I asked if it might be a Wickham novel. But after reading your post, I googled and found out that the book was published in 2013. I didn't know she'd published a new book! I then went to the Sophie Kinsella thread on here and nobody's mentioned Wedding Night in the thread! It's going on my wishlist now Edited March 28, 2014 by frankie Quote

Thanks for the ISBN, I've written it down for future reference! But holy hecks, when I googled the ISBN, and saw the Bookdepo link and then went and checked it, I saw that the book was given only 1/5 stars. And then someone had written a review on it. And it was not a very flattering review! "Anyone who knows someone with Asperger's Syndrome will recognise the impossibility of the story". I thought the whole review was quite harsh! Of course people are entitled to their opinions ... No, though my boyfriend had seen and/or heard of some. I'm sorry to say I haven't seen that many movies (in general). My boyfriend has seen or heard of much more than I have. But I know a lot more about books than he does, so . I googled the title of the book yesterday and found the list and checked out the movie titles. One was I Spit On Your Grave, from 1978. I haven't seen the original, but I've watched the 2010 version and had I known what it was going to be like, I never would've watched it. The movie was well made in itself but the subject matter was just horrid. I strongly recommend that if you have problems with certain types of movies (violence, abuse, horror, etc.), don't go into watching the movies without having checked first what they are about. It's such a mixed list! Some are cult movies in a very 'innocent way', like for example Napoleon Dynamite. That one you can watch and not be horrified. But then there are others that will just mess with your mind if you are at all sensitive. Sorry, I hope I haven't put you off the list now! There are some great movies in the list, and of course I've only seen embarrassinbly few of them myself! Quote
Signor Finzione Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 47!? Seriously, 47 books is amazing. I doubt I'll have managed that even by the end of the year! And thanks for teaching me a new word! Everyone is different and while the character is perhaps not the most common view of someone with Asperger's, I certainly think he could exist. Not all people with autism are the same. Yes, they share some common problems but they're all different people with different personalities. Thanks for telling me about the movies. I've read some, started others but haven't finished the series (ie. I've read a lot of Discworld books but not the whole series yet) and even more others I have on the TBR. I have a lot more on the TBR than I've read . I'd better get on it and finish series and read more fantasy books! I'm currently reading the third book in the Demon Cycle series by Peter V. Brett, The Daylight War. I do love reading fantasy books. I've received two books I preordered: Terry Pratchett, Ian Steward and Jack Cohen - The Science of Discworld IV: Judgement Day Robin Hobb - The Rain Wild Chronicles 4: Blood of Dragons Quote

Athena Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Wow, that's quite a collection! Which have been your favourites? x Hmmm, that's a difficult question . Overall I'd say definitely these: The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic simply because they were the first Discworld books I read and therefore introduced me to Pratchett's work. I was blown away by how funny and wonderful these books were. I finished reading The Colour of Magic on the train and went into the first book shop I saw to buy The Light Fantastic. I also love Mort, The Hogfather, Guards! Guards, hmm.. I rated all of them 10/10 so . I'd have to read all the synopsis's because I don't remember all of them . To be honest I liked most of them a whole lot. I love the characters of Rincewind, Death, the witches, the Watch characters.. I should really just read the next book in the series, I haven't read any last year. Which ones were your favourites? x I seem to remember enjoying it, but read it while on holiday so didn't quite get into it as much as I wanted to - being next to a swimming pool with loads of noisy children splashing and screaming isn't the best environment for reading! .x Yeah I can imagine that . Maybe in a while you can re-read it in a quieter time? I'm really enjoying reading book three so far, I'm not that far in yet but it's a very good story. When I started reading them I didn't know about the various groupings so I just started to read them in publication order as I bought them. I haven't read Going Postal, The Truth and Night Watch yet, their synopsis's seem very interesting . x I remember loving the magic too, the Wards and the demons in the first book were a lot of fun. I do hope to read all three of them at some point this/next year, though am not sure whether to wait until the new one has been released . . .x I hope you read all three at some point . The series is intended as a quintet though so the story won't finish there. I looked it up but there doesn't seem to be a date yet for the fourth book. I've read a few more chapters in book three and am really enjoying it. At the beginning I was worried I had forgot a lot, but as I read more, some things are briefly explained, as well as that I remembered what happened in the previous two books. Quote
Timstar Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Ooh, another one to add to your 'Robin Hobb: Unread' shelf? I must say I'm always tempted to buy Robin Hobb's books - they're so shiny! They look great don't they! I have managed to resist buying any paperbacks so far but the new editions look like they might be too hard to resist... Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 ^^ That's much better than the previous cover style. Quote

Good to know you didn't get lost in book #3! I think he keeps posting chapters from the fourth book on his website, but obviously I haven't gone anywhere near it for fear of spoilers. Karsa Orlong Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Couldn't keep GRRM's name off it, though, could they? Quote
