Oblomov Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I have heard that Relentless by Simon Kernick is something special even among thrillers. Can anyone comment on this book before I buy it? Quote
wrathofkublakhan Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Oblomov, I think you stumped the panel! Quote
Louiseog Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I haven't read it but it is on the Richard and Judy list so not sure what that says about it? Quote
Janet Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 On another website I occasionally visit it got a very positive response. Quote
Oblomov Posted July 9, 2007 Author Posted July 9, 2007 OK, I have decided to give it a try. I ordered the book today. Quote
~Andrea~ Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 They were raving about it on Richard and Judy today. It does sound good, a pacy thriller, easy to read and gripping as opposed to meaty literature from what I gather but I had to switch over, they were telling me too much!! I like to find out what happens by reading!! Quote
Nici Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I saw it on Richard and Judy earlier as well. It certainly sounds like my type of book! Quote
Oblomov Posted July 12, 2007 Author Posted July 12, 2007 The book arrived today. Will start reading it soon. Quote
nicx27 Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I found it a bit far-fetched, but as thrillers go it was an ok read. Not sure that it's something special though, although the story strays a bit from the norm, so that's a good thing. I'll look forward to hearing what you think of it. Quote
Oblomov Posted July 16, 2007 Author Posted July 16, 2007 I completed the book last night and confess that I was a bit disappointed. A bit overpaced and far-fetched with too many possibilities for "why not?" speculation. Also, too many twists towards the end and so it eventually ran out of credibility. Quote
aromaannie Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 I loved this and read in 2 days. I found it dead exciting and have now put his previous books on my wish list on Amazon. Quote
Ruth Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 It's on my tbr. I'm looking for a good book to take on honeymoon, to read during the flight. This is a serious contender! Quote
Oblomov Posted July 25, 2007 Author Posted July 25, 2007 It's on my tbr. I'm looking for a good book to take on honeymoon, to read during the flight. This is a serious contender! One suggestion. Don't let your spouse read it on your honeymoon! Quote
Ruth Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Oooh that's got me thinking - I don't know if I dare ask why he shouldn't read it!! I'll make sure he stays away from it though! Quote

Mark Van Spall Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I loved it. It did have some parts that weren't great, but don't all books? On the whole, since reading Relentless (and then Severed) I have gone through the entire back catalogue of Simon Kernick's books, and am rapidly becoming a fan. His books have pace, suspense, twists and are well researched. I also like the fact that characters from earlier books crop up in the newer ones. They're not in a series per se, but I feel it adds to the realism. Quote
LG1976 Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Has anyone read any of his books? I picked up 'Deadline' by accident in the library last week. Have never heard of the author before but the blurb on the cover sounded like a good plot so I thought i would give it a go. Nearly 3/4's of the way through and I'm really enjoying it. It's one of them books that I don't want to put down. Just wondered if anyone else has read anything by him and what they think. Quote
Michelle Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Was it Relentless, as there's a discussion about it here? Quote
LG1976 Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Thanks Michelle. It wasn't till after I posted that I googled him and saw that he was a R&J Summer Read! Good to see ppl have enjoyed his other books too! I will defo be looking out for more of his stuff in the future. Quote

I decided to merge both threads anyway, under just his name. Quote
baggiesfan Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I have read three of his now, i like his books but the writing style isnt my favourite. Quote
Heather Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 I have read Severed and bought Relentless last week he is another new author for me. Quote
BrainFreeze Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I completed the book last night and confess that I was a bit disappointed. A bit overpaced and far-fetched with too many possibilities for "why not?" speculation. Also, too many twists towards the end and so it eventually ran out of credibility. This is pretty much my overall impression of Simon Kernick. To me, it always seems like he's over-trying and to be honest, I'm not a fan of his style of writing. That said, I've read 3 of his books so far and they were ok - personally though, to be a fan of someone, I need to think their books are more than 'ok'. I will read more of his though. Quote
