Here is another quote from the book,

"'Of course I hope that,' Bird said 'No One in his right mind wants a battle.'

'Nate dose' Adam said teasingly.

'I said "in his right mind,"' Bird pounced. 'I am careful to be precise with my words, perhaps because I never went to Yale. Do you really want to see battle ********?'

******** half smiled. 'I want to see the elephant.'"

I hope that helps jog some memories :)

Well, I don't read much historical fiction, but I've just had a look under your avatar and seen you're reading a Bernard Cornwell book, and I know he writes historical fiction, so I'm going to guess it's one of his?

It is in fact the first book in the series : Rebel by Bernard Cornwell :) I have just finished reading it and it was a great book.

Your turn!

Wow, another lucky guess! :D

I'm not sure if this one is really obvious to some, but it's a favourite of mine, so I'm going to try it anyway ...

"He is as fine a fellow," said XXXXX, as soon as they were out of the house, "as ever I saw. He simpers, and smirks, and makes love to us all. I am prodigiously proud of him. I defy even YYYYY himself to produce a more valuable son-in-law."

Okay:

I am reading Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. His main character is called Humbert Humbert, which shows a lack of imagination on Nabokov's part. Surely he could have thought up a different surname.

Going by the quote, I would think he was still quite young, so is it The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole? (and if it is :) .. thanks Claire :D and if it isn't  :blush2:)

Okay I'm going to give you guys a clue: the name of a music video Christopher Walken has danced in is a clue to the title of the book :)

Cool!  (Although I cheated really and should have let someone who worked out it was Adrian Mole get it.   ).

I'm off to choir now - I will leave this window open and post something on my return if that's okay.  :)

I think once somebody else figured out the author but got the title wrong, and I simply barged in and tried another title, and got it right... Don't mean to sound tyrannical and mean, but if we waited around til the person who got the author right guessed the book right as well, it might get a bit boring for the rest... And I don't think anyone really minds :):friends3:

Thanks, frankie.  :)

Here's mine - I don't think this one will be around long...

"Now that she was alone, she had time to think, and one of the things she thought of most was what mother had said in one of those feverish nights when her hands were so hot and her eyes so bright."
