timetosplit Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 When I was in school, I loved reading Goosebumps and the Darren Shan books, but now that I'm 22 years old, I need to find something new to read. I've tried, but I get so bored by all the details, imagery, description, etc. that bog down the action. Not to offend anyone, I actually graduated with a bachelors in English, but somehow I haven't read a book for fun in years. What I loved about the Darren Shan books and Goosebumps was that it was straightforward. It was like a movie, everything progressed quickly and the writer did not have to force every detail into your brain. I believe that with little description, the author trusts the reader to use their imagination to fill in the rest. So, which books should I be reading? What books can you reccommend? What other books are like Goosebumps or Darren Shan's Works? What YA books are good for...an adult? Quote
Vimes Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 (edited) Hi timetosplit, the only books that I can think of the might be close to what you are looking for are the Nine Wild series by Andy McDermott. They read like action movies and are a bit Tomb Raider-ish in the fact that they have legends and myths that turn out to be real in them. I loved them they were fast paced and just fun wit h not too much on the detail front. Edited September 22, 2013 by Vimes Quote
timetosplit Posted September 22, 2013 Author Posted September 22, 2013 Thanks for the advice, I'll head to the library today and see if they have a copy. If not, I'll just browse the YA section and see what comes up. Quote

At times it can be nice, but often I find myself just wanting to skip over all that crap! I would recommend books by Roald Dahl (as always!), James Thurber, Carl Hiaasen, Fight Club, Hank the Cowdog series, Candide by Voltaire, and short books by David Haynes (such as Ballet of Bones). Athena Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I'd recommend other horror books by R. L. Stine (that aren't Goosebumps), such as the Fear Street series or the Point Horror series (also has books written by other authors, that I liked). I loved these when I was a child and teenager (I also liked Goosebumps). I don't really know what else. Quote
TinSoldier Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Christopher Pike might be worth a look. Quote
dex Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 You could try some Tom Clancy's Netforce Explorers, Whilst being Sci-f/i crime, they do have action in them. They are based around teenagers helping police the internet. Quote
