So I've got to part 2, chapter 29 and Vera has now appeared, but I haven't read much more. I've only managed another 54 pages to get me to the end of chapter 35.

I've finished the Book of Lost Things and I love it. I like the use of old fairy tail material and it's a very moving story.

I was just slightly annoyed that nearly a third of the book is not part of the story but explanation and origin of several fairy tails.

I'm done with writing down my wishlist in a notebook :)! Next step is to type it in a document, so I can copy paste it into my reading log of 2014 when it's time to post our logs. Next notebook will be my reading list, and the third will be a list of all the books I own. I haven't yet decided how exactly I'll write these two, I think I'll add ratings for the reading lists, and of course the dates, author and title (and series title). For the books I own, I could add an ISBN but this would take me a while to look up..

I'm currently reading Some Kind Of Fairytale by Graham Joyce [not bad at all] Are We nearly There Yet? by Ben Hatch [ I want to smack the parents not the children] Mrs Robinson's Disgrace by Kate Summerscale [riveting] and 69 For One by Alan Coren [short pieces, and all very funny.]I delve into these books depending on the mood I'm in.

Wow, that's a lot of books to be reading at one time! I don't think my brain could easily handle reading four different books at once.

I'm still reading Bridget Jones's Diary but it won't be that long anymore until I have it finished, about 60 pages left. On the Kindle I'm reading Organizing for Dummies, but I tend to read more in my paperbook than on my Kindle, when it's light enough.

Got past the sixty pages (The Sound and the Fury) ... was waiting for the fog to clear but it hasn't really. Flicked forward a bit and saw that it does start making sense later down the line .. can I be bothered to make it that far?? I don't know .. it seems almost cruel to mojo to be reading a complicated book. But .. it's on the 1001 and is a classic and all .. I'll plod on for a bit further but those nice new shiny books are beckoning :D

I'm reading "Up in the Old Hotel" by Joseph Mitchell. Mitchell was a journalist who joined the "New Yorker" in 1938, and this is a collection of the pieces that appeared in the magazine. The final piece here was published in September 1964, and bizarrely, Mitchell went into the office almost every day for the next 31 years but didn't submit another piece for publication.

Mitchell specialised in writing about outsiders - the people who wandered the city's streets, lived in the waterfront flophouses, haunted the dives and all-night restaurants. It's an excellent book, packed with vivid description and engrossing anecdotes, and, although many of the characters Mitchell describes are living on the very outermost fringes of society, his warmth and lack of condescension shine through.

Sounds very interesting, Roland. I think I'll add this to my wish list. :)

I'm still reading Inkheart. For the next couple of days, my book activity will mostly be related to organising my book lists for the book fair I'm going to on Friday.

I wish you lots of fun, Kylie :)!

I just finished reading Bridget Jones's Diary and am now thinking about what to read next. Think I'll wait a little while before deciding it for sure (meanwhile still have a non-fiction book on the Kindle that I was reading).

I haven't bought that one yet but I'm really liking the first one so I might have to get it sometime soon.

Personally I think it's just as good as the first book, and maybe even better. I would recommend you get a copy soon :) And I think Fielding is writing/has already written a third novel in the series...?

Have still not got to the end of the 60 page nightmare start to The Sound and the Fury .. I seem to be taking three days to read three pages :o  :giggle: Actually it seems to be getting further away .. it can't do that can it?

Sonomabitch :o

Well you've got loads of time, you're well in advance :D But preparing for it now will make the setting up of the new reading log a lot easier  It'll be interesting to see what you are going to do with it. It always fun reading through other people's first pages in New Year :)

I'm glad you're enjoying Mrs Robinson's Disgrace. I read another book by Summerscale last year, I think and really disliked it, but I'm very curious about this book, and might give it a go. I hope you post your thoughts on the book in the Summerscale thread when you've finished!

That's so annoying, having so many nicer books waiting for your attention, but knowing this is on a list... Who whould've thunk Faulkner would do this to you :censored:  Evil man.

I'm still reading The Joy Luck Club (I had to start from the beginning because I'm having a hard time remembering who's who and what happened to whom ) and taking notes. But I don't like taking notes in bed so I started another book for bedtime reading: Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. I wasn't expecting to like it, but I do :o

Edit: Wohoo, I just found out that Cannery Row is on the 1001 list :D I knew this before, because I made some notes when writing the book down on the lists on my reading log, but I'd completely forgotten. And to think I almost gave this book away a few weeks ago because I didn't feel like reading it... I should've remembered I loved Steinbeck's Wayward Bus. Oh, and Of Mice and Men! Sonomabitch, I like Steinbeck :o I always thought he was okay, but mentioned so many times that I grew tired of hearing his name... But now I have to admit that I like his books.

Hehe ... he is evil isn't he :D On the bright side .. subsequent books will be perfect and a pleasure to read in comparison .. I hope :D I'm glad you're getting on well with Steinbeck .. a much better choice from the 1001 methinks

As long as you don't decide to re-read MB or sumfink.... :giggle2: Jokes aside: I can't remember, is this your first Faulkner? I'm a bit worried now that you're having problems with him. Because someone on here wrote a great review on As I Lay Dying and I've been wanting to read it ever since...

I hope :D Nothing wrong with it otherwise, I'm very much enjoying the stories. I think it's just difficult because the stories are just stories, they are not woven into the the present. They are separate from the framework. But I think I will become more used to it.

As far as I know .. hell hasn't frozen over :D

It is my first Faulkner and may well be my last :giggle2: .. no .. seriously .. I don't think this is particularly indicative of his style. I hope not anyway :D

It is difficult .. and linking the pairs is difficult so it's a difficult book to pick up and lay down (so many difficults in one sentence  :giggle:) I found the girls stories easier than the mum's but the mum's stories were often more entertaining. Hope it's not giving you knots in your head :friends0:

Oh I hope so, too... I somehow have this feeling that AILD ought to be easier..

Yes I think linking the pairs might become difficult, that's why I'm now happy that I have the family tree page in my copy... :D I'm really enjoying the mums' stories.. Such a different culture, such a different time. And don't worry, I am enjoying the book. I should probably dedicate more time to it per day, though! Ought not to watch celeb BB instead... :giggle:

I'm glad to hear you really liked the second one, I might buy it soon :)! (but not yet.. I'm going to try and not buy too many books in the next month since it's my birthday next month. If I really feel like it or see a good deal though..) As far as I know, a third novel has been announced but not published yet.

I'm going to try and make it better than this year. Hopefully I'll think it through and leave enough posts beforehand! I only joined the forum somewhere in January so it'll be a different experience the next New Year, knowing everyone etc. It'll hopefully be fun reading through all the new logs :).

((EDIT: I'm quite enjoying having a lot of time, or more importantly, I'm enjoying having a bit more energy. I have more time in the day than I have energy for. I agreed with myself to do the wishlist writing in part of the morning, then have the afternoon off for some reading. This because a few days ago I did not much else during the day except the writing and my hand hurt badly (also because the writing all the different things is more tiring than reading a relaxing book so I was quite tired from it.))

This makes sense! When I was doing the last read-a-thon or just writing reviews of a short collection in a book, I also found it awkward to take notes in bed. I'm glad to hear you're liking the book so far :).

I've read up to page 316 which is the end of chapter 39 of The Crow Trap now. People are trying to find things out off their own bat, and Vera is sitting back drip feeding them with information, and watching what they do.

I'm pretty sure I've got this on my TBR.  I picked it up because I'd seen it recommended on here somewhere.

I started reading Damsel in Distress by Carola Dunn (the fifth Daisy Dalrymple book) and am listening to Mansfield Park by Jane Austen, read by Juliet Stevenson.

Oh, and I bought Austenland by Shannon Hale in the Kindle Daily Deal. :smile2:

I've got to page 436 Chapter 55 and am about 100 pages from the end of the story, although there is a preview of the next book so this accounts for the different page counts. ;) I've now got to 477 and will finish tomorrow.

I really need to update my reading thread, but until then....I have just completed a re read of Angie Sage's 'Septimus Heap' series. The last book in the series 'Fyre' came out this year and I wanted to thoroughly immerse myself into the fantastic and compelling world that Angie Sage created with the books.
