chaliepud Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 Unbelievable, I finally have 10 minutes to update my books read in my first post on this thread and it's gone all funny again. I don't understand what's wrong with it, I've not tried to do anything clever... grrrrrr.. Quote
chesilbeach Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 (edited) The coding for all the formatting is HTML code not BB code. Are you trying to copy it into another app and then edit it and copy back? Edited August 24, 2013 by chesilbeach Quote
chaliepud Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 No not at all, I was just editing using the things on here... I can't remember doing anything different at any time. Quote
chesilbeach Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 (edited) Not sure what's caused it then I can copy it and get it back to more or less plain text (the only thing I can't do is the colour) and paste it in this post if you want? You can then try copying it and editing it again to see if you can get it back to normal. Edited August 24, 2013 by chesilbeach Quote
chaliepud Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 No don't worry if there's a chance it'll happen next time, I have it all on Goodreads so I'll just type it out again, not that many there so won't take too long! I must have done something wrong at some point. Thanks though. Quote
frankie Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I'm so sorry I've missed so much on here before! I haven't been very diligent on coming here lately, and usually I have to go a lot of new posts in various different threads... I was sure one time when I was doing this that there were new posts in your log, but when I clicked 'view new content' it said no more new posts. Which sometimes happens, the system somehow 'decides' that since you only have three or five more threads to go through, we will not show them to you and we'll just lazily say 'you've run out'. It's happened before, but not in a really long time so I guess I just thought maybe there weren't any more for me to go through I'm so annoyed that I've missed the wolf walk pics! What amazing animals! I know you must've been super excited... And you got so really close to them, too! I guess they were in a really good mood... Good for you! No, we are in a regular detached house in a village, we have a country park only a 5 minute walk away though where the dogs can run off lead, there are plenty of other walks around too but all require a car journey of varying lengths. Sorry, it's just a cultural or maybe a dictionary thing, but is a detached house the kind where you have two stores and share one wall with a neighbor, who has the same kind of two store -house like you, but mirrored to yours? Anyhow, that's not important! What I really wanted to ask was is the park the one where there's the really big rock where you take all those great doggy family pics?? Obi was diagnosed with ED at 4 months old and operates on at 5 months, the recovery was slow but he's nearly 10 now asks doing brilliantly, long may it last! Obi's so awesome. He's one of my favorite dogs I know of Give him a big cuddle! I've so much enjoyed all the pics and vids on FB of Jojo... I'm so happy that you keep posting them!! I really like the ones where she's with Obi... They make a great duo! How's Dylan doing? I wish I could visit and just stay in while Obi and Jojo went in the garden to play, so I could give him a nice relaxing cuddle and just sit on the couch and let him doze off Quote

A detached house can be any size and number of floors but is a dwelling that is not attached to any other, a semi-detached is attached to just one other and a terraced would be a row of houses joined together. Yes, the country park is a large area of heathland with one hill, the rock is at the top of the hill, that's why we won't be getting any more pics of Dylan atop the rock anymore. Obi is most definitely awesome, but he is very much a marmite dog, some people just don't understand him. He is wary of people but so many people don't accept this and wonder why he ends up grumbling at them.. I need to take some more pics of little (but growing fast) Jojo, we'll have had her 5 weeks tomorrow, maybe I should take some anniversary photographs. Dylan would love some cuddles but don't worry I always make sure he has some cuddle time every day. I can't believe my big bear is 15 now, his back legs are not so strong any more but he still enjoys a nice half hour walk and loves his food so hopefully he has some good months in him yet! Quote
chaliepud Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 I've just updated by TBR list and have only 47 left to read despite a few recent purchases, there are a few there that I don't think I'll ever read but I just might so they can stay there for now. Annoyingly my mojo is high at present but my time is severely limited. Puppy is taking a lot of my time and isn't the best sleeper so I am having to get to bed when she does so I can get a reasonable nights sleep, and that was when I used to do most of my reading. I have bought a few books this last week or so... 11:22:63 - Stephen King A Dog's Journey - W.Bruce Cameron The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul - Deborah Rodriguez Also, I have bought three Cookery books... The Hairy Dieters Eat for Life (I loved their first healthy eating book and this one looks just as good if not better) A Passion for Baking by Jo Wheatley (Chesil's recommendation) Save with Jamie by Jamie Oliver I just need to get organised and get some ingredients in now! Quote
poppyshake Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I've had my eye on all three of those cookery books .. though haven't got The Hairy Bikers original diet book so doubt I would get this before that (have heard excellent things about it though). I'm hoping (and hinting ) at my mum to get me Jo Wheatley's book for Christmas. I follow Jo's blog now and she just makes scrummy stuff all the time. I like Jamie so will be interested in seeing what you make of this new book and whether it really does help you save money etc. Is there a programme? .. I keep meaning to look but am hopeless at remembering these things. I know a lot of people are sceptical about him (some of the Amazon reviews are quite vicious) but I think he has a genuine love of food and a genuine wish for us all to eat healthier and tastier food etc. Also as you know, I recently got the The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul too so let's hope, for both our sakes that it's good. Aww, the puppy won't be a puppy for long .. enjoy her while you can and then you can fill your boots with reading Quote
pontalba Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Puppies are great, but it is also a great relief when they grow up a bit! Especially getting over the teething (on my hands, wrists and arms) stage. heh Actually I haven't had a puppy in 30 years or so. The last two dogs I had were already grown when I inherited them. Great dogs, too. I've been dreaming about dogs lately. But with the 6 cats, and one particularly militant cat, I won't be getting any dogs. I don't know if that's good or bad. Quote
Athena Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 It must be difficult, having to spend so much time with your puppy. When Boris was younger I found it to be quite difficult, personally. I'm glad you're having fun too, though. 11/22/63 and A Dog's Journey are on my TBR, I look forward to hear what you think of them (when you get around to reading them)! I just ordered Save with Jamie myself! (will post about it when I have it etc). I'm interested in the other two cookbooks you mentioned too, what was the first Hairy Dieters book like? I've not heard much of them, but the second book seems to be in the bestselling charts. Quote
julie Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Chalie Glad you mojo is good ..as the others said .the pup will probably learn all the rules soon and not need quite as much round the clock supervision ,then you can read a lot more . That's great that you have your TBR pile knocked down to a double digit number . I tend to buy so much more than I read , which tends to build up on you after awhile. The more books waiting ,the more pressure to get them read .. A vicious cycle . We'd like to see some updated photos if you get the chance . Quote

I did try explaining that I was only bathing her as she rolled in fox wee but I don't think she agreed that she smelt unpleasant! The Hairy Bikers books are brilliant, lots of great recipes that in generally don't require masses of expensive or difficult to find ingredients, most of them can be made from what you would have in a reasonably maintained store cupboard/fridge/freezer. There is a new Jamie TV programme, I think it is on Monday evenings on C4. I quite like him although I sometimes find his enthusiasm a little tiring, he can't be like that all the time, surely? Quote

Puppies are a bit like kids, you quickly forget how hard they are so you have another!! She is getting a little easier day by day and is such fun to train and play with even if it means little else gets done! I'm not sure if I could have a house without a dog, maybe I'll try it one day, probably when the kids have left home (do they ever?) and we want to travel and not be restricted so much. We have just the one cat and they are much easier! Quote

The first Hairy Dieters was very popular too, they are full of nice straightforward recipes, nothing too fancy and all that would fill you up, lots of good traditional foods too. Save with Jamie looks good so far, again, lots of practical recipes, although I normally end up ignoring half the book as I choose not to eat any meats other than chicken and fish. Quote

vodkafan Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Only 47 Chaliepud! That's great going. If you teach the puppy to read then I will be really impressed Quote
chaliepud Posted September 15, 2013 Author Posted September 15, 2013 Only 47 Chaliepud! That's great going. If you teach the puppy to read then I will be really impressed Hmmm, I wonder what genre she'd like.. horror probably!! Quote
chaliepud Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Two more books added to the TBR shelf after recommendations on here.. Fractured - Teri Terry Dream Science - Thomas Palmer Plus one on its way from Michelle from this weeks competition.. The Invention of Wings - Sue Monk Kidd That takes me up to 50, so will draw the line there, I've started reading one of them so should be able to keep it below 50, for me that is the perfect number of books as it gives me choice when I want to start a new book but it won't overwhelm me. Quote
julie Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Chalie I need to try reaching your goal of only 50 books on hand at a time. I'm like you, if I have a huge number of books waiting, it bothers me ... I think I'm among the minority, though ,as most everyone in here likes the biggest pile of books they can possibly accumulate. I like having lots to choose from, but I also tend to go overboard and buy way faster than I read ,so they pile up quickly in my Kindle . Quote
chaliepud Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 It is so easy to do Julie. My life is so busy at the moment and I am reading a lot less so It makes sense to slow down a little.. Christmas is approaching after all and I normally get a few books as presents! Good luck with your reading, looks like it has picked up again with the YA books you've been reading? Quote
julie Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Chalie Yes, oddly ,these YA books are so much fun . Something totally new and different. I like reading about being back in school and such.. It was such a fun time for me. I keep telling my grandson I wish there was a Time Machine and I could go back and do school all over again, but he always informs me that if I went back I'd be the same AGE I am now, and would be too old for school. He also informed me that if I COULD go back as a kid, that if I changed even ONE LITTLE DECISION in my past, HE wouldn't be here now . Apparently the moons have to line up; properly or everything might be different today if I had changed one tiny little thing. I always tell him I wouldn't trade him for all the money in the world, so I'll just stay old, and be the best Grandma on the planet . Quote
poppyshake Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Christmas is approaching after all Oh dear it is isn't it? .. .. can't we have a year off chalie? we'd be able to buy loads of books with the money we've saved Quote
chaliepud Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 (edited) Oh dear, there appears to be a correlation between reading less and buying more! I was doing well I thought but I seem to have added to the TBR rather which at a rough count is now up to the mid 50's. Ohwell, I don't have any vices so who cares! Here are my new additions - Stephen King - The Stand and Needful Things John Steinbeck - Cannery Row, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, The Pearl and The Red Pony (a very reasonably priced set from The book People) Pushing The Limits - Katie McGarry The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriarty Girl, Stolen - April Henry (for Decembers RNIB reading circle) A Dog Named Christmas - Greg Kincaid (Thank you frankie! ) Lost and Found - Jacqueline Sheehan (Thanks again frankie! ) Daring To Dream - Nora Roberts Marina - Carlos Ruiz Zafon I think I will barely break even on my Goodreads challenge this years which is a little disappointing as I was 8 books ahead at one point, but I have in fact already this year read the same amount of pages that I read in the whole of 2012 so not so bad when I look at it that way. Jojo is sleeping better now in that she sleeps in till 630 every morning now so I need to get back in the habit of reading in bed, which means earlier nights, not sitting on the sofa catching up with my favourite TV shows after my eldest finally goes to bed! Edited November 15, 2013 by chaliepud Quote
julie Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Chalie Yep, you sound like me. Even if I'm in a major reading slump, I purchase books. I honestly think I buy more during those times to make up for the lack of reading . I feel like I'm still "in the Book world" if I buy books, even though I don't read them. It sounds as though you chose a lot of good ones, so you'll be glad you got them . Consider it an early Christmas gift : To You From You . Quote
