Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 I've read [ . . . ] Conspirita... I read that one (it's called Lustrum over here) without knowing it was a sequel, and still loved it. I've got Imperium but haven't read it yet - like you, I was waiting for the final book and then was planning to read all three of them How did you like Fatherland? It's very good. Quite a scary alternate history, I thought. Quote
pontalba Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Ahhh, didn't realize it was an alternate history story, or if I did, I'd forgotten. BTW, just read yesterday about C.J. Sansom's newest book coming out...it's an alternate history as well. It's called Dominion. Here is Sansom's website, http://www.cjsansombooks.com/ There is a link to read the first two chapters on his page. Quote

Just as well it's an alternate history, or I'd have to point out to him that a tube train leaving Kenton station would not be on its way to Victoria Quote

UnderTheDome40 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Happy reading in 2013 Karsa. I'm thinking about making one of these for myself after seeing yours, you've made your lists so organized. I definitely definitely want to try out "The Unforgiven" by Patricia Macdonald next, it looks so good, although not many people gave it reviews but the ones that did loved it. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Oh my lists aren't half as organised as other people on here Amazon have offered me a refund for The Sunne in Splendour, so I'm going to take that and re-purchase it when the new edition comes out next week Quote
Little Pixie Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Great review, glad you enjoyed it. I agree it was a bit speedy! See. I really liked Pompeii ; I enjoyed the historical stuff and the feeling that I was learning without being lectured to. Ooh, Dominion`s one of the mighty tomes I`m thinking of geting around to reading - or at least bump further up the TBR list. Quote
Little Pixie Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 BTW, I see a new Kindle is coming out - click - so I`m glad I`ve managed to wait. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 I really liked Pompeii ; I enjoyed the historical stuff and the feeling that I was learning without being lectured to. Good to know! I am going to read it now, as the book I wanted to read is causing problems! Ooh, Dominion`s one of the mighty tomes I`m thinking of geting around to reading - or at least bump further up the TBR list. 656 pages? That's not a mighty tome, it's just about average Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 BTW, I see a new Kindle is coming out - click - so I`m glad I`ve managed to wait. Oooh, nice I might even be tempted to upgrade this time, though I shall wait for reviews Quote

That's not a mighty tome, it's just about average Meh, anything over 300 pages is extravagant. Glad to see that Amazon are solving the book thingy problem for you. Going off topic, I just ordered the BR box set of Battlestar Galactica on Amazon - just under £38 for 20 discs. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Meh, anything over 300 pages is extravagant. Wimp Glad to see that Amazon are solving the book thingy problem for you. Yeah! Well, I hope they are. Anyway, I've now decided to order a secondhand copy of the old paperback. This has been confusing me all day, but it's done now! Going off topic, I just ordered the BR box set of Battlestar Galactica on Amazon - just under £38 for 20 discs. Bargain! Quote
Little Pixie Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Wimp Moi ? I might have to make yet another resolution and have a Big Book Read once I`ve reached this year`s 100. Yeah! Well, I hope they are. Anyway, I've now decided to order a secondhand copy of the old paperback. This has been confusing me all day, but it's done now! `Tis annoying when you`re forced to stop reading ; I once had pagination isues with an Agatha Christie from Waterstone`s and they had to order me a new one - I got to the final few pages and instead of a thrilling denouement, the book repeated previous pages. Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Moi ? I might have to make yet another resolution and have a Big Book Read once I`ve reached this year`s 100. Will that bring your TBR pile below 700? `Tis annoying when you`re forced to stop reading ; I once had pagination isues with an Agatha Christie from Waterstone`s and they had to order me a new one - I got to the final few pages and instead of a thrilling denouement, the book repeated previous pages. Crikey, Can't say I've ever had problems with a treebook Got an email from Amazon confirming the refund and asking me to delete the book from my Kindle. I suppose, if I were cheap, I could read the book before deleting it But no, I've ordered the paperback Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 BTW, I see a new Kindle is coming out - click - so I`m glad I`ve managed to wait. And it's now available to pre-order Quote

Little Pixie Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Will that bring your TBR pile below 700? Barring accidentally ordering more books, I hope to get down to around 680 by the end of the year. Got an email from Amazon confirming the refund and asking me to delete the book from my Kindle. I suppose, if I were cheap, I could read the book before deleting it But no, I've ordered the paperback Hurray ! Quote
Little Pixie Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 And it's now available to pre-order Thanks. I`ll wait till just before Xmas, in the hope that they`ll suddenly knock off £20 oslt. It`s not like I`m going to run out of books in the meantime... Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 Looks like my TBR list is set to hang around the 60 mark forever A visit to Waterstone's on the way home and two new books have been added to it: Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence - had my eye on this trilogy for a while. The buzz about it on the Malazan forums has been spectacular, so it had better be good! The Fortune of War by Patrick O'Brien - they had it, it's in perfect condition, so I bought it Quote
Timstar Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence - had my eye on this trilogy for a while. The buzz about it on the Malazan forums has been spectacular, so it had better be good! I've heard good things about this recently as well, I had previously dismissed it as another Game of Thrones rip-off. Looking forward to seeing what you think Quote
poppyshake Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence - The buzz about it on the Malazan forums has been spectacular Ooh .. one for me then? 60 TBR's is pretty good isn't it? With the aid of Kendal Mint Cake it's quite conquerable Quote
Janet Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Please let me know what they say, I'd really like to know! So a modern SF stand-alone thriller-ish type book that's full of action and preferably not too long (I'm guessing the last one)? Blimey Well a few spring to mind. The first two are most likely to appeal, I reckon - especially The Breach, if he likes Lee Child-type thrillers. Although most of them are in a 'series' they are stand-alone stories (it's only the characters that carry over from book to book), so I reckon I can get away with those A couple of these are the first books in trilogies, though, including The Breach. The Breach by Patrick Lee (first in his 'Breach Trilogy') - 384 pages Mindstar Rising by Peter F. Hamilton (stand-alone story, the first of his 'Greg Mandel' books) - 448 pages Prador Moon by Neal Asher (stand-alone story set in his 'Polity' universe) - 256 pages Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis (first in his 'Milkweed Tryptich') - 432 pages The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers - 464 pages Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds (stand-alone story set in his 'Revelation Space' universe) - 640 pages You could also have a look at Iain M. Banks (The Player of Games or Use of Weapons, perhaps - although my favourite is Feersum Endjinn). Hope that helps Brilliant - thanks so much for the suggestions - I will pass them on to him. Quote
