This is the 24th John Rebus book and it's a good one. The plot is convoluted and I found some of the unfamiliar characters difficult to follow but all in all it's a great romp around the now legendary Rebus. My other favourite character makes an appearance but I can't tell you what happens to him or it'll spoil the plot. Rebus is in the dock. My father is now enjoying it and it's the first Rebus that he's read. Recommended. -
This is the prequel to the Laidlaw Series that McIlvanney wrote. He was part of the way through it when he died and Ian Rankin was asked to finish it. Poor man's Rebus, imho. Set in 1970s Glasgow (both of which I know well) DC Laidlaw is investigating a murder. He's married with children but stays in a hotel when working on a case. This particular case is supposed to be gang related/organised crime but comes off as neither. The other characters are neither here nor there either. I enjoyed it enough to finish it - I never finish a book I don't enjoy - and it was an easy and not overly long read. I could also tell where McIlvanney ended and Rankin began

From Amazon : The second book in the Malcom Fox Series, Malcolm Fox and his team are back, investigating whether fellow cops covered up for Detective Paul Carter. Carter has been found guilty of misconduct, but what should be a simple job is soon complicated by a brutal murder and a weapon that should not even exist. A trail of revelations leads Fox back to 1985, a year of desperate unrest when letter-bombs and poisonous spores were sent to government offices, and kidnappings and murders were plotted. But while the body count rises the clock starts ticking, and a dramatic turn of events sees Fox in mortal danger. Recommended.
