  1. You know what?! It's so hard to choose the best stories among the books I've read so far because there was something good in every single one I've read in this 2013. After a lot of thinking, I made up my mind:

    Corrag - Susan Fletcher 5/5

The Snow Child - Eowyn Ivey 5/5

    A Greyhound of a Girl - Roddy Doyle 5/5

And a Oriana Fallaci book, not translated in english yet. Another 5/5

    Then I also enjoyed

The Song of Ice and Fire.. the first 5 books - G.R.R. Martin 4/5

    The Casual Vacancy - J. Rowling 4/5

    Barney's Version - Mordechei Richler 4/5

Millennium Trilogy - Stieg Larsson 4/5

  2. Just watched Breakfast at Tiffany's for the squillionth time. I hate the bit where the cat gets chucked out in the rain :( .. poor cat. Love everything else about it (apart from Mickey Rooney's parody of an asian man which sets my cringe gland off).

Ohh I love that movie. I still have a lump in my throat when Audrey sings Moon River at the window even if I see that film a hundred times already.

Yesterday evening I went to a celtic festival (one of the most wonderful event they made here) and I watched Rob Roy when I got home just to keep the celtic atmosphere alive.

  3. We just had a really big quake here.  We get a lot, but this was the biggest I've felt in years, maybe ever, and I'm about 300km from the epicentre of it.  We had some cups and things move on shelves, our TV has moved and a few of my books fell off the shelves.  There are reports coming through of damage in Wellington, where it was closest to.

I heard it on tv and I'm so sorry for your wonderful country but I'm glad you're alright. My land is still devastated from the quake of last year.. but people here is fighitng their way to normality.

  4. I think the age which you read this book at is very critical to how well it is received. It would seem that those who read it in their adolescence adore it and those who read it later in life are not that impressed by it.

I totally agree with you.. it's that kind of story in which the age is fundamental.

  5. Sometimes having the same experience helps understending people, but I don't think it's always true. You know, adolescence is a peculiar period in which everything seems far bigger and heavier than it realy is. But when you grow up and you start dealing with the ordinary problems of life (and sometimes they are really big issues) you forget how you were in the past and how you felt when you were younger and more confused.

I'm glad you'll learn italian.. if you'll need a help, feel free to ask! And if you want to talk about anything else, you know where to find me. ;)

  6. I read the book when I was 23 or something and I thought it was a little exagerated: my adolescence was absolutely different from the one Holden had and mine was full of huge adults-problems.. not all that silly complains Holden had. But then I started to work with teenagers and I re-read thw book with a couple of them. And I started seeing the book under a new light: now I can fully understand how you feel, Lenaelric, because it's the same way my younger friends feel.. confused, alone, misunderstood. I treat Holden a lot better, now!

  7. Yes Eleonora .. very much so .. I didn't want it to finish and was heartbroken to read the reasons why it's unfinished  :( At the end of the story there were notebook extracts from Irène (showing her intentions for the story) and letters from her and her husband to the publishers etc .. I could hardly believe that she had written what I'd just read (so clear and vibrant) when her mind must have been in absolute turmoil.

How many lives interrupted by human crudelty. But the grace and beauty of what Irene Nemirowsky wrote has conquered the death.

  8. So sorry about the news Athena. Foxes can be really nasty.. poor chickens. I do use salted cooled boiled water when my old ladies' paws get an infection. And I keep the paws protected with some sort of bandage. Let us know how Boris is.. and give him and Pamuk a hug, ok?

  9. Wow Kell, you're life is changing so much, and changes can be really good. I wish you all the best.

Lilywhite, I'm glad you're starting a new job.

Athena, how was the cake? Celebratory cakes are the best, their taste is sweeter.. ;)

I'm not really fine these last few days, my health is getting a little worse maybe because it's so hot here. My insulin gives me troubles..and my mood has been definitely higher than this :blush2:

  10. Awww, how sweet!  :wibbly:

Still unsure on the name, aren't you? JoJo has a softer sound and she's sooo sweet I think it'd suit her more.. but the choice is yours, Chalie.

And yes, Lily is brindle and white.. and really small: the red thing behind her in the photo is a bed. :blush2:

  11. Molly is simply wonderful, Poppyshake. So regal.. I don't mind her age, she's perfect. Lily is 10 human-year old but she's the princess here. And, yes, she does obtain everything she wants with those eyes!
