Thanks for great interview although I'm no expert but I wouldn't call her genre 'Paranormal'? Or would you?

I'm also quite liking the sound of The Graveyard Book, will definetly be putting that on my wish list.

Not usually a fan of this type of book but something is drawing me to it, you have sold it to me! Yet another on my growing TBR list!

I have been watching this in the news and I think it is amazing. I used to live in Liverpool and I'm really gutted I am not there to see this. I am trying to convince my husband to have a trip up there this weekend to see it.
I believe it cost over a million to create and organise, I suppose you could question whether with Council cuts this is really helping the City! Anyway, who cares it's brilliant!

If you like Susan Hill's particular style of Ghost Story Janet, then can I also recommend The Man in the Picture and The Mist in the Mirror, both are truly creepy.
These are now on my ever growing wish list!! Thank you!!
Half way through The Women in Black and it is creepy! I love how Susan Hill writes, in such a subtle but clever way.Wish I could write like that!
I have just ordered The Mist in the Mirror from Susan Hill's website and I have received a copy of The Man in the Picture for free.....and that's not the only thing....it's signed!!!! Woop Woop it has made my day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi have read most recently his collection of short stories called Just after Sunset, Salam's Lot and Carrie. So admittedly not very many but I haven't continued because they didn't grab me. I have just started reading Bag of Bones so I will let you know how I get on with that.
I think it's right to say he isn't just a 'horror' writer. I think I actually prefer paranormal horror rather than fantasy/sci-fi stuff. Is there any of King's stuff that would come under this genre? What different types of horror novels would you say there are Michelle?

On reflection I think I have judged too quickly! I am going to go through this thread again and get an idea which books are most popular and I shall read them to see if they change my mind.
I really want to be a SK fan!!!!

Is it just me? I don't pretend to be an expert...but I haven't read one SK novel yet that I actually think is amazing, I have read much less known authors who are able to tell a horror story much better.
Sorry SK, I know I should be a major fan and I know you have succeeded and I applaud you for that...but I personally haven't got to grips with one of your stories yet (long or short)....sorry!
Without sounding too negative I do think he has a way of telling a story in an 'easy' way...I never find it hard to pick up one of his stories, the problem is they fail to grab me.
I think there must be something wrong with me...as I just don't seem to get it.

So, has anyone read any of these classics. I am ashamed to say I haven't and I call myself a horror fiction fan!
I found about him through Amazon when looking for best sellers..I shall be looking into this now and have found a website where you can read his stuff for free.
Just wondering what other people's opinion is on his work?

I would like to read it but I must be honest and say it is because it is JK Rowling, not because I would be that interested in the story!! Is that wrong?!

So I managed to finish 'The Haunted' and quickly create a review before I move onto my next book...so here goes:
Book description: "They wanted a honeymoon adventure. They found a place of nightmares."
The Haunted is a clever novel, full of twists and psychological turns. I wouldn't class it as a stereotypical horror story but more a psychological thriller with a touch of the paranormal.
The story is based in mainly one place, that being the Highlands of Scotland, with only two characters. I believe this demonstrates Valentine's skill as a writer and story teller, she is able to create a simple but effective story.
I visit the Highlands regularly so I can confirm the description and imaginary was perfect, I could imagine it all in detail.
I genuinely can say that I didn't expect some of the twists and turns, usually I am quite good at guessing what will happen next but most of the time I was surprised. The more paranormal aspects of the story had me looking over my shoulder at night, I wouldn't say it scared me as such but I was certainly a little jumpy!
I am a huge horror fan and I my frequent criticism of them is that the story is too far fetched. I can't say this about this story at all, it was just about right for me and was a really believable creation.
At times the novel had a few 'lulls' but I think it was written like that to build the suspense for the next twist.
Characters were built well and I quickly became friends with the protagonist, I particularly enjoyed the ending because of this however it did seem to drag on slightly in comparison to the rest of the novel.
Niki Valentine is already a succesful writer under a pseudonym however she is releasing her second psychological horror in October this year so I will be pre-ordering that!
This book was easy to read, not overcomplicated but very effective. I will be recommending to others for sure.

I read To Kill a Mockingbird at school and found that very powerful. The Help is also more of a lighter story but still has similar meanings, I think the film has come out too so maybe that would be better for children?

I used to work in a smoother bar when I was a student so we experimented a lot with the ingredients we had. A healthy antioxidant one we made was full of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Add these to non concentrated apple juice and a spoonful of frozen low fat yoghurt and you have a winner! (could use fresh yoghurt too). And the naughtiest one we made was yoghurt, a banana, milk and big spoonfuls of nutella (or any form of chocolate spread!).
Keep us informed won't you?!

I'm yet to find 'the one' horror that scares me. I have probably ruined this by the amount of horror films I have seen but the book I am reading now 'The Haunted' by Niki Valentine is pretty creepy and I have to look over my shoulder occasionally when reading at night. I believe she is releasing another book soon so I shall be adding that to my list!!
