Good to hear your library has a copy of Lost Book of Salem, Mexicola! I think you should at least make sure it gets into your top ten TBR . You won't regret it! Thanks Charm, and 'tis a good book to add to your wish list for sure! A truly interesting take on the witch trials

I'm so glad you've added it to your list, Mexicola! I have a feeling you'll love it as much as I did. I haven't read The Heretic's Daughter yet, but am in the book ring and am patiently waiting for it to be my turn . The Lost Book of Salem is wonderful!! I would gladly mail you my copy if that means you'll read it sooner . I can't say enough good things about it and am SO glad I read it!

The Last Witchfinder by James Morrow Synopsis via Powell's: Jennet Stearne's father hangs witches for a living in Restoration England. But when she witnesses the unjust and horrifying execution of her beloved aunt Isobel, the precocious child decides to make it her life's mission to bring down the Parliamentary Witchcraft Act. Armed with little save the power of reason, and determined to see justice prevail, Jennet hurls herself into a series of picaresque adventures — traveling from King William's Britain to the fledgling American Colonies to an uncharted island in the Caribbean, braving West Indies pirates, Algonquin Indian captors, the machinations of the Salem Witch Court, and the sensuous love of a young Ben Franklin. For Jennet cannot and must not rest until she has put the last witchfinder out of business. An amazing work by Mr. Morrow! I would leave it at that but that's not a very worthwhile review, is it? Would I say I'm grateful to Mac for this recommendation would be a bit of an understatement. The journey this novel takes throughout the world and time itself, through also the age of enlightenment and scientific learning, I would gladly take again and again! It was clever, hilarious at times, yet seriously dealt with the subject matter that to me can be very frustrating and maddening! Jennet was the perfect kind of heroine, and her struggle to disprove the supposed 'proof' that men like her father used to convict innocent women of witchcraft was noble indeed. I also loved the sometimes narration of the 'other' author of this book, Newton's Principa Mathematica. This was a very clever way of weaving Mr. Newton's theories throughout the story, and how his book gave the basis of science throughout time. I'm not surprised at the amount of time it took for Mr. Morrow to write this book. You can tell how meticulous he was in his research on every page! My review doesn't really do it justice, but it is HIGHLY recommended. I hope more will read it!

I always use the paper bookmarks they give away free at 1/2 Price Books, since my cat loves to chew on the ends and I can't have her doing that to my sparkly Twilight bookmarks! I did just come upon a couple as I was going through my books though - one with a nice drawing of seashells on it and a Borders one with a block print of a woman playing violin and Longfellow on the other side .

Both excellent choices, Mexicola!! I loved both of these (especially the Kostova) and therefore highly approve. Can't wait for you to read them!

We watched A Single Man last night on DVD. Colin Firth was spectacular, but I was mad at the ending .

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Outsiders, Kylie! Have you seen the film? If you ever decide to read more Hinton, I really loved That Was Then, This is Now. I read a bit more of Topics yesterday (between time spent on here, lol) but was out last night so didn't get any more in. Hopefully I'll get a bit more in today as I'd love to finish it before my vacation, since I've already got 2 books in my head that I'll be taking with me. -

I'd never read a parody book before either, CW, and I loved it! Honestly, I kept wondering how they came up with some of the jokes. It was hilarious! I need to find a copy to have for my own since I'd love to read it again . -

Kylie - what did you think of the Hinton? I so enjoyed the Outsiders . Cali - you MUST move the Twilight Parody up a buncha notches in your TBR pile! It's so hilarious, I was practically falling out of my chair! While the forum was being moved, I finished The Last Witchfinder by James Morrow, and started Topics About Which I Know Nothing by Patrick Ness. -
Excellent Muse purchases, Chesil! I think the most recent thing I picked up was 'Brothers' by the Black Keys. My friend also burned me a CD of Yeasayer, Phoenix and MGMT tunes .

Mucho thanks from me too, Michelle!! It's very snazzy and sparkly here, which is just the way we like it

Exellent review, Pontalba! I too loved this book and couldn't get enough of the history and reading about the shark's natural instincts. I also found it fascinating how the shark's meandering path up to the shores of the northeast just happen to coincide with the newly-popular practice of sea bathing, which resulted in so much tragedy.

I LOVED that book, Pontalba! I read it earlier this year and found it so fascinating . I read more of The Last Witchfinder last night and tonight after dinner, and am about 120 pages from the end.
