  1. I think it would be very difficult to make into a very good film because there are certain elements I think Hollywood would feel they had to cut which are, in my opinion, integral to the plot - things like the continued breastfeeding, which would be difficult to film with an actual 5-y-o, or even a young actor slightly older than that. People tend t obe wiggged out enough by breastfeeding (which is a shame) without seeing long-term nursing in films. If they cut that out, it would change a large part of the relationship dynamics between Ma and jack, and how their relationship is viewed in the outside world.

That said, I would love to see them try, so long as they were true to the story.

I also agree that this book would be difficult to adapt into a film. This is because the story is told through Jack and his specific vocabulary, so I think his perspective would be difficult to convey visually.

  2. The last movie I saw was The Knowing. It was really disappointing. It started promising and interesting but how longer we were watching, how weirder it got. Especially the end was just awful. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time by watching this movie.

I agree, this is a terrible film! It shows so much promise at the beginning, but the ending not only raised questions, but also made me think that it was pointless watching the film in the first place.

  3. I wonder, those who particularly loved this episode, is The Hound Of the Baskerville's your favourite (or one of your favourite) Holmes stories? For me, I was never as enamoured of that particular tale, and I wonder if I am predisposed to not enjoying it quite so much...

I haven't read any of the 'Sherlock Holmes' novels and as I was watching this week's episode, I did wonder how much of the original text is contained within the show. Does this series generally stick close to the text?

I also had a problem with Russel Tovey's accent, it wasn't what I was expecting.

  4. I have not heard of hardly any of them either Janet, maybe it is because after the show they become celebrities :)

I had heard of a few of them, but I don't that there are any celebs that I would get excited about seeing. Also you're right, I'm sure most of them are on there to give their careers a boost.

Saying that though, I do think that Georgie and Charlene have real potential already. We will just have to wait until next week, to see what the rest of the contestants are like!

  5. 'Something Dangerous' by Penny Vincenzi

I can't write a full review of 'Something Dangerous', because I didn't read more than 25-30 pages, before deciding to put this book away. The reason being, was that I found the characters within this novel to be so obnoxious and obsessed with money, that I could not relate to them or their situations in any way. I felt that it was like a 'Jackie Collins' novel, set in the 20's and I don't enjoy Jackie Collin's novels either.

  6. I started reading 'Something Dangerous' by Penny Vincenzi, but I have had to abandon it. I did try and get to 100 pages before deciding whether or not to continue, but the characters were so obnoxious that I couldn't read any more!

So now I'm embarking on 'Fall of Giants' by Ken Follett. Being 941 pages this is a doorstep of a book. However, having read and enjoyed 'Pillars of the Earth', I'm sure that I'm going to enjoy reading this.

  7. Hahaha. You know what? I can't imagine a group of people being interested in what's in my diary.

Exactly! The audience wouldn't know what/who you were talking about anyway......unless it contained your friends and family, then it would be a quite different situation.

  8. I'm a big fan of Kate Atkinson's, particularly her 'Jackson Brodie' series. I have read, 'Started Early, Took my Dog', 'When Will There Be Good News?', 'Case Histories' and 'One Good Turn'. I think that she has a fantastic style of writing, her characters are realistic and she has the ability to weave several strands of plot together, without confusing her audience.

I also thought that BBC 6-part adaptation of her novels was brilliant, even with the changes the producers made to location.

  9. Publisher: Fontana Books

ISBN: Unfortunately the edition that I have doesn't seem to have an ISBN number.

    Length: 191 Page

    What the 'blurb' says:

As the priest ended his ministry, the dying woman spoke again.

"Stopped...It must be stopped...You will see...?"

The priest spoke with reassuring authority.

"I will do what is necessary..You can trust me..."

A doctor and an ambulance arrived a little later.

The landlady received them with gloomy triumph.

"Too late as usual!" she said......'

Opening line: 'The Espresso machine behind my shoulder hissed like an angry snake.'

    What's good about this novel?

Not being a fan of traditional murder mysteries, I was a little unsure whether I was going to enjoy this novel. However I thought that this was very well written and I was easily absorbed in the story.

Whilst I had the impression that Christie's novel focus on one main detective, for example Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, 'The Pale Horse' was a little different. It had not one, but two central characters, Mark Easterbrook and Detective-Inspector Lejeune. I found both characters to work well within the story and I didn't feel a conflict of attention within Christie's writing. In general, I thought that the characters were fully constructed and mostly realistic.

At first, I felt that the storyline was a little too far fetched and silly. However, I was relieved to find that the conclusion to the story was logical. I also enjoyed the fact that at no point during the story, was I able to guess 'whodunnit'.

    What's wrong with this novel?

Possibly because I am not familiar with the genre, I felt that even though I enjoyed reading the novel, it didn't grab me. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with the book, it's just that maybe this isn't my preferred genre. I would read more of Christie's novels in future though.

    Is this worth a read?

If you are looking for some escapist reading, then you may enjoy this. I thought that 'The Pale Horse' was a fun read.

  10. Good review. I'm waiting for this one to become available at the local library as I'm not quite sure I'd like it enough to shell out money for it! I loved Small Island but wasn't that keen on Never Far From Nowhere. She is someone I would always give a go though, purely on the strength of Small Island.

The more I hear about 'Small Island', the more I want to read this.I think that it will have to go on my TBR list.

  11. I've Just finished 'The Pale Horse' by Agatha Christie. I'm not generally a reader of murder mysteries, but I really enjoyed this book. I think I might read some more of Christie's novels in the future.

Now, I'm about to start on 'Something Dangerous' by Penny Vincenzi. I haven't read anything by this author before, but a friend of mine gave me this book to read, saying that she had enjoyed it.

  12. I have kept a diary on and off since I was a teenager and couldn't imagine divulging its details out loud to an audience. Partly, that's because a lot of the things that I worried about years ago, would just be cringeworthy now.

In reference to blogging, the blog I write is of a specific topic (books) so it's quite general. In my opinion, the blogosphere is definitely not the sort of place to be revealing very personal details.
