  1. Inexplicables ~ Rate 3/5 About the book (from Amazon) Adventures await Rector “Wreck ’em” Sherman. About to turn eighteen, he’s facing ejection from the orphanage that passed for home. He should also choose a trade, but work is scarce in steam-powered Seattle. And Rector has more unconventional plans. He’s started dealing in sap, a yellow narcotic produced by rebels and outlaws within the city’s toxic walled enclave. What’s worse, he’s been sampling his wares. Other problems include being haunted by an old friend with a grudge. The pressure builds until he sneaks behind the wall himself, seeking both (un)gainful employment and excitement. As rumoured, he finds a terrifying host of the hungry undead, and then there’s the monster. Rector's certain that his attacker wasn’t human, or undead. But he’s going to need more proof than his own addled word to expose it. His new mission becomes a compulsion when others witness the creature’s destructiveness, and give its kind a name. The Inexplicables. My Thoughts My second 'steampunk' novel by Cherie Priest (although its book 5) and i loved it. I love that it had the same characters in it as Boneshaker and they've all come a long way since then, the character development was nice to see. Again its action packed with a new guy, Rector as the main character. Whilst Rector is not massively likable, a sap addict that will nab anything that's not nailed down, the story is gripping enough that you don't really mind. Only thing i would say which was a slight down side is the the 'inexplicable' monster is actually only a small part of the storyline and is kind of irrelevant but again it didnt really take anything away from the story for me. I wish i had read the books in order, sadly Clementine is out of print so i couldn't actually get it and ened up ordering Inexpliacbles instead of Dreadnought by mistake but i really did enjoy it so nothing lost there
  2. Yes its by Cherie Priest The order of the books are as follows, you can read them as stand alone although better to read Boneshaker first as that gives the story of how the blight started. Boneshaker Clementine Dreadnought Ganymede Inexplicables It was really good, the Inexplicables was good too but Boneshaker was better. Glad its got people interested, we need more steampunk fans
  3. Boneshaker ~ Rate 5/5 About the book (From Amazon) Ezekiel Blue’s father committed a crime, unleashing a deadly menace into steampowered Seattle. And his bereaved family has paid the price. Now, Ezekiel is determined to clear his father’s name, risking death and the undead in the attempt. Sixteen years ago, as the American Civil War dawned, gold brought hordes to the frozen Klondike. Fanatical in their greed, Russian prospectors commissioned Dr Leviticus Blue to create a great machine, to mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus the Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine was born. But the Boneshaker went awry, destroying downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas. Anyone who breathed its fumes turning into the living dead. The devastated city is now walled in to contain the blight. But unknown to Briar, his widowed mother, Ezekiel is going in. His quest will take him into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive. My Thoughts This was my first 'steampunk' read and i wasn't overly sure what to expect from it but I'm glad I broke into the genre with this book. I was hooked from the beginning til end. The idea is really original and takes a new spin (the blight gas) on the your normal zombies (although the undead are not really part of the main story in anyway... they are just part of the furniture in the new Seattle.) The plot was really good and theres lots of action, slaying undead, crashing airships, mad Dr's, funky steampunk gadgets, but it felt like it was leading to something bigger at the end. It wasn't disappointing at all, there was a good twist in the end that i wasn't expecting and there are 4 other books in the series so all in all i really cant complain. It was a good read, id defiantly recommend it to anyone looking for some thing steam punk or just a bit of light fantasy. I'll certainly be reading the others (if i can get my hands on the elusive out of print 'Clementine')
  4. Yes it is a really good book... I started it on Saturday and will easily finish it tonight! You cant put it down, definite must read Only thing is I've read it so quickly I've not have a chance to decide whats next!
  5. 7. Ah great thank you! I only ask because i actually read the Inexpliacables first. I ordered it by mistake then realized it was No.5. I actually asked the author (or someone replied to my e-mail that works under her i suspect) and she said you could read them all independently. Whilst you can, after reading Boneshaker i really think that you get so much more out of the books reading them in order. After reading book 5 then book 1 it gave so much more back ground to the characters and quite a few major things i wasn't aware of. Shes right about Clementine being hard to get hold of, i cant find it anywhere!
  8. Hi All, can anyone tell me what order the Clock work century books by Cherie Priest go in? Amazon says it goes Boneshaker Dreadnought Clementine Ganymede Inexplicables But on every other site i've looked at it says Clementine is the second and Dreadnought is the 3rd?
  9. Hey guys, yeh its been a while! Soo finally finished 50 shades.... not good. Anyway we'll forget about that lol. Started on Sirius, its good, much better than the last book, yet to finish Anubis Gates, sorry Karsa! Whats every one reading now'a days?
  10. Soooo i havent been on here forever, sorry guys and gals! To be honest i havent actually read for a very long time. All sorts of things have been going on at home and ive simply not had the time. Ive almost finished the Anubis Gates, its been good but sadly all the stopping and starting has definitely ruined it. Ive ruined my street cred and have now started 50 Shades of Grey. Its not my cup of tea at all but i thought id go along with it after all the hype and my sister and bestfriends nagging me over not reading it. Im 3 chapters in, not going to lie it is poorly written and mostly gramatically incorrect but the story line is bareable and i feel after my poor attempt at the Anubis gates that i really oughts to get into it properly. Ive also bought Sirius by Ofla Stapledon, i cant wait to read it, thats more up my street really and i already know im going to enjoy it. I hope every one has been well whilst ive been away!
  11. Ah ok so might well be worth reading. Yes Dreamcatcher was the one, see it was that bad I couldnt even remember the title
  12. Yes ive heard alot about Dark Matter too, funny enough I read Michelle Paver's childern's books when I was younger! The Shining was a great film but I never got it I'm not keen of Stephen King after attempting Dream Caster I think it was? Anyway I gave up after a few chapters
  13. Hehe yeh you can come out now I'm thinking of reading The Women in Black after. I don't normally go for ghost stories but ive heard good things about it. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know
  14. Your off the hook Karsa, I'm really enjoying The Anbis Gates! At first I was concered that it was going to be a bit too much but I'm about a third of the way in and its great, thanks for the recommendation!
  15. No they arent hard to get at all. E-bay, amazon and even waterstones often sell signed copies. Ive never met any of the authors that have signed my books ive either bought them when the author had just become recognised and sold a few copies signed or I bought them signed on-line. Another thing I'm quite fond of is antique books being signed by their original owner (not the author) I have The Old Curiosity Shop by Charls Dickins and on the inside of the book it says To Michael, a gift your loving sister Violet, 02 Jan 1801
  16. Hehe nowt wrong with cheating. I finally finished The Night Cirus but didnt enjoy it at all, I wont be forcing my self to read a really boring book again like that, as some one said 'its really bad for your mojo' So what next? Did you read Flowers for Algernon in the end?
  17. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - 2/5 I don't even know where to start with this review. I'm so glad its over. Every one raved about this book and I have noooo idea why! The characters are the most two dimensional people you will ever come across and there is literally no emotion or connection with them at all or the story for that matter. You occasionally get the odd nostalgic feeling but that really doesn't make up for having to trawl through the rest of the book. The romance is ok, probably some of the more readable chapters are about the romance but again this is scarce. I think considering how short this book is its taken me the longest time to get through it because the thought of reading it bored me to death. It didnt help that the hype surrounding this book was major, I was expecting so so much and it fell flat on its face. If you want magic and forbidden romance read Daughter of Smoke and Bone, its way better! Onwards and upwards though, I've just ordered The Anubis Gates as recommended by Karsa, I can't wait for it to arrive!
  18. I'm really looking forward to it, plus it can be any more boring than The Night Circus lol so I think I'm on to a winner!
  19. I loved the Clock Work Prince too! I notice you have The Night Circus on your TBR list too, I'm reading it at the moment and really havent enjoyed it so it be interested on your thoughts if you decide to read it!
  20. Cowl sounds really good! I havent been on here for a while but you'll be pleased to know I have just ordered The Annubis Gate
  21. 280 pages into the night circus and its starting to get ok. I decided not to abandon it but I did take a week and a half out. Ive also been really busy with my new tropical tank so ive not read as much. Looking forward to making a fresh start on a new book to get me back into the swing of reading though!
  22. Yes you guys are right, I read it again last night and the more I read it the more I resent it. I'm almost starting to hate it which in reality the book doesnt really warrant hate, its just because I'm forcing myself to read something that I find really boring. I really don't like abandoning books but I feel that the night circus is going to end up next to Neil Gaimans Anansi Boys on the abandoned shelf Well there must be something good in it that other people have recognized so maybe you'll love it. I just can't get into it at all. If you do read it please enlighten me
  23. Well I'm 205 pages into The Night Circus (yes its taken 6 days to read 35 pages ) and its still boring as hell. Ive not read it for the past 3 days and have no time for this book what so ever. I have no idea what over people saw in it! Please lord give me the strength I need to complete this book, is all I can say on this matter!
  24. I loved it definatly have a look. The read up doesnt give the book any credit, its so much better than it sounds
  25. Yes I think the hype has superseded the book unfortunately. I had the same issue with The Windup Girl. At least I'm not the only one has felt this. It is annoying though, I was really looking forward to it... on the up though I have been considering my next book... its between Valis by Philip K Dick and The Anubis Gate recommended by you! Fingers crossed! Theres still time. I don't think it will be as good as Daughter of Smoke and Bone though
