  1. Happy Birthday VF My birthday was yesterday ! Did you have some cake ?.
  2. Good news Downton Abbey,season 3 coming ! http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57368439-10391698/shirley-maclaine-joins-the-cast-of-downton-abbey/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+cbsnews%2Ffeed+%28CBSNews.com%29&utm_content=My+Yahoo
  3. Emelee I haven't read any of those you mentioned ,but many years ago I read a book that would have compared in a way to the girls held captive for extended lengths of time by some perverted person . I have no clue what the name of the book was or even when this happened . I'm thinking maybe the 1980's ? Anyhow, this man and his WIFE decided to kidnap a teen girl .It was the man's sick fantasy to have another girl there besides his wife, who he could also have available when the mood hit him. The wife of this guy was sicker than him ,to me anyhow, because she agreed to go along with it, helped him plan it and helped pick out and kidnap a girl when they went out scouting for one . The guy kept this girl in a BOX he had made that slid under their bed ,so at first she was captive in this box, being unable to get away. This went on for years ,and as time went on, they began allowing her out at times .She eventually got away .I don't remember how she finally did, but she went into therapy afterwards and may still go for help. It really messed her mind up . I know some of the Jaycee story, but not from a book. I saw an hour interview on tv with her not long ago. It seems she was kept with no way to escape in the beginning, but as time wore on, things became a little easier for her to make an escape, although she didnt for many years. I think in these cases it's all in mind control, these men tell them things to make them believe they will never get out,and if they do,that no one will want them after what has happened, or else no one will believe them if they tell their story . After a long time of this, the girl just believes it and becoms used to this life . It's really hard to believe you could ever become used to a situation like that, but I guess eventually you'd stop fighting it and just give up . It is a very disturbing subject ,but in a way, it's good that these type of people are written about. I think it may help professionals learn to diagnose certain mental disorders, helps police and psychiatrists to understand what these girls go through and study how their minds work during these situations. So maybe in a really weird way, the stories need to be told so people are more aware of what can happen and how people cope and survive .
  4. Welcome from Ohio I think you'll like it here . Friendly people ,good coversations.
  5. VF 9 books is great for one month ! Good job . Which one did you like the best out of your 1st month's list ?
  6. No,VF Not stupid. Just probably taken advantage of at times for being kind . Some people tend to use it as a weakness to get the most out of it . I have had a lifelong experience in what being kind can do,so I have begun turning in the other direction . NOT a good route to take, but after you have turned the other cheek, used your OTHER cheeks and gotten them both kicked, I have adopted a new plan. Not a GOOD one ,but one in which I don't get hurt as often . When you run out of CHEEKS you ether start re-using them,or defend them .
  7. VF You look like a very good kind-hearted person . You can see it in your eyes .
  8. Unsolved Disappearances in the Great Smoky Mountains This was a Kindle book. I don't remember if it was free, if not, it was low cost . I thought it would be interesting because I like books about things like this, where there is someone missing and they have never been found .It is intriguing to read about these cases , so you wonder what may have happened to the people. but no one will ever know in most of them . At the beginning, it says that around 100 people have met with some sort of foul play here in the Smokies . Kinda makes me get the cold chills knowing that I have been there twice ,and some of these people's bones could have been laying someplace where we were having a picnic . They chose 7 cases to tell about in the book .Some were small kids ,others teens, a few few adults . Some intentionally wandered off due to trouble with the law, others just fell off the edge of the earth,no explanations or theories of why . It wasn't a long book, but it was very interesting ,especially since I've been there before. It's a beautiful place, but I do believe a person could become lost in there never to be found . 3/5
  9. Hi David In answer to your Kindle questions : I have had 3- I had the Kindle 2 (white ,a keyboard at the bottom and a little larger than their newer ones which are a charcoal grey color. ) It worked really well and I liked it, but my pre-teen granddaughter wanted one really bad,so I gave mine to her . My husband bought me the Kindle 3 (grey, keyboard on bottom) which I have owned maybe a year or so. I like it a lot, very lightweight .No backscreen lightup .The screen size is nice and the page behind the print looks like a piece of paper in a way. They are really nice ,thin, easy to carry ,and have had no problems at all with it . I also recently got the Kindle Fire. I like it the best, because it does have the backlit screen, like a computer screen. It also has several settings for print size, and 3 settings for the background color of your reading screen. On top of that, it has many other things .It plays videos, connects to the internet, plays music ,games, etc. The pictures in books are VERY clear and pretty . Love the colors that show up so nicely . The sound is good . Thickness wise,it is thicker than the Kindle, a little heavier, but still very lightweight for all the stuff it does. I REALLY like mine a lot . So if you are purchasing a Kindle, it depends on what all you plan on using it for . If I were recommending one to someone who only wants it for reading books, I'd go with the newest generation with no keyboard . The keyboard to me is pointless, unless you want to shop for books while on it,and need to type in a search word for a book . Hope this helps you decide .
  10. Frankie Good idea, I'll jam the book in the freezer if it gets to be too much . If the Hubster finds it in there, he won't think twice. Somedays I'm a little scatterbrained and I run all over the house searching for my car keys ,only to find them in my hand . He thinks it's hiarious. So a book about a Lobotomy in the freezer ? No worries .
  11. Frankie and Poppy The army-looking guy is meant for me, not for anyone else. It's to remind me to start another book. I've been slipping the past couple days. I wouldn't turn him loose on you guys . By the way,Frankie, I noticed our library had My Lobotomy ,so what did I do but go get it today . I'm not so sure that was a good idea. The cover alone gives me the willies. I'll see if I can read it or not .It sounds interesting, but I do believe when they start yanking the ice pick from the drawer, I will probably need a Valium to keep reading .
  12. Ahem !!! Attention Julie Stop being a lily-livered ,yellow bellied pantywaist and start reading again . You have been backsliding the past few days. Time to straighten up and fly right . Now get your REAR in GEAR or I'll make you do 20 pushups. We ALL know you couldn't do TWO ,so you have no choice in the matter . Now READ .
  13. Interesting to read some updates in here on people and their kindles . I was going to suggest to Dawn ,making categories for her books so they are easier to locate . I didn't do that in the beginning, and it got very confusing for me to keep track of what I had ,so now I have them divided kinda like the library does,so if I want history, there it is, mystery, click on it and there's my list . I also have the kindle app thing on my laptop,so I can start a book on my kindle, then update my computer to the page I'm on ,and keep reading on here,so it works well for me like that if I keep the same book going in 2 places .
  14. Hi David In regards to your Kindle books price question : In my opinion, I rarely care what the price is. If it's a book I really want to read, I'll pay whatever price they ask . I know there are many people on the Kindle message boards who say they won't pay over a certain amount fora book, but if it's a book I want, another dollar or two is no big deal to me . I have to admit, I would much rather pay a lower price ,and I also like finding the free ones ,especially ones that have been out of print a long time, or sometimes they call them "lost works of " ..whatever . Many of the free ones I choose are really old stories that someone wrote long ago about life in their times,so it's neat to read what it was like back then . I haven't had much luck with the new writers so far. I haven't read any that I thought were so terrific that I wanted to read another of theirs . So,for the most part, the newer ones have been duds, the older ones treasures. Good luck in your writing. I wish you success
  15. Poppy I have no clue how to dance. Never have in my life,so I'm sure I would have gotten LOTS of chuckles, but luckily(or stupidly), that type stuff never bothers me . I'm quite comfortable in front of people ,any sized group,so it really wouldn't bother me if I looked stupid. It would have been kinda funny I think . Thank you for the video,it was SO cute ! Can you tell me if they have announced what Kate's baby will be,or do they not tell ahead of time ? Frankie Let's just say at this point, it's best to let sleeping dogs lie . The renewal of the vows would be a HUGE disaster unless we were the only attendees, which would be pointless. Why not just stay home, eat a big bowl of ice cream while watching Biggest Loser ,and save money on a big shindig that no one would come to ? To make it short , let's just say that the parent situation was better then than now,so it's best to leave it alone. If I wrote a book about my life, people would think I am lying my behind off, because that many bad things cannot happen in one family. I know one that it did happen in . SO, I try my hardest to look forward instead of back .
  16. Frankie Thanks for the info on your avatar. I know the show is VERY popular here, but we have never watched it . Some shows seem like they may be geared towards a younger age of people ,so I don't watch most of them. I have a few favorite shows, but some nights we don't even turn the tv on,depending on what is on . The only CLIP I saw from The Office is the one with the wedding . I'm sure you guys have seen the wedding video that the couple from over here made of their own wedding. I can't remember what state they are from, but their wedding entrance was all the wedding party dancing down the aisles ? I have watched it a GAZILLION times . I love watching it because you can see the joy in their faces, and we were happy like that too on our wedding day. I keep wishing we would have screwed up the courage to dance down the aisle . We were 19 ,and neither set of parents were FOR the marriage . It wasn't a HAVE to marriage,so that wasn;'t the problem . I think it was our age .My mother has a famous saying that you 'd be smarter going to your own funeral than getting married. She is notorious for saying it every time we hear people driving through town beeping their horns ofter their wedding. I have never understood why she is so against marriage. My dad has spent his lifetime trying to make her happy, but she never is satisfied . My dad would have been fine with us getting married if we had been older. He BEGGED me to put it off 4 years and he'd pay my way through college. At the time, I was burnt out on school and didnt want to go on ,but now I wish I would have, only because you only get that chance once and after it's gone, it's too late. We would have still married but not as soon . Anyhow, our wedding pictures are hilarious ,with our parents. My mother in law looks like a pouting little kid ,my mom looks like General Patton ready for battle, and the 2 dads kinda look shell-shocked, like they are trying to figure out a way to keep the 2 moms from having a Smackdown out in the church yard . F U N N Y My mom told me our marriage would never last. I think she's right. We've been married almost 35 years,so one of these days, it might just crumble . It's just taking a REALLY long time.
  17. Frankie Yes, it was really difficult to get through that part of our schooling. I'm thankful we only had to work there a week. I actually got so sick from seeing all this, I had to call off school on the last day there. I just couldn't do it . I think I mentioned they shut this place down the year after we were there. I don't know who polices these places, but they would have been in violations in lots of areas. I havent mentioned all of it. There are a few things that are just too gross to put on here . I think that's why ,watching the Cuckoo's Nest movie made me so upset. I was a MESS after watching it. It was shortly after our week in this mental place,so it gave me nightmares for a long time . Sadly, we had another huge place like this in our area that shut down about 5 years ago due to lack of funds. I'd never been to that one,so not sure if it was any better or not . I often wondered what they did with all those people. All the family members were notifed that they'd have to find lodgings elsewhere for their patients ,but we live in a very rural area,so not close to major towns that might have more sources for people like this . Chalie Your book sounds good ( I hope) . I have a really hard time reading some of them that go into too much detail .Brings back too many bad memories of that place . There's also one I have been eyeing, but really don'tt think I could get through it . It has very high ratings ,so it must be good : My Lobotomy . Let us know how you get along with the library book .
  18. Janet Yea, I kinda thought that's what they must have done with the book you mentioned. I wonder why they have different names ,and lots of books have different covers here than there . Wish I knew more about the book business and why they do those things. Especially the covers ... can't seem to figure it out . The one you mentioned on your wish list is also in my favorites . I'm trying hard to refrain from buying a new book every time I hear about one ..Putting me in here is like putting an alcoholic behind the bar to serve the drinks. Not a good idea .
  19. Ruth Thank you for telling me they had more episodes in season 2. Right now, it only lists the first 3 and they seem to be releasing one per week for some reason. Anyhow, maybe I'll wait and get the whole season once it is all complete, rather than dribbling a few out here and there . Timmo I'm not sure what type shows you like ,but I would think anyone who watches this would find something in it that interested them. The home is absolutely beautiful.Scenery gorgeous. Very witty writing .Each character has their own separate story going,so it gives you a little bit of everything. In parts sad, but each episode also has something to make you chuckle. The 2 old ladies are funny ,along with the little kitchen girl. She's a real live wire . I hope you enjoy it .
  20. I think this one was one of the free kindle books I got last week when I was leafing through the free books . Sounds like it ought to be a good one. I thought the title was unusual,so wanted to see what a "nobody" has to write about , I guess I was hoping it'd be a little like Augustus Carp, which I read many years ago ,and remembered it had a lot of humorous areas in it .
  21. Hi Frankie Alright, I'm too curious. Who is the guy on your avatar ?
  22. Thank you Ruth . I'm making a list at Amazon of books you guys mention . I'll add this one to it .
  23. Poppy and Ruth - Yes, I agree, it's a nice twist on things to have the 2 "bad guy " characters on there . I went back last night to watch the last few shows listed for season 2,and find they aren't free, you have to pay to get them,so I will do that here soon .I try to avoid using my credit card unless it's an emergency,so I'll have to go get a gift card to put money on my account . So, are there only the 3 in Season 2,then the show is over ? I hope not, it would have been good to go one for a long time when there are so many characters on the show . Mary is downright evil hearted in a way ,but once in awhile you feel a little sorry for her because she is so pretty, she could really have a nice life if she'd just try to change her nasty personality . I was hoping Edith would be able to keep hold of the older oyfriend she had. She seemed to truly like him . The youngest girl is so beautiful,as is their mother . I like the humor in the show, especially the 2 older ladies that seem to bicker with each other quite a bit. They are really funny .
  24. Wow Janet Very impressive list of details. You are so organized !
  25. Thanks for the recommendation Pontalba. It sounds very good and would be good to read a book told so you can hear both viewpoints at once They usually just tell one side's version of it .
