  1. Hi , Lucybird . I'm about halfway now . It was his South American trilogy that introduced me to LdB and I thought they were excellent . Do persevere with Birds Without Wings , if nothing else it's a good history lesson !
  2. My mother would read Catherine Cookson etc and my Dad would read the racing page of his newspaper , so I couldn't say I was influenced by my parents . My wife reads but her book choice is quite different to mine as is my daughter's and my son is glued to his x box !
  3. The trouble with me is that I cannot throw books away although I was forced to a couple of years ago ! My guess would be over a thousand , and several more in two sheds .
  4. ' The Book Thief ' made me cry and I've never cried at a book before . For a book to do that is pretty impressive .
  5. I very rarely buy a new book as the nearest bookshop is about 90 miles away [ Inverness ] , and I get a real kick out of buying a second hand book cheaply and it arrives in almost pristine condition . However , I did get a copy of James Kelman's ' How Late it was..' the other day and the first few pages were covered in notes !
  6. After finishing Jonathan Littell's ' The Kindly Ones ' , I did go back to the first few pages , but it took me so long to read it , that I went to another instead .
  7. Hi , new member . I am reading Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernieres just now , after buying it years ago and being put off after the first few pages .
