  1. Yes she has read a lot of la plante and mcdermaid thats why I was after an author perhaps not so well known as its hard to find something she hasnt read in that genre x
  2. Right I want to get a really good crime thriller for my mam for Mother's day - she doesn't read much else basically! She likes Greg Iles and old Martina Cole and I'm looking for a new author for her, someone a bit different! She's no shrinking violet so anything gruesome and shocking is welcome! Suggestions most welcome! Many thanks!!!
  3. Where do you live then? Wow 12 books a month impressive!
  4. Ah its a pity we didnt live near each other we could start our own group off! One of the guys I spoke to said shouldnt I be in the pub rather than a book club haha. how many books do you reckon you go through then? I'm probably on 3 a month or so! Not nearly as much as I want!
  5. Hi Chesilbeach I totally know how you feel! I've been in contact will a few of the book club contacts in my area, gave them a call to see what the crack is and discovered they are mainly groups of retirees that gather and the average age is 60-80. Now I am certainly not ageist and think opinions from those with so much life experience would be invaluable however part of the reason of joining a book club would be to get me out socialising more and it would be nice if there are more book clubs for those in their 20s and 30s. I will keep looking though and hopefully find something although I'm not holding my breath! I did however upon phoning one of the organisers of these retirees groups have a great chat with him on the phone for about 20 minutes about some books we'd read lately and I had such a difference of opinion on some things, probably due to the 40 years age difference but he was so excited to have me in the group because of this ! However they met in the morning and alas, I work so it was a no go!
  6. I was just wondering if there were many folk on here part of a book club that does not include online? I've always been tempted to join one mainly to meet other book enthusiasts but have no idea where to look for one!
  7. Hey not sure if anyone is still a member who replied to this post - I've just started to commute to work now that it is a little warmer, just! It's only about six miles there but I never see any other female cycling commuters! I know what thought as having hat head and mutter splatterings on my face is not a great look for work!
  8. can't say I have as I always have loads I'm dying to read next!
  9. I've read the bomb maker which was quite exciting
  10. Ooh I'll have to get the book finished - I'm a quarter way through it but struggled as the print was so small and the pages see through!
  11. don't be put off I'm flying through it. It certainly not a slog x
  12. I think its hard in the evening when my partner wants to watch t.v but I want to read! I feel bad disapearing out the room maybe I should just get some ear plugs!
  13. Well I thought I would start off my own little reading list starting with Wally Lamb - I know this Much is True This is a pretty chunky read at 900 pages but so far I am half way through and loving it! I've never read any of Wally Lamb and did not know what to expect but will certainly have a look for more of his books when I'm finished even though I have tons on my bookshelf to wade through! I think I need to curb my book buying until I have read some more of them and/or have bought another book shelf!
  14. Six hours of reading a great novel today! No better way to spend a Sunday!

    1. SueK

      SueK

  15. Vodkafan, I'm jelous I wish I had time to read so much! My other half tends to kick off if I'm with him and my nose is stuck in a book for too long! Just jelous I think!
  16. Hi yes I have read The Book Thief I loved it - is that what you're reading at the moment?. x

  17. Just thought I would say hi! Am new on this site and just having a mootch around! There seems to be a lot of people from bonny Scotland! Jo x

  18. oh also are the Phillip Pullman books not more for teenagers? Not sure if I would be too old for them!?
  19. I think anyone with friends who read are really lucky - I would love to be able to chat about books at work or socially but tend to keep my trap shut as I'm usually greeted by blank stares...I can tell they're thinking - she needs to get out more haha! I promise I do have a life beyond reading ! If I could cycle and read at the same time I would be in heaven haha
  20. a nice cold ice cold vodka and lemonade with ice and lemon mmmmm scrumptious and well deserved me thinks!!
  21. Oooh thank you they all sound really good - I actually have Neverwhere on my bookshelf waiting for me I didn't really think it was classed as fantasy! Van't wait to read it though the reviews sound great! I can't stand the thought of Harry Potter basically because I hated the films but I know it is wrong taint the books with my opinion on the films so I won't knock them and will give them a go! I can easily borrow them off my niece! Also forgot to mention I have read the Lord of the Rings books however I was pretty young at the time and really struggled so I may enjoy them more now I'm ahem ... nearly 30 ack! I'll definately give those suggestions a go and any more anyone has to offer...I had been stuck in a crime fiction rut for a long time but I'm really starting to expand my tastes..probably again due to my increasing age but also because the crime fiction was just getting so repetitive and predictive. thank you!
  22. Hi all I wonder if anyone could recommend me my first fantasy novel? I have never touched anything under the fantasy genre I suppose because I have an impression that it is a bit cheesy and ridiculous....however fantasy fans are so enthusiastic and I want to know what the fuss is all about! So if anyone can think of a good starting point for me I would be most grateful! Jo
