  1. Is anyone else planning on ordering HBO just so they can watch the Game of Thrones mini-series when it starts in April? Cost 17$ per month... Or should I just wait for the DVDs ?
  2. I work from home because my computer at the office isnt connected to the internet.. is there anything more archaic than that?

seriously... I work as a consultant for a professional engineering company. They expect me to type reports in the office then carry them home on a flash drive to send to clients...

I am truly surprised by that! I thought EVERY BUSINESS would be on line by now.

That does sound truly archaic. It can't be that difficult to get online I would have thought?

  3. At my desk, working from home... or should I put a movie on instead?

sigh.. I watched 'The War Boys'....

  4. After years of inadvertantly donating bookmarks to the library when I returned books (including souvenir Olympic bookmarks, hand made cross stitch ones, and a nifty magnetic set), now, I simply memorise the pages numbers each time I take a break.
  5. Didnt everyone read Narnia as a child? I though it was mandatory... Anways, you should avoid anything thats been made into tv or movie (like LOTR, Narnia, Harry Potter, Sword of Truth or Song of Ice and Fire) because film fantasy to me is really fake and cheesy. I recomeded Robin Hobb's Farseer series, starting with Assasins Aprentice. It is not too heavy or daunting, like Tolkien or TH White. j
  6. I also loved that book, I read it a few years ago. Loved the intertwinning stories. But something about it made me want to read it with no one else around.. maybe cuz I cried at the end... j
  7. Looking for historical fiction (ala Michener or Rutherford) set in Liverpool. I am likely moving there in the fall, and want some background on the geography or history of the town/region. j
  8. Love the Outlander Series, but it went a bit downhill after book 2. Oh well, I am comitted to finishing the series. I found them on the book shelf at a friends summer cabin. Recently, I found the Lord John series, which I love! still a few loose ends in that one, and I am happily waiting for Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner to complete the set. Anyways, just for fun, I was checking out youtube videos people make of thier dream Outlander cast for movie or tv. if you like the books, check out peoples videos, and post comments on their casting choices!
  9. Bryce Courtenay I started with April Fools Day, which was pretty bad, but The Power of One came highly recomended, and has since become one of my fave books. Then I tried Whitehorn which is essentially the former, but with a different character name. I have never read 2 books more similar by the same author! Now I'm affriad to read anymore Bryce Courtenay, even the sequel to Power of One, if they all stick to this formula. Should have stopped at One I guess
  10. Angela's Ashes. It was a gift from someone who previously lent me Trinity, which we both really loved. don't' know why I can't get into it though...
  11. I liked London, but I thought it was a bit forced. Sometimes the on-going connections between generations werent really necessary. I bought it at a jumble sale, where I had forgotten that I had read his stuff before -Russka which I didnt like at all. I think he's sort of a poor copy of James Michener, who does the multi-generation thig the best (Try the Covenant, about South africa, or the Source, about Israel, or Centennial, about Colorado USA) and you can see the genre done better, I think. But I will likely try New York from the library, becuase I do like that city. But I will have moderatly low expectations..
  12. Hi, I'm jjzazzy from Vancouver (Canada) I like really long books, and series, becuase I read really fast. I read historical fiction and fantasy, mostly. My local public library is really great, you can request a long list of books (and movies) from all over the place, and they bring them in for free, so you can always have one waiting when you go to return the last one. My ultimate fave books are (in no particular order) Power of One Gone with the Wind Song of Ice and Fire series Farseer triolgy Outlander series Pastoral Symphony Pillars of the Earth and anything by James A Michener or Wilbur Smith I am always looking for recommendations! ttyl jjzazzy
  13. I really liked this book, along with "World Without us" Alan Wiesman. Niether is really fiction though.... A recomended read for envrionmental types... jjzazzy
  14. I think we need a topic to complain about the LONG wait between books 4 and 5 in the George RR Martins Song of ice and Fire series. It is so far the best, most complex, interesting series I have ever read. They keep killing off the main characters. Book one, A Game of Thrones, soon to be released as an HBO mini series. And yet, we have been waiting years since book 4 was released... continuing to wonder how it will end... anyone else? jjzazzy
  15. I read Wizard's First Rule, and hated it. it was recomended by the lady in the bookstore as popular sci-fi fantasy. it is over simplistic, no sub-plots. I might have liked it when I was 10. now I refuse to read anything else by him. ever.
  16. Definatly my favorite series, worth a re-read every year. The assasin triolgy I mean. I agree with whoever said Fitz and Nighteyes are the best characters.... I also like Soldier Son, and am looking forward to Dragon Keeper. BUT I refuse to start until they are all published, becuase I got stuck like that with the Tawny Man books, waiting every year to find out what happens! arghh so frustrating....
  17. I just finish Gabaldons Lord John books and am really looking for: historical fiction Europe, 17-18th century, gay men books. Yes I've already read all the Andre Gide, but I'm looking fo something, longer and more direct. any recommendations? jj
  18. Hi After posting a similar question in another forum, someone recommeded to me : Gemma Doyle series, by Libba Bray. Also, the Mortal Insturments (as mentioned) was really awesome too. j
  19. I liked: Bewitching season - Marissa Doyle but its young adult fiction, as well as a bit supernatural. not sure its thats your thing...
