Welcome to my 2019 book list!!
Hopefully it will be kept more up to date than my 2018 list (which I started halfway through the year, and only ran to 2 pages ).
My format is going to stay the same as previous years. For some reason, I've always categorised books by the year they were purchased....which means I am really cringing when I see how many books I purchased 5+ years ago but have yet to read.
My aim is to reduce my TBR pile, but unfortunately it just seems to be growing year on year. Oh well, there are worse problems to have so I'm not too bothered by it.
I haven't listed my treebooks (I didn't list them in 2018 either), mostly because I had a massive cull in early 2018 and I just don't have the energy to go through my bookcase and list them all. I will hopefully read some of them this year, but I expect most of my reading with be done on my Kindle.
Anyway, enough rambling from me. I hope everyone has a great reading year in 2019 and I look forward to reading everyone's posts in the coming year.

I hope you enjoy this one ! I love this trilogy. I'm planning to re-read the third book next year (2019).
I started it yesterday, and it's good so far. There is a fair amount of techie-speak and new concepts but I'm managing to keep up with it.

I've just had a homemade cheeseburger for lunch. Not the healthiest of meals but so delicious.

I agree, New Year's Eve is an anti climax. I prefer to stay at home, pig out on chocolates and have a couple of glasses of bubbly in front of the tv.
This sums up how we prefer to spend New Years. We are lucky if we manage to stay up till midnight though.
-
Ready Player One. Undecided about it...it's as though it was too fast for my brain to keep up.

I think the paperback is closer to 200 pages, but by today's standards it is more of a draft excluder than a doorstop.
It's definitely longer than the 100 pages I mentioned above, even though that's what Amazon says it is. I can remember wondering why it was taking me so long to finish if it was only a hundred pages.
-
I have a few favourites that I re-read. Unfortunately 2 of them (The Stand and IT - both by Stephen King) I have read so often that I'm slightly sick of them.
-
61 so far which is very good going for me. Oh, plus about 9 audiobooks.

The Last Anniversary - Liane Moriarity
The setting is a small island in Sydney called Scribbly Gum Island. Seventy years ago, two of it's inhabitants - Alice and Jack Munro - vanished into thin air leaving their very young baby alone in the house. The kettle was still boiling and there was a marble cake waiting to be eaten when young Connie and Rose Doughty came across the scene. For seventy years they have held tours of Alice and Jack's house, while the baby (now a grandmother called Enigma) was raised as part of their own family.
Now, Connie has recently died and left her house to Sophie, a virtual stranger to the family but someone she felt had a strong connection to her house. Sophie (unlucky in love) moves to the island and befriends the remaining members of the family.
This book was a mixed bag of genres. There was the sappy romantic side, the humourous thread throughout, and bit of a mystery and also a very dark storyline around post-natal depression. I don't know if it hung together in right way for me, and each of those individual stories could have been left out entirely without impacting the rest of the book. Thinking about it now, I can't even see the point of Sophie's story, unless it was to prove that she could 'create her own fairy tale'. Definitely not a patch on Big Little Lies, and if I'd read this one first I wouldn't be in a rush to read Moriarity's other books. Not to say it was bad, it just wasn't all that original - except for a particular reveal at the end).
However the constant references to marble cake has made me print out a recipe which I may attempt during my holiday break.

The Miracle Inspector - Helen Smith
This is a fairly short dystopian novel (250 pages or so). Lucas works for the Ministry as a miracle inspector (any sort of miracle, from Jesus' face on a piece of toast to the healing of the sick). His wife Angela is stuck at home (generally women aren't allowed out of the house, except to see relatives) with nothing to do but dream of a better life. They both have plans to escape London and move to Cornwall in the hopes that things are better there.
I felt this was a fairly weak novel...there just didn't seem to be much meat to it and the concepts weren't very original. There was no backstory as to how society became this way (aside from the allusion that all men are rapists and paedophiles - hence women and children need to be locked away), and very little about current society (except through the eyes of Lucas and Angela). There just wasn't any depth, and it has been done before by much better authors. Many parallels with 1984 and the ending felt like it was lifted straight out of Brazil.

I'm still reading I Contain Multitudes by Ed Yong. I keep putting it aside for fiction. I've finished The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarity (good but not great), The Miracle Inspector by Helen Smith, and I'm now reading Dog On It by Spencer Quinn (told through the eyes of a dog which is always fun ).
I'm also listening to The Woman In White by Wilkie Collins. I have about 6 hours to go, but I'm struggling to find the time to listen to it other than during my long drives to work (I have a week off). Twice over the last couple of days, I settled on the sofa to listen, and both times I was asleep within 10 minutes.
I also fancy reading some Peter F Hamilton, so once I finish up with my current reads I may get under way with The Reality Dysfunction. I might also buy it on audible so I can switch between the two.
