  1. I enjoyed this as an honest portrayal of young love, but it wasn't amazing. I think I got it because of a review that really sang its praises and it didn't really live up to it.
  2. I love love love the book, and I also love the film. I find it really funny how Welsh the book is (for want of better phrasing) and how the filmmakers didn't (for obvious reasons) understand this and therefore it is not translated into the film at all. They're both brilliant pieces of work in such different ways, which is quite fascinating.
  3. The Moomins have made such a hipster comeback recently, which is a good thing. They're so wonderful. Moomins at 20 is completely fine. I'm 20
  4. Disney's Hercules. Recently had an operation and had to rest because of the anaesthetic. Cue the watching of many kids films. Also had a Lord of the Rings marathon which was absolutely brilliant. It's so quotable!
  5. So David Crystal is pretty much my hero (or one of them). I study linguistics and am absolutely fascinated by language and David Crystal has made linguistics so accessible and interesting for people who just want to know some stuff about linguistics. A Little Book of Language and Words Words Words are brilliant, well-written but not overly academic and full of jargon. His Encyclopedia of the English Language is my bible. Michael Rosen recently wrote a Guardian piece in praise of Crystal, and David Crystal wrote a rather interesting response on his blog. Please don't tell me I'm the only crazed David Crystal super-fan out there. If I am, you should all take a look, because he's quite the lad.
  6. Oh man, I really want to read the Maze Runner now. I loved the Hunger Games series. The end was so sad though, but in good way, because it showed such a realistic portrayal. Katniss and Peeta were so young to go through what they went through and I think the ending that many authors would have chosen would really not be a believable idea of how everything that they suffered would mess them up so much. It was very honest.
  7. A Prayer for Owen Meany is amazing. It's such an extraordinary concept, written in the most believable way. I also really enjoyed Hotel New Hampshire. I really like John Irving. I've asked for Last Night In Twisted River for Christmas!
  8. I wouldn't really say I have a favourite genre. I'll read most anything really. I'm not overly fond of crime and horror stuff but I would still read something of those genres if it was recommended. By the way, I love your quote for the week. Say Anything is one of my favourite films.
  9. Hello, I'm quite excited about joining a new forum. I'm a student in my 3rd year at Edinburgh University but have taken some time off, and I remembered how being on a book forum when I was younger was quite a comfort in difficult times, so thought I'd join a one again. I love to read, obviously, and write. I study French and English Language and I love language in all its forms. The linguist David Crystal is a bit of a hero. I don't have a favourite book because there are too many, but right now I'm reading Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake (part of the Gormenghast trilogy). I can't wait to get stuck into some exciting literary debate!
