  1. I am reading Possession by A.S. Byatt. It had a slow start, but now I am finding it a very interesting read. Has anyone else read this? Is it as good as I think it's going to be?
  2. Thanks for the comment on my kitty. Yours must be cute too, then. :)

  3. My suggestion would be A Prayer For Owen Meany or The World According to Garp. You can't go wrong with either one. I wouldn't suggest The Cider House Rules. I know it is considered one of his better novels, but this is one by Irving I couldn't even finish. It was overly descriptive and lacked sympathetic characters.
  4. I'm alive...I tell you...ALIVE!

Nice to see you back again

  5. Hi, Abby. I'm not doing great. I think I made a big mistake leaving my job. :( I haven't been around because I have barely been reading.

  6. For Erik My parents gave me food and shelter, But you taught me how to sustain myself. My parents gave me many gifts, But you taught me how to never give up. My parents gave me life, But you taught me how to breathe it in. LOL at Raven's That was priceless.
  7. I was reading David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, but I am putting it aside to read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson since we will be discussing it in September.
  8. Nothing has been on my mind lately.

I thought you'd run away screaming after listening to Opeth, lol.

LOL No, no, that only happens when I hear Barry Manilow singing. ;)

Only Barry Manilow? You obviously have higher tolerance levels than I do, lol!

  9. "I was looking for a quiet place to die." - The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster "Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul." Lolita by Vladimir Nabakov "It was a pleasure to burn." Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
  10. Hmmm, difficult to choose. 1. Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird) 2. Aramis (The Three Musketeers) 3. Philip Carey (Of Human Bondage) 4. Rhett Butler (Gone With The Wind) 5. The Fool (The Farseer Series) I had to change my list. I almost forgot Aramis!
  11. Thanks! I will definitely give them a listen when I have a chance.

    Hello,

    Welcome.
  13. Oh where, oh where has my reading mojo gone. Oh where, oh where can she be?

She'll be BACK, Pixie - and you'll luv reading even more when she does! It happens to me, sometimes, too.

She better not be at Waterstones. I can't afford that! LOL

I hope so, Booknutt. I miss her terribly. :(

  14. Ender's Game is an excellent book. If you enjoy it, Speaker For The Dead is just as good, if not better, in my opinion. I think the other books in the Ender's series go downhill from there, though. I would love to hear your thoughts.
  15. While Anathem by Neal Stephenson is interesting to a degree, it's not grabbing me at the moment. This is a book that requires my full concentration, and I can't give that right now. Think I will put it down and read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.
  16. Here are few I love from Tom Robbins: The afternoon passed more slowly than a walnut-sized kidney stone. Politics is for people who have a passion for changing life but lack a passion for living it. There is no such thing as a weird human being. It's just that some people require more understanding than others. Philosophers have argued for centuries about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, but materialists have always known it depends on whether they are jitterbugging or dancing cheek to cheek.
  17. I'm tired of the heat. :(

  18. Mellotron Scratch from my favorite CD Deadwing by my favorite band Porcupine Tree
  19. That's not sad. That's awesome! I have been a fan since I was a teenager, and I have never seen them live. Now THAT's sad. lol I'm curious. Since we are both fans of Rush and PT, do you think I would like Opeth? I have heard OF them, but never heard any of their music.

  20. I like this thread. Authors I can think of who have never disappointed me are: Paul Auster (so far) Ray Bradbury John Crowley (so far) Charles Dickens (so far) Fyodor Doestevsky (so far) Mark Helprin Robin Hobb (so far) Patricia McKillip Vladimir Nabakov (so far) Tad Williams The ones with the "so far" next to them are authors I have read quite a few of, but not most of all of their collection yet. Authors who I used to like, but felt their writing deteriorated or became repetitive are: Charles De Lint Stephen King Dean Koontz J.K. Rowling
  21. Yeah, The Alchemist is just not my type of story. To Kill a Mockingbird is excellent, probably in my top 10 books ever.
  22. I hope you enjoy the show! Have you seen Rush live before? I haven't, but then I get pretty uncomfortable in large, pushy crowds. Maybe Rush fans aren't so bad, though. :)

  23. I am glad you enjoyed it, Brida and also glad you are not offended by my post. I generally don't tell other people not to read a book simply because I didn't like it. I can see why some people would love The Alchemist. It just wasn't for me.
  24. Hi, Karsa. :) I didn't think anyone would recognize the Deadwing cover. Porcupine Tree doesn't seem to be that well-known. Too bad, because they rock! You are a Rush fan, too, eh? You have great taste! ;) I am well, and hope you are well, too.
