  1. Just started With Your Crooked Heart Helen Dunmore, it says on the front cover that it won the orange fiction prize so hopefully it's a good un
  2. Great review Brian, my other half read it but his only comment was it's not bad so not really sure if he liked it or not
  3. Well i gave up on The Court Of The Air Stephen Hunt after only 70 pages. I thought it was going to be a cross between Fingersmith & Oliver Twist but it turned out to be fantasy which you wouldn't have known from reading the back, anyway i didn't like it at all so it's gone to the charity shop & to keep my Mojo on an even keel i re read Rebecca Daphne Du Maurier which i enjoyed just as much as the first time knowing the story didn't take away the pleasure of reading it again & my copy has an authors note & epilogue in the back although i felt that the ending was perfect as it is sometimes it's better to leave things untold. I'm sticking to short easy reads till the new year as Christmas is always such a busy time so i've started With Your Crooked Heart by Helen Dunmore i've only read the first few chapters but so far so good
  4. I remember when i got to that bit thinking, hang on a minute, and then having to go back & read it again i was so not expecting it I finished A Christmas Carol, as it was the middle story in a 4 book volume i hadn't realised it was so short but i enjoyed it very much & will definitely be reading more Dickens next year. My next read is going to be The Court of The Air Stephen Hunt.
  5. I finished Red Lights & Green Lizards by Liz Anderson was disappointed in it as it didn't really live up to my expectations. My next read is going to be a Christmas Carol Charles Dickens.
  6. That's so nice i'm tempted to push this to the top of my TBR pile so that i can write to him as well. I want a hand written letter from Rohinton Mistry
  7. I loved that book too it took me awhile to get into it but then i couldn't put it down I was the same Brian but so many people who read it enjoyed it so i eventually got round to reading it & was glad i did. Hope you enjoy it as well I'm over halfway through Red Lights & Green Lizards & wishing something interesting would happen it's not bad enough to give up on but at this rate i'll be glad when i get to the end I bought a few books at the charity shop yesterday Anansi Boys Neil Gaiman - this will be my first Neil Gaiman book The Loving Spirit Daphne Du Maurier Q Luther Blissett - bought for hubby
  8. Well i ended up sending for A Monster Calls for my teenage daughter for Christmas , i went for the illustrated copy because it doesn't sound like the sort of book we'll be offing to the charity shop when we've finished reading it. Ill be watching to see if it makes her blub & then i'll know if i need to read it from behind a cushion when it's my turn. I'm hoping it'll turn her away from all those vampire stories she seems to like at the moment & just in case it does i've bought The Knife Of Never Letting Go Patrick Ness & A Swift Pure Cry by Siobhan Dowd
  9. (Ewan lives on the IoM and it shows) That made me laugh, not sure what you meant by it so you'll have to spell it out for me. I don't come from the IOM or know anyone who lives there so don't worry about causing offense
  10. I love Liza Tarbuck & think she's much funnier than her Dad, sorry Jimmy Does it say wether Dawn chose her to narrate it or was it the publisher, Poppy ?
  11. Is he cheeky? My little boy is, i sometimes wonder if i'd called him something like John would he have been more sensible my sister says he's just like William from the Richmal Crompton books Oh definitely you can't name any of your children after the dog it would get very confusing I liked Toby as a name but my OH had a dog called that when he was young so we had to rule it out, i think in the end Charlie was the only name we could agree on
  12. Thanks guys .... I'm going to go with Poppy & Janets suggestion A Christmas Carol, sorry Willoyd, as i think reading a shorter book as Poppy says makes more sense at this busy time of year. I've only ever read Great Expectations & that was at school so i'm hoping i enjoy his books more now i'm a bit older ( quite a bit older) But if i enjoy A Christmas Carol then i shall mark in Oliver Twist for the new year. Hard Times is the only one that i don't know the story to so good job i asked for help otherwise i probably would have opted for that one. Christopher Ecclestone is my favourite doctor as well
  13. I wanted to read some Dickens this year & as we're now hurrying towards December i would appreciate some help in making my choice. So which would you pick out of Oliver Twist A Christmas Carol A Tale of Two Cities Hard Times Nicholas Nickleby
  14. Oh yes i vaguely remember him from Dr Who, it seems like such a long time ago that Christopher Ecclestone was the Doctor. Good choice though
  15. Glad you survived the hurricane Erin must say it looks very cosy reading by candlelight although i would have to get out my reading glasses to see the pages The Steig Larsson books are great aren't they everyone i know who's read them has enjoyed them perfect for pepping up your mojo.
  16. Goodnight Mr Tom made me cry as well Janet. Seeing other people crying often makes me well up in sympathy but i don't like to cry in front of anyone else so if i read A Monster Calls i'd have to save it till i was on my own
  17. Hi Beth, Welcome to the forum good to see a fellow yorkshire woman on the board , my youngest son is called Charlie I look forward to reading your reviews
  18. I'm keeping Moon Over Soho till the madness of Christmas is over & i can properly enjoy it I agree they would make great TV but i can't imagine who would play Peter have you anyone in mind ? I think you should definitely get it for your mum for Christmas Chaliepud then you can borrow it off her when she's finished. I usually save books i've liked for my sister but i know she wouldn't like the magical side to the story so i've passed it on to my eldest DD instead It's such a good read VF
  19. I loved Rivers of London but unfortunately i didn't think much of Catalina i'm afraid Kylie I never really got into the story & kept finding myself having to re read chunks as i wasn't concentrating on it but it's the first of his books that i haven't enjoyed so maybe it's just down to personal taste & hopefully you'll enjoy it more than me I've just started a book called Red Lights & Green Lizards by Liz Anderson it's set in Cambodia which is where my nephew is now living so it has a special interest for me.
  20. Not going to attempt a review of Rivers Of London by Ben Aaronovitch as better reviewers than me have already said their bit so just going to add my thoughts. I really enjoyed this book i loved the idea of there being a kind of magical underworld existing alongside real life & my favourite character was Peter i thought it would be so exciting to find out you had latent magical powers & be co-opted into a special magical division of the police force thinking your life was going to be very ordinary & suddenly finding this whole new world that you never new existed. I know Poppy you didn't think it was like Jasper Fforde but it did make me think of him but whereas The Eyre Affair didn't really grab me i just loved the humor & imagination in this story & i'm really looking forward to reading the next book.
  21. I stayed up late to finish Rivers Of London last night , i really enjoyed it & it's very different from what i normally read so thanks to everyone who recommended it. Luckily i have the next book in the series so i'm sure i'll be starting on that soon. Meanwhile i've gone back to Somerset Maugham & i've just started reading Catalina.
  22. Hi Pixie nice to see you back i was wondering what had happened to you, hope all is well in your world
  23. Well at least it's an even number so no one should be left as gooseberry
  24. Gosh Chaliepud you do seem to be having a stressful time of it at the moment Hope you manage to sort out the car soon & get some time to relax.
  25. I've never read Agnes Grey so i shall look out for that one. I tried reading Shirley & Villlette but couldn't get into either of them but yes i think your right it is nice to have some classics to look forward to
