  1. I finished The Shack a few days ago, my eldest daughter recommended this after she read it but it wasn't my sort of thing, a bit too Zip a dee doo dah for my liking. So now i'm about halfway through Black Narcissus Rumer Godden which is much more my sort of thing. I've also got my book club read to fit in this month which is The 100 year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of A Window...... I already have this so i was pleased with the choice as it means it'll be one more book off the TBR pile. Book buying wise i've only bought a couple of book this week so not doing too bad
  2. I really liked this when i read it. What did you think of it Karen?
  3. Sappy is a good description of Maeve's books Julie. I guess i was okay with sappy when i was younger but unfortunately it doesn't hit the spot anymore Athena i never read Black Beauty as a child but i did watch the TV programme sometimes. I seem to remember her father was quite good looking for an older guy
  4. I like the sound of Anybody Can Be Cool..... but i'm thinking the person who wrote Crafting With Cat Hair has way too much time on their hands
  5. Frankie i think the rock was definitely meant as i sign. I think what you are meant to do is next time you go out take the rock with you when you get where you are going shut your eyes & throw the lucky rock & whoever it hits will be your soulmate for life.
  6. I've read both The Copper Beech & Evening Class & liked them both,i also liked To Light A Penny Candle & Circle Of Friends . Whitethorn Woods was the last thing i read of hers & i didn't enjoy it all, the story was really predictable & a bit twee. I'm not really up on Manga but i know she likes Deathnote & she watches a lot of Studio Gibley stuff as well, Howls Moving Castle & My Neighbour Totoro, are a couple of her favourites
  7. Woohoo!!! Thanks Julie i checked this out on Amazon & the book is a perfect gift for my eldest daughter who graduates this year
  8. My eldest DD didn't get into the book till halfway through & then she couldn't put it down.
  9. Thanks Chesil, i didn't know they'd made a movie of it, i'll have to check it out
  10. I decided to make The Shack my next read as i need to clear some books from my TBR mountain instead of reading library books & books that i intend on keeping
  11. My order form The Bookpeople arrived today 3 books by Rumer Godden for 4.99, a bargain! They are: Breakfast with the Nikolides Kingfishers Catch Fire Black Narcissus Quite a few years ago i saw a programme about her life on the TV & found her quite a fascinating person . She grew up in India, married a man who turned out to be a dead loss & ended up having to support her family by writing. A lot of her books are set in India but she also wrote a childrens book The Diddakoi which was turned into a TV series called Kizzy, i don't know if anyone else remembers this but it it was one of my favourite programmes when i was a child
  12. I like your thinking Let's face it being toilet trained has to be top of the must haves list when it comes to choosing a life long partner Totally agree Cold Feet was a great series With all these recommendations Frankie you'll be too busy to do anything but watch TV for the next few months
  13. I read this last year & really enjoyed it I read quite a few of Maeve Binchy's earlier books & enjoyed them at the time but her later books i couldn't get into i don't know if it was because my reading tastes have changed or her stories just became too predictable. My middle daughter is a big fan of Manga i don't think she's read this one though so i'm sure she'll be interested in your review. Great reviews Athena
  14. Yes i do remember it being funny, Dustin Hoffmann played the lead role
  15. The Handmaids Tale is a great read Devi can't wait to hear what you think of it
  16. Great article made me laugh, although i'm actually quite good at remembering what books i have, i might forget what my children's dates of birth are, what we had for tea the day before & what i came all the way upstairs for but i'm pretty good at remembering what's in my TBR mountain & very rarely buy duplicates
  17. Yes it was, i usually listen to it on iplayer & have another tab open with a link to Amazon so i can add any books that take my fancy to my wishlist, needless to say Barbara Pym went straight on there Pixie - your splurge on the Bookpeople was catching; i got the catalogue through the post & ended up ordering The Mortal Instruments Series for one of my daughters who is a big fan, a snip at 6.99 & for myself i got 3 books by Rumer Godden. I would have got the Cazalet novels as well but they were out of stock
  18. I have the first 2 of your books on my TBR pile Bobbly. I've had Case Histories for ages & managed to avoid watching the recent TV dramatisation as i want to read the book first I have this on my wishlist so look forward to reading your thoughts on it Sofia I finished Shift Hugh Howey this afternoon, after reading & really enjoying Wool i was a bit disappointed in this prequel it definitely wasn't as much of a page turner as the first one. Still it's not put me off reading Dust which comes out later this year. Not sure yet what to read next, i was planning on starting The Shack Wm Paul Young but then my order from the Bookpeople arrived with 3 books by Rumer Godden so now i'm torn
  19. I think i'd go with Dogs Of Courage Devi as it sounds like a light read, Blood Brothers sounds really interesting but might be difficult to concentrate on while your on holiday & as it says The Blue Door is a" heart breaking memoir " i don't think i'd go with that for a holiday read
  20. I was only listening to a book programme on the radio & they were talking about Barbara Pym's novels; i've not read any myself so look forward to hearing what you think of them
  21. I like your thinking Julie, i've only heard of Thomas Berger off your list though - not read the book but loved the movie
  22. Being upfront is a good thing it would've been much worse if he'd done the cowardly thing & just tried to avoid you. Sounds like he'd make a good friend rather than a boyfriend Please don't give up on love just yet Frankie i'm sure there is someone out there who feels the same as you about the friendship first thing & all you need is for the gods to engineer a meeting between the two of you Okay i can see the advantages of a dog but with a man you don't have to pick up his poop when you go out for walks together
  23. Still reading Shift Hugh Howey i'm nearing the halfway mark but finding it hard now to find time to fit in the reading with all the children at home for the holidays
  24. Those bookpeople offers are very tempting aren't they
  25. Scenes from Village Life has gone on the wishlist I think i've read nearly all Dahl's books to my youngest daughter & the BFG was one of my favourites. How lovely it must have been to have him as your grandad
