  1. Just wanted to chime in on Possession . I read it back when it came out so many years ago,and it is, in my opinion, very wordy and hard to get into in the beginning. I'd also describe the sriting as DRY,although once you get started on it and more into the story, you get used to the wording and the dryness, and it really is a really good book.

Just an adjustment ,I think .

It'd kinda be like reading Tom Sawyer, then reading War & Peace .You gotta totally change gears and go in another direction .

Looks like I thought some of it was a bit dry, too! Found my review:

"Two contemporary academics discover a mystery involving two Victorian poets, and this book unravels the mystery by intertwining the present-day stories with those from the past. The writing is beautiful and brings both past and present to life, and I became more and more involved in the book as it went on, until I reached the ending in tears. As I had expected this book to be a bit dry, that came as something of a surprise to me!

The book includes the correspondence between the two Victorian poets, as well as their (sometimes very long) poems, and I can applaud the writer's skill in bringing such true voices to her characters. However, to me, I actually found these hard going to read and would have enjoyed the book more without them - when I come to reread it, I will just skim over the letters, and probably not read the poems at all.

Overall, though, a lovely book and a greatly enjoyable read. "

  2. Thanks, that is encouraging! The thing with Possession that intimidates me is that I once read a few pages of it and it was very wordy and descriptive and there were a lot of big, fancy words  And I fear it might go over my head... But I'm determined to read it in English. Ooshie, was it you who had bought this particular edition? It's extraordinarily beautiful!

Oh, yes, that is the one I have frankie - I think it is probably the most beautiful book I own! (kindle? pah!)

  3. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on these, the Eco and Faulks titles are on my TBR, the two other titles are on my wishlist. Possession intimidates me to no end, but I so wish to love the novel... which makes me even more fearful of reading it ...

While you are waiting for poppyshake's thoughts, I will just tell you that Possession is one of my favourite books of all time, I absolutely loved it. I also enjoyed The Name of the Rose very much indeed! :)

  4. I'll be interested to hear what you think of The House on the Strand Ooshie as I'm a newcomer to Du Maurier's books and I'm hoping her other books are just as good? :)

The House on the Strand was one of my favourite books in my teens and I read it several times so was a bit wary of reading it again in case it didn't live up to my memories, but I'm enjoying it just as much this time around. It's unusual for du Maurier in that it involves time travel, but I think it's a great book. I read quite a few of hers over the last couple of years and enjoyed them all (some more than others, of course!). I am looking forward to reading Rebecca, as I thought I had read it, but actually think I have just seen the film many times! I will look forward to hearing which of her books you choose next time. :)

  5. Meanwhile, I had a wonderful book-y surprise today!

What a lovely story, bree! I am reading I Capture The Castle just now; I am really enjoying it but find I can only read a few pages or so (probably up to about 20) at a time. I think it is a book that will stay with me for a while, though, just for the pictures it creates in my mind. :)

  6. Had to laugh at the US Government's response to the petition raised for the construction of a Death Star:

"The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

    • The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
    • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
    • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?"

    Love it! :D

  7. Ooshie

50 books is pretty good for the year ,I'd say . I just made 50 myself, but I've never kept track before,so have no clue what my average number of books a year has been before that .

I do think I used to read much faster than I do now .The old brain is slowing down,so it takes a little more time to prime it I guess. Kinda like an old Model T car, you have to crank it to get it started, then it sputters and stops once in awhile .

You'll do fine this year I bet !

Thanks julie, I know what you mean, I'm sure I used to whiz through books when I was younger. And I quite often (in fact, usually) had 3 or 4 books on the go at once, whereas now I don't think I am ever reading more than 2 at once. Thank you for adding me as a friend, too! :friends3:

    Hello Ooshie :)

Just popping in to wish you a wonderful reading year.

(I remember it was your blog last year that encouraged me to start my own)

Will be dropping in regularly to read your reviews :)

Thanks very much, bree! And thank you for reminding me that it was my blog that helped you start your own, that has cheered me up no end  I hope you have a great reading year too.

    I'm sure you'll do better :yes::friends3:

And well done Ooshie for inspiring bree to start her own reading log! :D:friends3:

I'm full of good intentions anyway! Not just to keep up to date with my (astonishingly short) reviews, but to join in more - I really miss it when I don't, but when I was stressed in the second half of the year for some reason I hardly ever posted, although I usually looked in on the forum every day. :)

Happy Reading Oosh! :) Hope you have a great year.

Have a good reading year Ooshie. Liked your reviews so far.

Thanks very much poppyshake and vodkafan, I hope you have a really good year too! I have tried to add a hug for you both, but apparently I have used too many emoticons and am banned from using any more! xx

  8. Also, did any of you find Mr. Ross an enigma?

Why do you think he suddenly withdrew from his wife and grew distant from her over the years?

    Weird!

Yes, I very much found him an enigma. Do I remember rightly that in the book the earliest mention of him was driving Mrs Ross away from the asylum? But how did he meet her? And why did he become so distant from her when he obviously had deep feelings for her, or he wouldn't have been so happy to find out that she was alright?

I am beginning to think that Stef Penney needs to write a whole series of prequels to give us even a hope of properly understanding her book! :D

  9. And! Imagine a situation where you don't have to turn the page and adjust your book holding hand accordingly. You can just tap on the screen and it'll turn the page for you.

Oooh, that is so appealing! As I get more and more sleepy, I slide down further into the bed with my book holding hand kind of propped on pillows and trying to manage one-handed - it never works... frankie, you, you enabler you! :friends3:

  10. The kobo is very cool and I have truly surprised myself with how much I like it, it is so comfortable to read with, particularly in bed at night..

This I can imagine. I've read a few long novels recently and they were quite heavy on my wrists in bed!

That's interesting. I have been strongly resisting the lure of the e-reader (my books weep real tears when they realise I am considering it :o ) but I am trying to choose a paperback just now and I have ruled out quite a few that I would actually like to read on the "too heavy for when I'm falling asleep" basis. :)
