Have read just under 100 pages of Hyperion. I normally abhor the kind of sci-fi that seem to make up words for planets and character names willy nilly, which on first glance is what I thought this was going to be. But I am really enjoying this so far, sci-fi with a human angle. Looking forward to reading more today, which is a sure sign of a good book.

Is it essential to read this series in order? I've just picked up Sovereign not realising that its the third book!

I'm reading IT again, first time in a few years, I stayed up until about 2am this morning reading it, i'm quite suprised so far how different it is to how I remember it, I dont think I fully took it in and appreciated it on my first read.
I gave up on The Book Thief a quarter of the way in. Not my thing at all.
-
Just put this on hold at my library, going to be my next read all the reviews i've read have been glowing and describe it as a mix between horror and sci-fi.

Well since last posting on this thread I have definitely lost a few pounds, not even close to what I need to though.
I wanted to join a gym last week and was really looking forward to getting into a routine going after work. They wouldnt let me join without GP permission due to high blood pressure
So I went to my GP and the Nurse there said she would refer me onto the Positive Steps referral scheme, which is basically a 16 week scheme run at the local activa gym where you are supported by an instructor to devise an exercise plan and use the facilities there.
I've been trying to get onto this for about 18 months, 2 different Dr's have said they will refer me (the first a year ago) and I heard nothing. Got a letter today from the Gym, a week after the Nurse referred me and I start on the 27th.
4 months of concentrated exercise, i'm going to be like a marine by Christmas

I'm not a huge reader of this genre but I would imagine people who are, are hugely influenced by the team(s) they follow.
I could list 3 or 4 great books from ex-players of my team that would probably bore you to tears
One I did enjoy reading though from a high profile 'legend' of the game was
Thats the only book in this genre I would recommend for reasons already stated. Though as a Gooner you probably woudnt go near it!
Bit of general advice - stay away from anything David Beckham has ever wrote. I picked up his first and it was like a colouring book.

I'm not the most intellectual person and I am not good at analysing underlying meanings of stories, but for what it's worth I took the whole overall story as being a play on
humans being insects who's lives bare no real significance to higher beings, and we are just play things these beings could just pull the wings off, or burn under a magnifying glass on a hot day on a whim. Its certainly made me think twice about doing anything like that ever again
I guess that is pretty much a given. But it was satisfying enough for me personally.

Just finished Under the dome. Found it a bit of a slog towards the end. I can see the metaphor he was drawing comparisons with and that is the angle that drives the whole story and the ending. An enjoyable story. Not one I would read again though.
-
<<< guy approximately 30 pages from the ending standing right here. Dont spoil it

I've never read any of Stephen King's works, but I picked up "Under the Dome" today for

I reckon it will be an ex housemate - oh please please please let it be Brian Dowling
*prays*
It's going to be a woman I heard. I doubt they'll put him in. He gets on my nerves. Not that him irritating me will have any bearing on their decision

I've just looked on the website, and I love Titan! It looks very cool. But.. Pamela Anderson? Since when is this 'Celeb BB'?!
There have been stories surfacing over the past week saying they are going to put someone like her in, (she was actually named, but I think it will come down to money), to spice it up a little.
-
Pamela Anderson?? I've heard rumours they're planning on getting her and she is interested
I'd love it!!
Ooo I didnt think of that. I'm sure now they will use that robot as cover for her or some other 'cougar' to come in by the end of the week. She obviously isnt inside it the whole time, it just kinda freaked me out seeing this thing move like a human when I thought it was a robot, bit of research shows that its a proffessional dancer inside.
There is an extended show tomorrow, so something is happening
-
Great few days coming up of Big Brother Titan the 'robot' is in the house. Very impressive looking thing
Incase you're wondering there is someone inside, question is...who
-
Shabby's left apparently. Though I missed it...again:motz:

If thats the case, I am a little intrigued now, the glasses are just a pain in the ass!
Is HDTV classed as the norm now? I don't even have that yet.
If you are in the market for a brand new 'main' TV from somewhere like Comet I think you would be hard pressed to buy one that isnt HD ready these days. So yes I think it is the norm, as 3DTV will be. It's just the next thing.
-
How do you not have to wear glasses? I suppose that would make it a lot better, but I'm still not interested
Its all to do with the speed in which the 3d image is shot/displayed I think.
Mitsubishi shows off 3D TV technology: no glasses needed
You can kind of see it working on a stereogram -
-
Both me and my BF have bad eyesight, so never bother with 3D in the cinema, and would never buy a 3D tv unless there was absolutely no other choice. Just imagine having to wear 3D glasses everytime you wanted to watch something, it's ridiculous!
They are already developing 3DTV's that dont require you to wear glasses to watch it.
As I said, it will be the norm in 10 years.

Or, maybe they've just gone in to release the sexual tension that Steve was talking about
They are both still there, debating whether to walk. I think they will both be gone by the end of the day.
There has been a huge fight apparently, which I missed
-
3DTV is just a progression of the technology. The last was HDTV. Within the next 10 years everyone will have it, it will be the norm and the majority of shows/movies/sporting events will utilise it.

Chaoime and SHabby went into the diary room and havent come out. Rumours that they've both walked out

I finished Shining, but I heard that the movie isn't as good as the book (it wouldn't be difficult though, what a fantastic read!), so should I see it now or will I think for two hours "oh my God that is terribly bad"?
The movie The Shining is one of the best if not the best 'adaptations' ever made, it is genuinely creepy. But as everyone else has said it is Kubrick's take on the tale rather than a true adaptation of the King novel.
I would argue that its actually better than the book, but i'd probably get hammered for it

I've now got the four available Shardlake books and have the 5th on order. I'm halfway through the first and I love it, the writing style flows perfectly and it does a great job of placing you right in the middle of a medieval murder mystery.
It's edging towards being one of the best I have ever read in any genre.
