I probably haven't read enough YA to notice, or that ones that attracted me didn't have any love triangle in them.

Should YA books include swearing, sex etc?
vodkafan replied to Michelle's topic in YA Month (Archived)
I think Sean made a very good point. When I was young I read lots of "older" books that I probably wasn't supposed to. I just used to read whatever I came across in the house that my dad had got from the library. Mostly crime and spy novels, SF and Westerns. But I think that because they were written for adults, if there was any sex or violence in them it shaped my brain and made me think about those things more in an adult way. I would often find stuff that I did not understand until much later, not always sex stuff but often about relationships and feelings. I just stored those things away in my head. I don't think that reading them too early did me any harm at all; in fact if a child does not stretch his/her brain to take in things they do not understand they will not progress. Also, lets be honest, sex and relationships are things that preoccupy a teens mind to a large extent. Better they can learn about plausible situations (and consequences) in a book or two than have to have a hard lesson in real life. But sex and violence for its own sake though, or held up as a lifestyle example , that's just rubbish anyway. There has always been junk writing . It's even OK to ingest and enjoy a certain amount of junk as long as you know it is junk. But if all you read or watch is junk then that's obviously not good. -
Good for you Kreader! The combination of walking and yoga should yield good results fairly soon.

Welcome Marie! Er...does Andrea Levy count? She is English but born to Jamaican parents who came on the Empire Windrush....Small Island was the the best book I have read so far this year. Oh just remembered Arundhati Roy. God of Small Things. Brilliant.

I am currently reading the Demon Princes novels again by Jack Vance. Haven't read these since I was a kid. They are classic Vance and much better than the lacklustre Durdane trilogy. Thanks to having plenty to read I have not been tempted into browsing or buying from charity shops.

Hi Kylie your posts are a total hoot! I didn't know you had a new BF..that was so funny about him buying so many books. Good haul..there is only one I am very jealous of though it is the Mary Wollstonecraft book she was so far ahead of her time..I must get hold of that one.

It all depends on how the mustache goes. For instance , you might well grow a "Stalin" or a "Dennis Hopper" or a "Chaplin"

That will be a good test then as you will have time to incorporate the new forefoot training. If you do dress up what would you fancy? I would have to be Darcy.

Newbie....Time Travel Book Suggestions?
vodkafan replied to pd7333's topic in Book Search and Reading Recommendations
Hi pd. Up The Line by Robert Siverberg is a classic time travel book. Another is Beyond The Barrier by Damon Knight. edit: Just remembered Millenium by John Varley . Book is brilliant, film was awful. -
Interesting questions!! I will have to think about it awhile...hmm we have no thoughtful smiley

That really makes sense Brian about putting a brake on when the heel strikes first. I also see people sometimes trudging along, taking very small steps slapping the whole foot down flat. These are the sort of unfit have a go joggers. I applaud them for wanting to get fit but it makes me wince when I see them as I feel they must be hurting themselves incrementally. I had a great weights session today and this has started feeding back into the walking; because the leg muscles have something new to think about the walking is quite effortless I could probably walk double the distance I do now before I felt it! Desperately need some new trainers though might try to buy them next week. The compression gear is on hold although I want that too.

Hi gardengirl I just sent you a pm to discuss the book further...

That's something I might have to look into. I don't really know what my running gait is any more- it's been a few years since I have ran regularly- I DO know that I really really dislike jogging, or "running" at walking speed. I find it really jarring and it just feels wrong, that's why I don't do it. If I am not strong or fit enough to pick up my legs and run properly I would rather swim or do excercises until I feel fit enough to run. That's really how I have felt for the last couple of years, my body just hasn't felt right for running.

Dream Science 3/6 Thomas Palmer This book was recommended to me by gardengirl. I like stories that turn things up on their head and make you look at the world in a different way; in other words, a bit surreal. This story certainly scores high on the strangeness factor. I liked the first half of the book much better, when you don't understand what is happening. But as the book went on I had to decide if I accepted the author's view of what was happening or not. And sadly it didn't quite hang together for me, because I could not figure out the "rules" or parameters of the new existence- the author seemed to add something new in every now and then which explained nothing. Add to this was the fact that Rocker was different to everybody else and the reason for this difference was never explained. Finally I can't decide about the ending- did Rocker do a good thing or a completely selfish thing ? Still, this book was worth a read so thanks to gardengirl for bringing it to my attention.

I remember seeing It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World just once as a kid. Did you know it has been remade as Rat Race with Whoopie Goldberg, John Cleese and Cuba Gooding Junior among others? It's pretty funny.

Hi Brian, I have a question! How do you find your natural running style? Isn't that bad to try to force yourself to run in a particular way or can it help a lot?
