  1. Can I ask what has got you chasing these type of novels deb? Is it something you found you liked and just wanted more of? Why 19th century in particular?
  2. Glad that you liked it! I have always loved footnotes and find they add to a story rather than detract from it. Childermas was my favourite character too.
  3. Miserere sounds interesting, very different. Will look out for that one thanks..
  4. I love The Dragon Masters! It's a quick one day read but quite exciting . Be interested to know what you think of it.
  5. Good luck deb, let us know what you turn up.
  6. Willoyd is right, but I voted my choices in the lists anyway just for fun....
  7. I can't get interested in it from the trailers the '70s clothes are a total turn off. I might watch the slavery film though I like the actor.
  8. The Heat. I thought I would not like this but it was in in fact very funny. Sandra Bullock seems to be having a bit of a box office revival and Meilissa Mcarthy is one of a kind. Although Bullock puts in much the same sort of performance as in her Miss Congeniality films the pairing of the two works well. It is pleasant no brainer entertainment.
  9. I would be interested in that myself. I don't know although I suspect faster communication in real life like the telegraph had made that form unpopular.
  10. I watched a film called Cracks, which I didn't like, and Push, one of my favourites, and half an hour of Solaris (the George Clooney version, not the Rusiian original
  11. I have started it , about 80 pages in....I think for American readers a lot of the appeal is going to be a nostalgia trip, the lost 50s-60s way of life.. he mentions a lot of products that mean nothing to me so it is hard to get into on that account...I can't get excited about Kennedy but I can understand that a lot of Americans think his assassination was a pivotal moment...I am more interested in the time travel elements..to my disappointment the time travel device is just a portal in a fridge, like a wardrobe into Narnia it is not explained..no points there.
  12. Small Son got himself a second hand game with his Christmas money for his 360, it is called Rage and he is very chuffed with it as he got it for £3.99 . It plays very similar to Far Cry but much more interesting.
  13. Exactly so. But not on American TV apparently, it seems to be an unforgivable sin.
  14. Tom-All-Alone's 4/5 Lynn Shepherd I enjoyed this, it was a light quick read. I especially enjoyed all the references to streets and places in London. I did think that some of the events that were intended to be coincidental were a little contrived. Also not a huge amount of character development in some of the characters, especially the female characters. For these two reasons I could not give it a 5/5. But then afterwards I read the author's note about creating the story in between the Victorian novels of Bleak House and Woman In White with some of the same characters, which I thought was rather clever, so easily worth a 4/5. I wonder what the reason for putting Molly in the story? She played no part in the plot. I can only imagine that her character meant something to the author and she wanted her in there for her own reasons.
  15. I didn't know that Jack Vance's Demon Princes series was the same plot as The Count of Monti Christo.... now I don't need to read it, having enjoyed Jack's version..
  16. Hi Noll! Your member's thread is probably still here like an old bedroom....sorry nobody has been in to clean it ..
  17. I finished the book I was on while at work (Letters To Alice) and had nothing else so had to start reading the Stephen King 11/22/63..This might take me a long time as it is too heavy to walk home with....will only read it at work.
  18. Letters To Alice On First Reading Jane Austen 4/5 Fay Weldon I enjoyed this for lots of reasons, and was debating whether to score it a 3/5, but then decided to elevate it to a 4/5 for the way it made me feel about writing. Lots of useful pointers , not so much about the execution but the way it should make you feel and traps to avoid.
  19. Arise Sir Michael Caine 2/5 William Hill One of my favourite actors, and an interesting life story but a pretty run of the mill and slightly sycophantic biography. I enjoyed the descriptions and anecdotes of being on set on the films best.
  20. @ Frankie: thanks for the heads up on Augusten Burroughs. I have made a note and will look out for those other books
  21. Welcome back Stephanie. Kindle fan here too!
