  1. As this is a forum dedicated to books, books, books, I was thinking that some of you might review books for a living. My boyfriend and I both read a ton, and he is very interested in pursuing reviewing as a career. I am trying to learn about the job so I may be able to share some wisdom with him.

Some of my questions are as follows:

What is the nature of the job? How difficult is it to get a start in the field? Is it very important to have connections? Would he be able to support himself in this job? Any other miscellaneous advice?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thank you!

  2. I like reading plays, but only when I find characters to identify with or when the subject is especially interesting to me. For example, when I read "A Streetcar Named Desire" I absolutely loved it. The characters all had eerily attractive personalities...sort of like you didn't want to like them, but a part of you did.

I still dislike reading the stage directions, etc., but found if I deliberately REDUCE my reading speed, I am able to keep track of the speakers a little better. Go figure......

I think you are completely right on this point! I am a fairly slow reader, and I think that this helps me to understand the plot better and imagine the script in my mind as if it were on stage...i.e. the rooms all being visible from my perspective, the animated acting, etc. It gets pretty fun!

  3. I read A Christmas Carol every year to get in the festive spirit....

So do I! I also go see the play at the Guthrie Theater here in Minneapolis every year as well, which every year is fantastic...there is no better way to get into the spirit of giving than by reading A Christmas Carol.

  4. I am currently reading the Historian. I am an avid, though slow reader so I am reading it like crazy and am only slightly over half done. Despite this I am so intrigued by the story! I've been steadfastly against the current vampire hype revolving around the sickening Twilight series, yet I find myself fascinated by this story of Vlad Dracula.
