I'm about 1/3 way through the book. I will have to record the programme to watch after I have finished reading!

I loved the Grail Quest series. I had tried the Sharpe books a longtime ago and although I was very interested in that period of history I couldn't get into them. I was hooked by Harlequin from almost the first page. I can recommend Azincourt too.

Hi I've read all Kate Atkinson's JB books and really enjoyed them. I had started with her Behind the Scenes At The Museum which I thought was terrific and so moved on to Case Histories when that came out. I enjoy the way she weaves her different stories of different characters together. I read a review recently that complained about the 'forced' coincidences but just love the way she brings it all together. My favourite I think is One Good Turn.

Despite being really interested in the Napoleonic Wars and also enjoyed the TV series I couldn't get into the Sharpe books at all or the American Civil war series, but I really enjoyed the Harlequin series which had me hooked from page one, and I also enjoyed his sort of follow up to that series 'Azincourt' -
Now finished the book and really enjoyed it. I found I became used to her style very quickly and would highly recommend the book as a very different take on the Henry/Anne Boleyn story.

For a different take on the Henry/Anne Boleyn story, I would highly recommend Hilary Mantel's 'Wolf Hall'. Although it won the Booker Prize I have seen some mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it.

I agree. I started this with some trepidation about the style (present tense, confusing use of he) but so far about 100 pages in I'm really enjoying it. I had been interested in this book since it was first published, but had been put off by the comments about the writing style. Only bought it as it was on offer at Waterstones before Christmas.

I've just finished 'Nemesis' which I loved. Needed to start on my pile of 'Books to be Read' by my bed (Picked up 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel which I am really enjoying much to my surprise) so I am delaying ordering 'The Devil's Star' for the moment, but it wont be long before I do!

You could also try The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. First in series is Over Sea, Under Stone, but you could stasrt at book 2 "The Dark is Rising" which is also a terrific stand-alone story. -
Just re-reading my favourite children's book - "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. Must be read in winter, preferably near Christmas!

I read this book earlier this year having seen it recommended and then at a 3 for 2 offer. Whilst I agree with many of the comments about historical accuracy (but as I'm no expert didn't really detract from my enjoyment) and also about the book's 'modern' feel. having said that, I enjoyed it.

Many thanks. Although I dislike the guy and much of his and his leader (ie Blair's) politics, I think I will try the Alistair Campbell's Diaries to get another view of the New labour government. It will be interesting in a few years time to read an insider's view of the current coalition government.

I have just finished Chris Mullin's 'View from the Foothill' Chris writes about his time through the years of 2000-2005 when he was a back bench Member of Parliament and (very ) junior minister in Tony Blair's New Labour Government. I found it a fascinating book about how government does (or more often) doen't work in the UK. I wonder if anyone else has read it. I am interested to read other politcal diaries - I believe Alan Clarke's diaries from the Thatcher era are very entertaining and interesting but I wonder if they may be a bit dated now.

Hi Ooshie. Weather has been better today. It was cold and grey yesterday (Sunday). I have started one of my new books Chris Mullins 'A View from the Foothills' about his time as a junior minister in the Labour government. It's a real eye opener and a wonder that anything gets done by the government in power.
What are you reading at the moment?

I really liked it. Took a while to get into it but the ending was good. I hadn't read any of Nick Hornby's recent work but I saw this mentioned on the TV Book Club on Channel 4 (in UK) and found it at a discount somewhere. I think you might enjoy it. I loved it. I enjoyed the whole Millenium trilogy. I just sad that there will not be any more.
