  1. If I said anything that made you feel unwelcome, I'm sorry, it wasn't my intention at all - that's why the wink was there, to avoid you thinking I was waggling my finger at you, because I wasn't. Regular members, including myself may I stress, do this kind of thing all the time so I wouldn't worry about it  if you enjoy being here I see no reason why you shouldn't continue to be here, mkay?

  2. Are you?! I never knew that!! I looooooove Data, he's so sweet!
Adorable! I love everything to do with A.I., the philosophical issue of just what constitutes humanity fascinates me so androids like Data make my day. He's precious in the way Pratchett's Death can be - more humane than humans, yet always feeling like he's missing a vital bit of the equation.
  3. That's encouraging Nicola, thank you  I am trying to drink more water, every time I go to the kitchen to cook/wash up/put a clothes wash on I try to have a glass of water but it's a struggle. It doesn't help that I don't like the taste of water, either... does that make me odd?

As for actual weight loss, I must say the Slimfast is working - I've definitely lost weight since I've been on it, although not owning a set of scales makes it difficult to be more precise than that - although it bugs be that I've lost far more cleavage than waistline so far, and to be perfectly honest it was the waistline I was trying to target!

It was meant to be only a temp diet anyway, to stop me gaining even more until I was referred to the gym for some supervised exercise (I've got a bad leg I don't want to mangle even further) however the gym's decided I'm too much of a liability because of my tachicardy so I'll probably stay on the Slimfast until I find a gym that'll have me...

    Onwards, towards that size 12!

  4. Question about water, apologies if it's daft :

My retention is non-existent. If I drink a glass of water I'll be returning it five minutes later, which is why I don't drink when I'm out and about as there's no restrooms handy. I'm meant to be drinking at least 1 litre of water before an exam next week for example, and I'm panicking as I've got no idea whether I'm going to be physically able to hold it in.

Does this mean that the whole 'drink water, it makes you fuller' principle won't work for me because I'm getting rid of it as soon as I drink it?

  5. I've read both and didn't particularly enjoy them however this is pretty much entirely due to my own personal distaste for the dystopian and not in fact a reflection on the quality of the writing, which is really good. I was made the read them and never would have chosen to independently because of their topic; but if the topic interests you then I see no reason you shouldn't like them.

  6. If you've liked Neverwhere I can't see you not liking The Book With the Long Title (aka The Horrific Sufferings of Mind-Reading Monster Hercules Barefoot, His Wonderful Love and His Terrible Hatred); however it's an extremely emotional book - even more so than The Book Thief, IMHO - so I'd advise something cheerful between the two.

  7. Why the rolled eyes, Capture? Either he kids, or he's proving his own statement that he never watches TV or films :friends0:!

I'd love to see the Generation Dead trilogy by Daniel Waters made into a series - teenage zombies trying (and failing) to fit into high school all over again... how great would that be? *starts compiling dream cast*

Also, Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next books - 'nuff said.

  8. I'm about to have some Strawberry Slimfast milkshake for lunch - oh joy. This is the last variety in my experiment; the verdict is as follows:

    - Chocolate: pretty synthetic but edible enough

    - Vanilla: tastes like melted Mr. Whippy ice-cream, which I detest

    - Banana: tastes like the antibiotic I had to take for my appendix when I was little... bleeeh!

    - Strawberry: tastes like bubblegum, which I'm not too fond of

... I think I'll go back to the synthetic chocolate once this tub's finished.

  9. I've just bought the following with my Amazon refund:

    - The Child Thief by Brom (Kell's fault)

    - Eyes Like Stars: Theatre Illuminata 1 (Fi's fault)

    - Birdwing by Rafe Martin (Hans Christian Andersen's fault)

    - A Monster's Notes by Laurie Scheck (Mary Shelley's fault)

Also after a few calculations, I pottered along to Amazon US and ordered/preordered the entire Generation Dead trilogy by Daniel Waters, in hardback with the tacky cheerleader covers (Generation Dead, The Kiss of Life and Passing Strange) which I'm ashamed to say I want rather badly! I think they're shipping them all together which means I'll get them when Passing Strange is released in June, so they should be a nice birthday present!

Off I go to find me some bookends...

  10. May I also suggest, you buy them from amazon.com on the used list. These are a fraction of the costs and are usuallly like new.
... in my experience, no they're not. Even new books from Amazon aren't so new-looking these days, and I've been lied to re: book condition so often by used sellers I now only trust them when I can't avoid it, i.e. if a book's out of print.

I don't mind paying RRP for a book, in fact I'll quite happily pay RRP if it means I can ensure my copy's in good shape. But it seems unjustifiable to me that a book that's 400 pages and one that's less than 100 can be sold to me at the same price.

  11. Wow, that is a huge oversight. :readingtwo: Stu was so very important in John's life! I'm shocked that they would leave him out.
That was my feeling precisely - George only appeared for about two seconds but that didn't bother me too much as he was Paul's friend back then; but to cover the art school period and not even mention, let alone show us Stu just seemed a bit odd.

Just remembered another (and in fact, the main) thing I didn't like - someone'd clearly read too much Freud, the Oedipal overtones in the relationship between John and his mum weren't so much overtones as shouted down a megaphone... :D.

Do let me know what you think of it when you get to see it.
