  1. I can't help but get a 'marketing research' vibe about your post, arewenearlythere - as indeed I do about most of your posts, which tend to be vague prompts for quotable opinions as opposed to genuine discussions about books. This is a question you've already asked before in many ever-so-slightly different guises, so we would be grateful if you could refrain from asking it again.

  2. I read Eva Luna about ten years ago for school and though I'm vague on the details, I remember being utterly enchanted by Allende's writing, so she's definitely an author I'm planning to get to know better. I'd really like to see what she did with Zorro, seeing as I grew up with the classic television series.

  3. if you don't like blood, guts and sexual scenes avoid Ms Brite at all costs.
Blood and guts are absolutely fine, but... darn it, I knew it. Thanks for the warning, Fi :D.

Is it wrong that this has piqued my interest in this book?
Not at all ;) at least one of us gets to enjoy the vampiric funnage - why couldn't I have discovered Mr Brite at 15? I would have loved her then!
  4. Tee-hee :D.

In all seriousness though, one thing which annoys me (even though your cover of Wicked is without a shadow of a doubt much nicer than mine) is that Elphie is always portrayed as quite pretty, just green. I'm sure Maguire goes into some detail about her not being pretty in any conventional meaning of the term (I mean, she's got pointy teeth for goodness' sake!), so it vexes me that publishers feel the need to prettify her to appeal to those who want to identify with a heroine who's pretty, if a bit green. Seriously - when will it be acceptable for a female protagonist to be ugly yet awesome?!

  5. All of Maguire's first edition hardbacks have pretty coloured end-pages, alas both of my Wicked Years 1 & 2 are horrid cartoony ones but I do want the entire series in hardback rather badly :D I am also ogling the B&N leather omnibus of W/SOAW, it has to be admitted.

Yay for Wicked tikkies ;):friends0: you have fun!

  6. No probem :smile2: hope you enjoy them but I shouldn't think that would be a problem, there are a couple of things that vexed me (my Amazon review of GD was 3 stars over 5), but to be honest if I of all nitpicky OCD people could deal with the lack of proper editing it must mean that the story is absolutely amazing - which it is. I mean, I'm the one who abandoned I Am Legend on page 2 because of a slight continuity error; by those standards, any book I have to get to the end of typos or no typos needs be exceptional.

  7. I've never read Baum's book, had only a vague recollection of the film left over from my infancy and I think that if anything, this state of affairs enhanced my appreciation of Wicked - I wasn't comparing it to anything, and so could enjoy it on its own terms. As far as I can tell it's impeccably researched and should make a lot of sense read hot on the heels of Baum's work, so I think both methods can work well Chesil :irked:.

Frankie, I think the problem you may have had is that the novel is only a part of a much grander vision (the Wicked Years series); I read Son of a Witch straight after finishing Wicked and the smallest things in Wicked are expanded in SOAW until you suddenly understand their significance. SOAW doesn't explain everything either, but then that's what A Lion Among Men is for, surely :smile2: I would heartily recommend SOAW, by the way, I loved it even more than its predecessor.

  8. Thanks to our housemates who have decided to hijack the oven five minutes before we tried to hijack the oven :smile2: me and OH will be having Japanese takeout (honey chicken wings, chicken satay skewers, salt & pepper ribs and char sui buns) watered down with beer/cider and followed by B&J Cookie Dough ice-cream... nom nom nom!

  9. Good luck Nienna, let us know how SW works out for you :smile2:!

On the downside, I've been comfort-eating of late, with the consequences you can all imagine :irked: in fact, *goes to nab a packet of crisps from the kitchen*.

On the plus side, I've discovered that wearing shaping undies and hoisiery all day makes you pretty much immune to hunger, even when you eventually take them off :(!
