Noll - it wouldn't be a quill on its own, the way I've envisioned it so far is a combination of a quill + cup of coffee come inkwell + the letters MBC (My Beloved Craft, which is the first poem I ever wrote about the art of writing) on a scroll wrapped around the quill.
Abby - I only want a simple black outline, no colour or shading; I'm having to try and draw it from scratch though because I can't even find a stock picture with the kind of quill I want. I do like your philosophy, sadly though reality will probably see me having to work in at office at least part time for the next couple of year so if I did go for the hand I might have to postpone the entire plan.
Janet - you're welcome. And, oooh, pretty!

I really hate the Predator films so I hope I don't get dragged to see this one too !
-
I shall endeavour not to have to abandon them on public transport then, I should hate to mortify you !

De Lift (as in the 1983 Dutch horror film, not one of the several rubbishy US remakes). Oh, the nightmares that gave me after catching it on 3am television with headphones on and the lights off so as not to be discovered by my parents! 'Take the stairs, take the stairs. For God's sake, take the Stairs!!!'

I never got to see the end of this my high school class was shown the first half by an R.E. teacher who got his course movie recommendations from his children, only to be routinely scandalised by their suggestions. Picture the scene:Yeah I loved American Beauty. I've seen it several times, one of my favourites. Just a great portrayal of life in American suburbia I think.'Girls, I am so sorry.'
'Huh?'
'To be showing you something like this, so inappropriate, I'll stop it immediately.'
'But we like it, we want to know how it ends!'
'You don't have to say that...'
!
Agreed on all counts !May I also add:High Fidelity
Finding Nemo
Sleeping Beauty
Lion King

Solomon Kane looks trashily awesome.

The Young Ones with Cliff Richards & The Shadows. As I told my Dad: decidely better than the films of Elvis, but not as good as those of The Beatles !
-
Janet - I can't offer much advice as I have not had a tat before, but I can offer you an encouraging hug if you'd like that instead ?
Noll - awww, that passage is beautiful. Made me want to read some E.M. Forster NAO!
I need help:lurker: as you may know, I am in the (rather drawn-out) process of designing a quill tattoo to symbolise my writerly vocation. I would rather like to get it done across my right lower arm/wrist/hand for obvious reasons, except:
- I've heard tattoos on hands hurt like witches with bs
- I'm afraid of how it will look when my hand is old and wrinkly
- I wouldn't be able to hide it, i.e. for job interviews
Thoughts? Thank you !

Italian - native
English - native
German - good, if a little out of practice
Spanish - basic
Russian - forgotten most of the little I knew

You won't know for certain unless you apply what have you got to lose?i desperately want to study in england since ever but i'm afraid not to be acceptedIf you apply and get in, marvellous; if you don't get in, at least you gave it your best shot. Besides, consider that for a first UK degree it is expected that you should apply to more than one University, and should you not get into any of those, there is something called Clearing which will basically tell you 'You didn't get into courses X an Y but there's places on courses W and Z which will take you with the grades you have.' This to give everyone the best shot at an education to suit their needs.
I don't know what your proposed course of study is but, two degrees later with hopefully a third ahead of me, I for one am glad I didn't settle for the way literature is taught in Italy (brainless parrot-style)...!

Thanks for putting my mind a bit more at rest, Fi - I got very worried for a second there.
-
I've been uhming and ahming whether to get these for a while now (as I love Wilde but loathe crime fiction), you'll be happy to know you've made my mind up for me, and in the positive too!

Glad you liked Neverwhere Joker, it's one of my favourites a very different book which had a very similar effect on me was Gregory Maguire's Wicked, an alternative look at the Wizard of Oz universe from the "baddie"'s point of view which I would unreservedly recommend to anyone.

As far as I know, the inspiration for Eleanor Rigby was simply a gravestone in Liverpool bearing that name do you remember where you heard about the connection Ethan?, I'm intrigued now!I think Robinson was a major influence on such Beatles songs as Eleanor Rigby and A Day in the Life, and some early Kinks songs. -
*is scared* I am currently reading de Lint's The Blue Girl and loving it, I hope I don't lose interest too as I have Dreams Underfoot and Spirits in the Wires on Mount TBR!
-
Oooh, sounds Neverwhereish - and as Neverwhere is one of my favourite books, I think I'll start with that thank you!

Prissy Princess of Preservation that I am, I would never throw any component of a book away; I find DJ's annoying though so I take them off while reading and put them back on prior to storage. Carefully removed DJs will still manage to acquire creases even when lying on top of other books as soon as your back is turned however, which vexes me greatly.
What I don't understand is why they don't just all print covers straight onto the hardback, it looks so prettiful and doesn't get tatty! I tell a lie, I know exactly why they don't, it's because printed card covers cost more than plain cloth ones. But stil...!

If I'm lucky enough to be at my parent's house - I co-own these with my sister; she said I can be the one to buy brand new copies as I'm the one who's fussed about condition - I tend to return to the books of Bianca Pitzorno I adored as a child. In particular: Ascolta il Mio Cuore (Listen to My Heart), about three best friends overcoming the tiranny of an evil teacher, directly contributed to my discovering that like the protagonist I wanted to be a writer when I grew up, and is therefore always invigorating to pick up again when my inner author feels disillusioned; while Extraterrestre alla Pari (Extraterrestrial Au Pair), about a little alien whose sex won't be revealed until he/she is much older because why should boys and girls be brought up any different?, is simply beautiful and inspiring.

... you... you heathen *bursts into inconsolable scholarly tears*!!!2) One book you would want on a desert island:The collected works of Shakespeare. I may actually get around to reading it, but if not I'll have plenty of fire lighters.
-
Oooh do let me know if The Book on Fire is as good as its predecessor!
-
Uh-oh, I've got Dacre's book on my shelf waiting for its turn - what didn't you like about it, Eliza?

I find that it is always advisable to jump back a century or two if one wants to find creepy stories un-marred by needless, in-your-face gore my own personal favourite is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus - simultaneously chilling and beautiful, scary and sad, everybody should read this methinks.
ETA: you're welcome !

We have rules regarding link posting for very good reasons, so please don't try to find ways around them.I had to add space between the url for the pictures because I don't have enough post to post a link -
