  1. How about Dean Koontz? Though you have to be careful, he is said to have written some really, really good horror stories and others not worth mentioning. I have read "The taking" and except for the slightly odd end found it quite good.

Or maybe Bentley Little? "The mailman" actually reminded me a little of King's "Needful things".

Hi Luthien,I bought Odd Thomas last week and its on my TBR shelf, based on the reviews over on amazon it should be a good read.If thats the case I will be getting the next one in the series. Thanks also for those suggestions, will check them out and maybe pop them on my amazon wish list.Forgot to mention needful things is one of my top 3 king novels and I have read them all barring full dark no stars(this too is on my TBR shelf)

  2. Definitely! It's the best in the series IMO although I know others like some of the next ones better ;)

Did you know that Deaver has written the new James Bond movie? Should be brilliant! :)

Thanks for the info Charm,I had heard of the bond novel but not a movie fan really but from what I have heard the bond novels are nothing like the movies anyway so may read one or two in the future. :readingtwo:

  3. Sorry if you've talked about Deaver somewhere before, but have you read anything by him before? I've only read two of his Lincoln Rhyme books, Bone Collecter and the next one in the series, Coffin Dancer. I was fully convinced of Deaver's thriller writing skills when I finished Bone Collector and was really sceptical about reading the next one, I thought to myself, 'how can he top that??'. Then I read Coffin Dancer, and it was AMAZING. I won't say anything more about it, but I wholeheartedly recommend reading that one too! :smile2:

Hi Frankie, bone collector is my first deaver read and I have the next two in the series, coffin dancer and empty chair on the TBR pile...can't wait to read them and then buy the next few in the series, thanks for the input frankie :)

  4. Just started Heart Shaped Box myself. Seems pretty good so far.

Clive Barker's Books of Blood series is definitely worth a look.

Thanks Stephen,I will check that series out, started bone collector last night and I have a feeling I'm gonna love it :readingtwo:

Glad your enjoying heart shaped box,I thought it was brilliant and didnt come across as 'American'unlike stephen kings books if that makes sense?

  5. Finished swan song today and loved it,a really great book and for its size it never dragged at all,I didnt want it to end.Now have the choice of dean koontz odd thomas or American Psycho and I can't make my mind up.Advise me please as I hate flippin coins :D

It just got harder to choose, seen Jeffery Deavers Bone Collector in my TBR pile, choices so many choices :readingtwo:

  6. Not at all.

(You have to paint the edge of every page indiviually though, otherwise the pages stick together).

I might try this,my copy of The Stand complete and uncut edition is showing signs of discoloration.I will start this process tonight and let you all know how it works out, sometime around 2019 :banghead:

  7. I have to admit I'm not entirely sure what subvocalization is .

Even my big dictionary didn't have it in and the online dictionary says 'To articulate or engage in articulation by moving the lips or other speech organs without making audible sounds, as in reading to oneself.' - which doesn't seem to be what some of you are talking about!

So I might do it.. if I knew what it was :giggle:

Its just your internal voice sounding the words out as you read them, some mumble and mover their lips, others like me are silent but you still here your own voice in your head....probably a rubbish description that lol

  8. It's awful isn't it?! I end up taking in sentences literally from all over both visible pages (almost always spoilers, I seem to have an inbuilt radar for them) and nothing makes any sense!

The more replies I see I'm starting to realize that although it makes me a slower reader I'm beginning to appreciate the fact that I do subvocalize :D

  9. Oh great, I thought it was just me! Sub-vocalising (or mumbling when I do it!) is something that I really like to do. As others have said, it slows down the reading and makes the imagination work better. Of course you have to pick and choose when to do this. I tend not to do it in public as you do get some funny looks!

    Ian

Hi Ian,I don't mumble its just a voice in my head narrating as I read the words, not always my own voice either which is weird, then I'm 36yo and a pipe smoker for last ten years so I'm perhaps a little off the beam so to speak :(

  10. A relief is an understatement, very happy now, will finish swan song which is great so far and then onto the lincoln rhymes books which are new for me but very much looking forward to them :)

  11. Sye,read this back in may/june and loved it.Been a king fan for years and read all his books(apart from full dark no stars, came this morning yippee). Under the dome was like being transported back to King's early works in the way it was written. The book though a long one never got draggy for me and I blazed through it.Try it I'm sure your gonna love it :readingtwo:

  12. really? I couldn't like this book....I tried, really I did! But..... :dunno:

    Hi Sophia,

if your into the horror/thriller genre I would suggest you give it another go in the future,I have had this a few times where I can't get into a particular book for whatever reason, move onto something else and found when I try again another time I really get into it :)

  13. You are obviously in the UK, the same as what I am, have not experienced this before, when I order books and it is just one book it arrives with the postman, like one did this morning, if I order more than one book like I did a while ago, it still came by Royal Mail, but with the post van. I also order by free delivery, the book I ordered on Sunday, was sent out yesterday and arrived today, so I feel it is hardly worth paying for delivery on books.

Hi VanessaL,this is usually the same scenario with me and always been very happy with royal mail, this latest order is for 10+ books (one is for my 16 month old daughter,a book and soft toy box set) and also ps3 game for my son.I was surprised when it came up with via HDNL and not royal mail so I had a search round the net and from what I read they are a bit of a disaster when it comes to delivering parcels, over 2000 negative comments about them on amazon alone I believe, anyway I have been given an estimated delivery date of 25/07/11 and I ordered the products on the 17th. There was one item, a wii game for my daughter that was sent from a different supplier but through amazon and that arrived this morning via royal mail having been dispatched yesterday, this is great service, anyway I'm gonna start swan song from my TBR shelf rather than hang on for my jeffrey deaver books,am I showing confidence in HDNL? :D

  14. Hi Chrissy, thanks for the reply,I have not paid for this delivery its on the free super saver delivery but I'm assuming because its a larger order than usual that this courier is being used, all my other smaller orders came free via royal mail without problems
