Now that I've decided to get one, I've already started thinking about what to put in it. I've got lots of ideas buzzing around my head, I just have to see if I can execute them as well as I hope.

The weather forecast is dreadful for the weekend - very wet and windy, so it seems a perfect excuse to stay home and dry with a good book or two.

It's a perfect combination! Especially now they've got their own café's rather than Costa's. The one in my local shop is fantastic, lovely drinks and they use local producers for their sandwiches and cakes, so it feels very individual, like an independent. Smashing.

I've had my eye on Gerald Durrell's books for a while now (someone here recommended them last year, but I can't remember who it was now
), so good to see such a lovely review of My Family & Other Animals.

You're welcome.
I didn't know Barreau had written other books, but I might have a look at The Ingredients of Love just to see what it's like.

I finished reading How to Find Love in a Book Shop by Veronica Henry, and have now picked up Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld.
You've made one Curtis Sittenfeld fan very happy!
I loved it, and I know a Jane Austen megafan who studied her at university who loved it too, so I hope I'm not just being a fan girl about it
I'm about two thirds of the way through Spill, Simmer, Falter, Wither now, but I'm still not sure what to make of it. I'll keep going for now, but I think by the end it'll have turned into a marmite book.

Jacket potato with coleslaw and cheese, plus a salad on the side.

I have The God of Small Things on my Kindle, but haven't read it yet. But now I know you enjoyed it, I'll look forward to it!
-
Hope you enjoy it! Always a bit nervous to recommend directly, but I think it's your sort of book, so fingers crossed

My mum told me to watch this .. she can't always be relied on to know good telly though
Well, I love James so I may not be the best judge, but I'd definitely recommend it!
(Actually, OH likes it too, so it can't be that bad

Good to see this news. I have to say, I think since James Daunt took over running the chain, it's been a better bookshop. The children's and YA sections get a mention too, which is great to see, as Waterstone's are a great advocate for children's books in my opinion. What with that and a fantastic café in my local shop too, I can't deny, this is return to profit is probably down to me! -
Reader, I Married Him Kindle version is on offer at £1.99 (should be £12.99) and since the paperback doesn't come out until April and have been waiting for either that or the Kindle book to come down in price, I couldn't resist! It's a collection of short stories related or inspired by Jane Eyre.

I've seen more news that libraries will be under more risk due to the squeeze on local council budgets again, but at least the Libraries minister has actually stood up for them (to a certain extent) now.
Libraries minister promises to act if councils cannot justify cuts
At least someone is talking about the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act which it seems to me gets overlooked when libraries are closed. Maybe it's just my perception, but we should remember that it's their statutory duty to provide a library service.

You're welcome. Thanks for posting the names, I'll refer back to this thread later in the year and maybe try a couple of these authors at some point.

Hi Putnam. Welcome to the forum
-
Another grey day today, a bit damp this morning, but basically, just a bit meh.
-
Have a great year of reading, Putnam

I've picked up Lily and the Octopus in the book shop a few times, and it's on my wishlist as well, so I'll be interested to see what you think of it.
-
You're right, I can make it whatever I want, so maybe I will have a go. Next time I'm near a stationers, I'll have a look and see if they've got a suitable one.

It's a chinese inspired mushroom and noodle dish for us tonight. I've been trying to eat more foods that I was never exposed to as a child and have struggled with in adulthood, and this one has some chilli in it. I don't like the heat that chilli gives, but I've tried this dish before and it was manageable, so I'm going to give it another go and see if I can get used to the heat.

Well, I think we'll try watching again once Chris Chibnall and the new Doctor take over. I have no objections to it being a woman or a different ethnicity either (or both!), as long as the scripts and stories are better than the ones with Peter Capaldi. I still miss Chris Eccleston, David Tennant and Russell T. Davies.

I meant to pop in and tell you, I read Lockwood & Co: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud last week, and I thought it was one you'd like too. I haven't written my review yet
but it's a YA ghost hunting story, and I thought you might enjoy it.

London Has Fallen. Such tripe, but good fun to watch.
I love films like that - our favourites are San Andreas and White House Down

Yay, I love February!
I have some time off at the end of the month, but have some extra work to do before then, so I'm just focussing on getting through to my holiday!
Today's been a ok day at work, but glad to be home in the warm, and planning to try and do a bit of reading this evening ... but then, I always think that, and I just never seem to find time.

Congratulations on the dry January! I know that's usually used for not drinking, but really, buying books is just as enticing to us, isn't it?
