  1. She'd always said she planned to do this - I remember her talking about it in an interview. It's a bit of a shame that the she had to be "outed" though. Would have been nice to see what the sales were like after the paperback was published, although the volume of hardbacks sold is quite impressive with no author promotion.

Fair point. Let's see what today brings! Who'd have thought on Wednesday evening that match would make it to Sunday .

Funnily enough, OH said "he should've given that" to which my response was, "he should've walked." Gone are those days ...
  4. Hello Terence You will be able to delete your own posts, but you have to have made a certain number of posts on the forum before that option is available to you. I think it's 30, but I'm not sure.

    DON'T SAY THAT!!!!
  6. No, this is only my second Du Maurier. I do intend to read more, and regardless of how I feel about The House on the Strand when I've finished it, it won't put me off reading more. Looks like I'll have to try My Cousin Rachel next
  7. Thanks for the update Sue, that's good to hear. It's definitely one I'm going to get at some point, probably for a holiday read. Today I've downloaded Once You Break A Knuckle by D. W. Wilson from the Kindle Daily Deal. I saw the author at ShortStoryVille last year, and he read an excerpt from one of the stories and talked about the collection and his background, and I've been meaning to buy it ever since, so at 99p it was a snip! I'm still reading The House on the Strand which I'm still not sure about. So far, it's nowhere near living up to my experience of Rebecca but we'll see where it goes.
  8. Kermode and Mayo (webcam) and the Ashes
  9. I read The Journal of Dora Damage at the same time as Kay, and I feel exactly the same! Some very disturbing images are either described or alluded too and I had no idea that was where the story was going either, but it was a definite page turner, stomach churning at times, and I'm not sure how to review it either.
  10. I'm reading The House on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier at the moment. Hadn't read the synopsis at all, and didn't realise what I was getting into! Rather odd, but about a third of the way through and still finding my feet with it at the moment.

Didn't see any of it, but caught a few snippets on the BBC news website, and it does seem that Steve is right - they seems to be saying that our bowlers seemed to forget they had to bowl until they'd taken all ten wickets! Will try and watch the highlights tonight to get a better feel for how the day went.
  12. Cough isn't quite as bad now, and my voice is coming back slowly, and generally feeling a bit better now. Coping remarkably well with the weather considering I'm not a summer person, but looking forward to the weekend already. Windows open and fan on at night though in order to cool the bedroom down enough to sleep. I was anticipating watching the cricket at the weekend, but can't see the game lasting that long at the rate England are going!
  13. Wow, great books! I've read Good Evening Mrs Craven which has a lovely sense of fun and wit, despite the fact there's a war on, and also Someone At A Distance which I felt was the very thoughtful book - one to take your time with and think about.

And let's not forget Jonathan Marray who won the Men's Doubles last year too.
  16. Developed a cough over the weekend, and it's been annoying me all day today too, and is now causing me to lose my voice! (OH is trying not to look too happy that I can't talk )
  17. I started Death at Victoria Dock by Kerry Greenwood today - it's the fourth in the Phryne Fisher series.

How did they do that in that heat? Such long points and games - I can't believe it was only three sets! Seriously great entertainment, albeit edge of the seat stuff.
  19. I've just finished The Journal of Dora Damage, so that's 445 pages for me this weekend. Unfortunate timing, in that the tennis interrupted a lot of my reading time, but I've enjoyed reading this book, although I don't think I really read the blurb when I bought it, and I had no idea what it was going to be about when I started reading it!
  20. I'm not sure of the time I spent reading yesterday, but I know it wasn't enough! I'm upto page 157 of The Journal of Dora Damage but I'm going to try and get as much done this morning as I can, before the tennis starts.
  21. I watched (most of) Skyfall again last night I might have fallen asleep for a few mintess occasionally, but it was late
  22. What a lovely bookish day today has been so far! I've read some more of The Journal of Dora Damage and also received some presents from Kay. I opened the envelope to be presented with these: How beautiful do they look? The paper is absolutely gorgeous and I'll definitely be keeping it. I'm a very lucky girl, because when I opened them, they had two fabulous books inside! The books are The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen by Syrie James and a lovely Persephone book, Greenery Street by Denis Mackail, so both fit in beautifully with my challenges.
  23. Lovely day so far, starting with collecting a parcel from the post office and opening it to find some presents from Kay, then off to Bristol for coffee while I read another couple of chapters of my book, then did a bit of Gromit hunting, bought some new shoes and trainers, then visited my Dad and watched some Top Gear with him. Finally back home for the tennis (come ON Sabine!!!!) and a sort out of the photos I've taken today.

It was fantastically entertaining, especially this little down time moments of humour too. There's nothing better than seeing two competitors at the top of their game but displaying how much they enjoy what they are doing, and entertaining the crowd too. Absolutely. I missed it the first time around (I was dancing around the kitchen celebrating at the time ), but seeing in the highlights programme later, it was very sad to see. I did laugh at Navratilova saying that she always looked her competitor in the eye when she shook hands at the end of the game - that's because you were never the loser, Martina!
