  1. Is it a male or female author?
  2. I've read all her other books, and have loved them all, but haven't got this one yet. Will be very interested to hear what you think of it.
  3. We watched The Artist at the weekend, and OH was non-plussed by it (I'd seen it before and thought it was ok), so we then watched another b&w film straight afterwards which was much better - Two Way Stretch with Peter Sellers, Bernard Cribbins, Lionel Jeffries and a whole raft of recognisable faces. Very funny, we both really enjoyed it.
  4. Hello! Welcome to BCF What sort of books do you like to read?
  5. Close enough, it's actually The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared Well done, Hayley. Your go next.
  6. Ok, next quote is … ***** ******** hesitated as he stood in the flowerbed that ran along one side of the Old People's Home. He was wearing a brown jacket with brown trousers and on his feed he had a pair of brown indoor slippers.
  7. I've not read them, so I'll just guess the next book in the series that hasn't been mentioned yet … Prince Caspian?
  8. I might have to ban myself looking at this thread - too many books get added to wish list!!! (Only joking)
  9. I didn't know there was a sequel planned, but to spend so much time setting up the history and organisation of the Chequy, it seems a waste not to make it into a series!
  10. Here's an interview from Waterstone's with Donna Tartt talking about The Goldfinch to Kirsty Wark --> http://www.waterstones.com/blog/2014/01/the-goldfinch-donna-tartt-in-conversation/
  11. Decided to have the morning out and visited Slimbridge which is one of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust visitor centres. It as a lovely morning, feeding the swans, ducks, moorhens and my personal favourites, the Canadian geese. It was a bit cold, but manageable, and we even saw some goldfinches up close at the bird feeders in one of the hides, and a woodpecker too. Got back this afternoon, and we've now got driving rain and strong winds - already had to go out and stand the wheelie bin back upright as it had blown over! I've just lit the fire, and now setting in for a cosy session of sewing in front of the wood burner stove.
  12. Sadia, you might be interested in the thread on the television series - The Vampire Diaries
  13. I actually stopped reading in my twenties, and came back to it with a vengeance in my thirties. It's just a case of balance, sometimes life doesn't give you enough time for reading, and other times it does, and I think the break from books made it all the more special when I picked them up again, and I'm now in a place where I have time to thoroughly enjoy my reading.
  14. Another 7/10 for me this week http://www.waterstones.com/blog/2014/01/waterstones-week-in-books-quiz-24th-january-2014/
  15. It must be so difficult for you not being able to read digital books, especially as you struggle to find the paperback versions of those you'd like to read. We're very lucky in the UK as there are lots of secondhand bookshops and charity shops selling used books at low prices as well as libraries with good selections and the ability to reserve books from other libraries in the area which are then delivered to our local libraries. I used to struggle with ebooks on backlit screens, but since the Kindle e-ink technology came along, I've had no problems at all, and I recently also got reading glasses which have been an incredible improvement for me (now I'm in my 40s, I'm getting old and have to have normal vision glasses and separate reading ones too! ). I actually prefer reading on the Kindle, mainly because I can read in a consistent typeface, and adjust the size of the text if I need to, as well as the convenience of carry all those books on one device. Sorry to hear it such a struggle for you, as I dread not being able to read as much as I do for whatever reason, and hope things will improve for you in time.
  16. I'm almost a quarter of the way into The Rook by Daniel O'Malley now, and it's still exposition city! Such a lot of detail needed to explain the world, but I love the way the author's doing it, and I'm enjoying it so far.
  17. I haven't read them as other members on here who've read them haven't given them glowing reviews, but I have watched and enjoyed the television series. Perhaps you could write bit more about the books? I think it's quite a long series now, isn't it? What did you think of them and why do you like them?
  18. Well done, Chrissy, that's the one! Over to you ...
  19. I must admit, I often forget I've pre-ordered a Kindle book in Amazon, and the first I know of it is when the email appears in my inbox to tell me I've purchased something new. I then just switch the network on and it downloads immediately.
  20. Started The Rook at lunchtime and read about 50 pages. So far … it's a keeper!
  21. Thanks everyone for all the advice yesterday - thankfully, I was so tired last night, I fell asleep almost as soon as my head hit the pillow and slept right through, so the cough never had a chance to get going. I will still buy myself a jar of Vicks next time I go shopping, just in case it happens again.
  22. I'm sure I've seen the 1947 Danny Kaye film, but I guess reading that Wikipedia page, it doesn't stick to the original story either
  23. I guess it's a YA fantasy/horror
