  1. I, too, liked the story. Picoult always seems to bring out conflicting emotions in me --

For example, with PT, I struggled with Katie and what her "punishment" or lesson should be. I struggled with the ban she placed under for a short time, but I also had trouble with her denials of the pregnancy and child. It's like I went back and forth b/t thinking she'd suffered enough, and that her denial meant she wasn't learning anything from the experience.

I guess this is from the psychological aspect Picoult weaves through so many of her novels.. It always seems to show two conflicting sides, and I usually swap back and forth from one side to the other.

Anyone else have this kind of reaction to her writing?

  2. I recently finished this book (just before the end of 2008) and so did a search to see people's thoughts on it. Between this thread and another, I noticed that many readers were about to start this book or had it in their TBR pile. Since then, has anyone else finished the book and if so, any thoughts on it? I loved the story and hated seeing it end.

  3. We move so much right now that I don't keep a lot of books. Anything I buy, I pass on to someone else to avoid having to lug it around in a suitcase from country to country. Before we moved overseas, I used the library to avoid paying a fortune for books that I can get for free.

When I move into a settled home, I'll have to debate between buying all my books so I can keep and display them on some pretty bookshelves, or still using the library and saving space/money by not buying and storing books.

    We'll see!

  4. oooh my little guilty pleasures include any kind of celeb-related magazine (People, US Weekly, etc). i even regularly visit eonline.com and ew.com .. I just can't help myself! I also like O (Oprah's magazine) and Real Simple (the organizational magazine).

  5. ooooooh i couldn't bear to look! although i will say that there are those that i'm trying to remember where i was in a book if i didn't mark it, and i have to flip around and read a couple of lines to establish if that's the correct page or not. sometimes i've read things that i think gives too much away and i'm all upset about it. i've realized that with me, i tend to actually forget that part i read... as i get back into the story at the right spot, the little tidbit i read flies out of my head completely and then i don't think about it again until i re-read it again. i have a feeling it wouldn't be quite the same with reading the ending of a book b/c thats just too hard to forget, but still.. makes me grateful for my apparently terrible memory! :D

  6. That's awesome for them.. India is a different world!!

I'm enjoying it here.. It's a bit of a shock to the system at first, but there's so much to do in Bombay and we've made some great friends. I've also been lucky enough to volunteer with an NGO, which is a great experience for me. We have 3 more months here, and I know some things here will be hard to say goodbye to!

  7. I'm tracking the books I've read in 2009... I stole shamelessly from the suggestions and discussions of books/authors on this board, so I'm very grateful to you all!

And great challenge, Roxi.. good luck !!

  10. Wow.. I'm ashamed.. :D

I haven't read a classic in so long.. since college 4 years ago! I've been inspired by this thread though. There were quite a few classics we read for classes through HS and college (Tess, Scarlet Letter, etc) that were great reads. I'm going to add some of these classics to my list to be read.. I bet I'll appreciate them even more now that I'm a bit older, too!
