#87 Lying In Wait - Liz Nugent
Short review. Basically two people unintentionally murder a girl and the story follows them covering it up while their son and the sister of the dead girl dig deeper. Set in Ireland mostly in the 80s.
It was okay, like the previous novel by the same author, but it really wasn't anything special. Everyone who became an inconvenience to the story playing out in the correct manner basically just died or something or other, and there were too many unlikely twists. There was a weird focus on the son's weight throughout the novel (which was really inconsistent) and it turned out to all be leading up to one final, incredibly, well, in-credible, twist at the end. The characters were fairly uninteresting. The writing wasn't bad, it was an easy book to read - apart from poor setting due to the only things that set it in the eighties being constant pop culture references to songs/movies etc released around that time - but it was just too forced. Lifeless, I guess is the word for it.
I gave it 3 stars because I did enjoy reading it, I was just left very underwhelmed.

I've been re-reading Salem's Lot. I don't think I'm enjoying it as much as I did the first time a few years ago but I'm still finding it to be a pretty solid read.
-
Very warm and humid, and it was bright earlier but now it's quite cloudy.

I'm reading a paper book at the moment for the first time in months and I'm finding it really difficult! I'm reading far slower and getting distracted much more easily. Bizzare, isn't it?

I'm still on prepay too. I recently bought my first brand new phone in years (I had been living with hand-me-downs a couple of generations behind since for about 10 years). Turns out €200 doesn't get you a great phone anymore. It's alright, but I would put money into my next phone, as I rely on it quite heavily.
I'm trying to reduce my use of social media in general, so I've taken Facebook and Messenger off my phone, but I still have Whatsapp which I use for direct communcation, and Snapchat because I like taking ridiculous pictures of my everyday life and sharing them with the poor unfortunates who added me without knowing what they were in for
I also use my phone as an alarm, for calendar and calculator reference and for making memos (usually shopping lists). I use it for a few other things too, even just like seeing what time it is, so I'd be pretty stuck without it.

I was actually around all weekend and could have taken part but just wasn't feeling up to reading. Next one, hopefully!

My weekend wound up being extremely uneventful. Sidenote: People who not only suggest something but go so far as to talk you into it, before bailing on it, really annoy me.
My 'life skills' programme for managing my anxiety is going okay, I guess. A lot of it isn't that new to me, and I'm not yet at the stage where I'm putting anything into action (I am only a week in, I suppose), but at least I am enjoying it and engaging with the tools included in it. For the moment I seem mostly to be documenting my thoughts/feelings/behaviours in a variety of situations and hopefully once I begin to understand them I'll be able to tackle them.
The weather here is staying very warm and very humid, which isn't doing my mood any favours.

Just on last week's - glad to see I'm not the only person who has no time for Haruki Murakami! Probably the only writer in existence who makes me want to throw a tantrum!
On this week's, I can't say I've ever read about any characters and thought 'I wish they were part of my family'. I'll think about it though.

My reading is still moving very slow - I've got from being 7/8 books ahead of schedule down to only 3. I'm glad I'm still ahead, but I need to get back on track.. Currently about halfway through Salem's Lot, and I still have a couple of others I need to finish, one being After Me Comes The Flood by Sarah Perry. I'm about two thirds through that, I think, so hoping a couple of lunchtimes will get it finished.

I seem to have wound up starting a rewatch of How I Met Your Mother.

I bought Black-Eyed Susans by Julia Beaberlin and All The Light We Cannot See yesterday in Waterstones. Haven't bought paper books in an actual shop in ages!

The coming of September means it's nearly time for my firstborn to start school. I can't believe it's come around so soon.
He starts on Monday - very scary!
Ooooh good luck with that!
Yaayyyyy, SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!!
I am SOOO happy to see the end of August!
Me too, my favourite part of the year starts now! Enjoy your weekend.
I'm considering taking up an evening class in making a patchwork quilt. It says no experience required, though I've never even used a sewing machine... but I'm always seeing the gorgeous fabrics and quilt squares Chesilbeach posts in her thread and I love the idea of making my own.
Hmmmm I'll see. I'd be very nervous going to a class by myself.

I can't believe it's September!
I'm so happy!

Sorted, paid! Whew.

If by some miracle I ever get back to reading something by SK, it will be Salem's Lot. I still didn't like it as much as some of Ann Rice's stuff but still better than the average SK novel.
Also Noll, I can't see your GR profile unless I have an account *sadface*
You don't need to see my GR account, I read some awful tripe
Today I also purchased a hardback copy of Radiance, by Catherynne Valente. Had to order it on Amazon.com to get the cover I wanted. Easily one of my favourite books I've read in years, and can't wait to have a physical copy of it to re-read it.

I trust you have taken positive action to ensure you ARE getting paid and pretty damn quick?!
I followed it up quickly, found out nobody got paid, there was a computer error on the side of the university's bank, they're trying to resolve it. I also use that bank, so hopefully as soon as it's resolved, I'll get paid. If I'm really lucky it'll be today, but I'm not holding my breath!
-
I've started re-reading 'salem's Lot as my reading has been suffering a bit lately and I think I need to read an old favourite.
-
I didn't get paid today.
Y'know, I am *trying* to keep my mood up, but all things considered....

Really sorry to hear about the pup Virginia, that's awful
I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping/staying asleep recently. Was asleep for about 45 mins when my housemate and her bf decided to go to the bathroom three times (her room and the bathroom are on either side of my room - I hear all the doors, the toilet flushing etc) which woke me up and an hour later I still can't get back to sleep.
Time to invest in ear bud things. What are they called? I googled earbuds for sleeping and all I got was headphones!

I don't write reviews on Goodreads, but I write them on my blog and copy them to here - I keep meaning to also copy them to Goodreads.

Cloudy, grey, drizzly and humid.
-
That doesn't make any sense
!

Echo that - I'm sensitive to plants in the garden and get rashes and whatnot - aloe vera gel works wonders.
Awesome, I'll get some on Wednesday when I'm paid if it's not gone by then!
-
Hope your rash gets better Nollaig. I had a similar one once on my legs, also from grass I think, and I found that aloe vera - the green stuff - really helped.
Oooh, thanks for that!
