  1. There's a James Bond movie on, bleh.
  2. Ohh okay I thought you didn't, I must have read something wrong. Sorry I do hope you enjoy it though, and either way I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
  3. I'll be curious to hear what you think of the book about Wilde. One of my 'reading challenges' this year is to read a selection of books about him - but the only ones I want to read are by Lord Douglas, Robert Sherard, and Vyvyan and Merlin Holland - (Oscar's friends and family), as well as Frank Harris' two volume set as he's supposed to be fairly unbaised. My concern with older books about Wilde would be that they might be biased against him.
  4. 7000th post! Pig Island is worth a read ANYWAY for the first half/three-quarters, so once you're prepared to possibly not like the end, you'll probably enjoy a lot of it ETA: If you want my copy you can have it. I think I still have it, but it's at my other house so it'll be a couple weeks before I can get it out to you.
  5. Yeahh I'll probably read anything I can pick up second hand at the charity shop over the next month or two, I'll let you know what and when I've read it I actually really WANTED to like her. She clearly has potential and some good ideas.
  6. I've read one Mo Hayder book - Pig Island, and it was terrible. It had the potential to be great but it went completely off the wall. Gore and graphic writing doesn't bother me - though there was plenty of that - the story was just a bit ridiculous. Having said that, I'd probably read another book or two by her before dismissing her completely, she may be a 'hit or miss' author in that some books are great and some are terrible. Up to the point where ridicule set in, it was a rivetting read.
  7. Kell has good taste, listen to her Oh the other one I meant to mention - Tom Holland's The Vampyre - I started that and couldn't finish it. I wouldn't say avoid it, because I'm going to give it another go myself, but I would say don't rush out and buy it as the first purchase of the year
  8. Right, new year, new thread. The guidelines for picking and posting your list are as follows: 1. You are only to choose your top 5 books. No more, preferably no less. 2. Your choices can be from any genre you like, and for any reason you like. 3. This is not necessarily a 'favourites' thread - while you are more than welcome to list your 5 favourites as your choices, the KEY idea here is to name the books you think EVERYBODY should read once. 4. Please note you are welcome to use your list from 2008 if you so choose. 5. A book series is counted as one choice. Name the series, rather than an individual book. - Once enough posts have accumulated, I will list the top 20 here and update it on a regular basis) - Please feel free to discuss other peoples choices (in a constructive manner - people are allowed pick books for any reason, so don't start criticizing reasoning.) - In December I will post the 2008, 2009 and 2010 lists together for comparison!
  9. Labyrinth - Kate Mosse To Kill a Mocking Bird - Harper Lee The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova Chocolat - Joanne Harris Perfume - Patrick Suskind Twilight - Stephanie Meyer The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown I have read or delved into all of the above, and look forward to hearing your thoughts on certain ones, particularly The Historian and Perfume, and I think them both awesome books. The others, with the exception of Twilight and Da Vinci Code, are brilliant books, and Twilight and Da Vinci are enjoyable if not guilty pleasures.
  10. Kylie I saw you last night when you were reserving over ten posts with nothing in them and I was wondering what you had planned (didn't comment so as not to interrupt your lists) but WOW. That is some amount of lists! And all the challenges!! Lady, I salute you
  11. I had a chicken and bacon sandwich just a while ago, and I'm going out tonight so probably nothing, but there's duck spring rolls there if I want them.
  12. Closed, re-named, and moved to the Past Logs section.
  13. Transformers.
  14. White Wolf related RPGS are quite different from console ones Rawr - in real life they involve pens and paper, on forums they involve a sort of interactive story where you have to make up a character with strengths and weaknesses and act out that character - but your moves successes are determined by rules and (I think) a sort of dice throwing.
  15. Oh thank you Kylie! That's a really interesting angle on his life - he was always taking everything around him in so I imagine his reading would have impacted his life massively. I'll keep an eye out for that, cheers
  16. I don't like those, so that makes no odds to moi.
  17. Today I had: a sweet chilli chicken pizza with peppers and red onion, my roast dinner, kinder milky bars, coke and ice cream with chocolate mousse. Beat that.
  18. For me: John Connolly Anna McPartlin Oscar Wilde but you'd have to give a mention to the likes of Bram Stoker and Jonathon Swift.
  19. My food is nicer.
  20. For some reason West Side Story is on my tv.
  21. I had a lovely New Year's Day dinner! I had roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, and roast parsnips with gravy. There was lamb too but I didn't really eat any of that.
  22. I'm really glad to see this has been such a success, since I had hoped a project like this would be put together Congrats Chimera, Lucy, Giulia and Stephanie - and thanks
  23. Kimmy - I bought the Beach on the strength of the film, so I'm glad to hear someone enjoyed it! Charm - thank you, I'm sure I will
  24. Welcome! Personally I'm delighted to see another Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan - we can always use more of those around here! Looking forward to seeing what sort of stuff you've read within that genre!
