  1. I was really lucky to read this book last year when I knew nothing about it - I could still forsee the ending but it was a very powerful read. The childs view of adult horror was well written and a powerful way of showing how such historic monstrosities were some peoples everyday life and unremarkable to them. I gave my copy to my 13yr old neice and she was gripped by the story and it did help her realise that these things happened to real people of all ages not just text book people. I'd be happy for my children to read it once they can handle it as a self-read but they're 6 & 4 right now so obviously it's not time. They do know about the holocaust though and the basic outline of what happened to the jewish population. It has been discussed when we talk about bullying and racism and what can happen at the very very worst extent. Granted my elderly mum was a bit stunned when her 4 yr old grand-daughter started to tell her about 'the bad man Mr Hitler'

    Your Age?

ooooh yes - sounds like our place exactly! I'm 34 but for some reason can't get past saying 32 when anyone asks how old I am or when I fill forms in ...am I in denial and denying it ?? Anyway I feel more like 84 lately but have to say I've got happier as I've got older.
  13. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone - this is such a great forum !! It just goes to prove that the best people can be found surrounded by books !
  14. Hi there - I'm even newer I think but glad you found thid great forum too !
  15. Hello! I'm new here too - wonderful find isn't it ? I'm very jealous of your study subjects btw.
  16. My shelves are a real mixture of fiction, non-fiction, reference books and poetry. I have a passion for social history so there are shelves of read & tbr relating to people and places through time - my main weaknesses in terms of history are WW2, London and New York. I also love poetry so have tons of poetry books - many I just pick up and buy but havent dipped into yet! Fiction wise I'm happy with a darn good story in most genres as my shelves will show - I actually buy alot of books based on their covers so I have all sorts here but they LOOK intriguing.......
  17. Michael Marshall Smith - Only Forward It's a very memorable read and the kind of head-trip you deserve when reaching 1000 !
  18. Can I explain why I wanted to jump off the top of a tower-block ? A Long Way Down - Nick Hornby
  19. I've only recently been able to claw some time & energy back for reading so my book goes wherever I do! I manage a few pages whilst the kiddies have breakfast...a page on the loo sometimes.... I love reading in the bath and always in the evenings/bedtime now. I get an extra chapter a night in at kiddies bedtime too as we're reading 'real books' as my son calls them rather than short stories, so it's not my book as such but I do get to read
  20. Thanks for this review - I love Peter Ackroyd's books but was unsure when I heard about this one. Definately sounds like it's worth a read now!
  21. I find the Titanic fascinating - I've read some great factual books about the disaster, survivors and the wreck, but I've never tried any of the fictionalised accounts. I love the non-fiction as I've never been on a cruise ship so imagining the size and scale as well as the luxury is amazing. I'm drawn to photographs of the wreck too - I know it might seem mawkish but I could look at them for hours, so ghostly and still.
  22. Hello everyone I'm Bella and I have a lifelong love of books and reading. I've always been a book hoarder and until I had my little ones I was a voracious reader! I've been slowed somewhat whilst my children have been young but at last I am able to get back into daily reading without falling asleep or losing concentration I can now make a proper start on my bookstack which is currently 3 shelves wide and consists of all the books I've been longing to read but wanted to savour. So now that I can luxuriate in books again, it's so great to find a forum full of other readers - and a source of reviews and opinions too. Now I just need to finish this unsatisfying Hornby book I've promised to read!
