  1. Anyone doing read-a-thon this weekend? I think I'd be up for it! I have a thing on Saturday evening but that's only one night.
  2. I hope the book's good and the jar picked wisely! I agree, it's quite exciting! Coincidentally I just made myself a new book jar yesterday (I got rid of the first one for some reason... But wanted to try it again )
  3. That's a busy day, with nerve wrecking and exciting events! I hope it's just a normal dental check up and nothing to do with any horrorful procedues! I hope you have loads of fun afterwards! Give you doggy pack a huggle from me!
  4. We also have self service points in the libraries these days, even the small library in my hometown. I think it's a massive shame that the staff is encouraged to avoid serving people so that they'd use the equipment instead. That's like telling them that you'll be soon totally replaced by the machines. Once we've put the machines in, you will be needed less and less when people finally start to know how to operate the machines. It's just such a shame Of course they need people behind the 'scenes' to stack the books and shelf them, but it's putting a machine between the patron and the worker, and it's very isolating Edit: I've also heard that in some places there are no staff members any more, because of cut backs, and a library is running solely because of volunteers who keep it going I mean I love it that there are volunteers, but it's just ... a raging SHAME that that's what we've come to
  5. I do like Finland I'm partial to all the Nordic countries and I don't know if I'd ever want to live anywhere else, at least for a longer period of time. That's so funny, and cool about the flag! I had no idea! Yep, MN and FIN be peas in the same po(n)d Thanks! I've been enjoying the peace and quiet, but I have to say, I've not yet fully managed to relax. It's just that I feel like somebody's going to come soon and tell me I need to move away, or that I'll be getting a flatmate. That was my life for 13 months and it's easy to shake off. My living situation turned upside down every 2-3 months, and it's like I'd just gotten used to the way things were when there was some other new development and things changed again. I haven't even dared get rid of the banana boxes because I feel like I will need them soon enough. Even though I know I have 10 full months!! It's going to take a bit of time to get out of the old mindset... Edit: I forgot to say that I'm having a dilemma with the bookcase. I don't know in which order to put my books! There are smaller sections and bigger sections to the bookcase, and as much as I like the look of it, it does mean that I can't organize the books in just which ever way or alphabetically. I need to take the size of each book into consideration. I'd also like to do something new and different: arrange a section with TBR and non-TBR. But that would feel very cut-throat It's like I'd divide the books into two camps and they were each other's enemies Before the move, I binned my book box But I made one again. Didn't take as much time with fewer titles now... I'm also wondering if I should dedicate a particular shelf for books I want to read in the next month or so.
  6. How is it October already? Where has this year gone! I finished a book last night, and it feels like it took me ages to read it. Looking forward to starting a new book!
  7. What's happening in your life today?
  8. I hope so, too. The friend is the one I've known the longest. We actually met at the maternity ward, she was born a day later than I was It's a bit odd at the moment... When I went to get the few things I'd left behind this weekend, she wasn't as distant as she was when the incident had just happened and all was out in the air. She helped me pack stuff and we laughed at things, but I don't know... I think we need to address the subject at some point. I'm more annoyed with her husband. That's the story I'll be telling my grandchildren and everyone who will listen! Oh my gosh, it sounds so idyllic! You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place and to be from where you are We don't have a lot of old buildings here in Finland, we aren't very historic in that respect. And we don't have mountains or castles... But ours is the land of more than 10,000 lakes, at least I'll work wherever I can! Meaning, I'm looking for a job and I'll take what I can get Keep your fingers crossed... This is my third night in my new apartment. I love how much there's closet and shelf space. The bookcase is huge! There are empty spaces in it... Which one might take to mean that one could buy more books to fill in the spaces.. But one shouldn't... I shan't! So odd to be living in Helsinki. There was a time in my life when I was curious about it and wanted to live here, but that was more than 10 years ago.
  9. Surely The Last Family in England by the same author is on your wishlist at least, then? Great review of The Humans, poppyshake! The book's already on my wishlist, but if it hadn't been there, you would've sold it to me!
  10. What kinds of books do you normally like to read? Could re-reading an old favorite help you get out of the slump? I've been in a slump or two lately, and for me Louis Sachar's books have been a great help. I've read his children's book and YA books and they've been so readable and enjoyable. Maybe you could also try something a bit easier, like YA. Or maybe fast paced thrillers?

Episode 10, There's Something About Harry:
  12. Athena: I think I watched your video originally on FB, but it was fun to watch it again! Such adorable doggies I had a dog sitter gig later this month! I'm again going to dog sit for a friend who's traveling, I'll be watching over the Chihuahua and Jack Russell Terrier for 4 days! I think it's on the Halloween weekend, so I think I'm going to read a lot of books and I'll be happy to have the dogs as company if I read scary books Further great news: my landlord said that I can have pets. Well, I won't be having any because of my allergies, but it means that the Chihu and the Terrier can come visit me here in my home!!!! For some reason they don't give me any sort of allergic reactions, so I'll be very happy to have them visit me! Edit: My friend told me that his husband prefers me as the dog sitter, to any other dog sitters they've had. Apparently it's because I take the job very seriously and I don't mess about, but also because I love the dogs and I keep a journal of what we've done during the day and what's happened I like to write down any funny things that have happened or that I've noticed about the dogs

    Hello

Very cute! We have a thread for pets over here, feel free to post about your dog and other possible pets if you like!
  14. Libraries do face cutbacks and some are closed over here, but I don't think it's happening on as large a scale as over there. From what I've read about libraries on this forum, Finland has it pretty good in comparison. I'm very, very grateful for that!!

So weird and so cool! Don't worry about it at all! I can totally understand you wanting to binge-watch. I think I'm going to binge-watch the rest of the series tonight, I only have 3 episodes to watch. Luckily I have the 3rd season borrowed as well. I actually have to binge-watch that one, because the due date is 5.10. and I have to take it back to the library I've just reserved the fourth and sixth season, too. I have my own copy of season 5. I totally know what you mean! :D It was soooooo funny!!!! I was going to write about it but you beat me to it. I mean you can't come up with a better nickname :D She'll now go by gEtv.... Me, too. Well the stuff we've been learning on this season Very naughty And did you noticed how he had his hands in his pockets, on purpose? Okay!!! That will be later today, I hope! I do remember there was something that was coming..... But can't remember exactly what. Oh I do remember one thing, but probably not how it was resolved... Okay, Oh, and remember how Okay!!

    Dexter

I totally agree with what you said about Dexter's train of thought! I love it Yep it's odd that we forget so many details, but what's more odd is that re: the spoilers we're now talking about, we both remember the same things and have forgotten the same things :D So in sync! Re spoiler #3: I would've been so annoyed even at the thought of it, and would've said no thank you!! Which episode are you on? I just mini-binged watched eps 7-9. So tempted to continue!! This is getting really good!!!!!

    Dexter

I know it isn't a huge plot spoiler, but it was a thing that I didn't remember from the last time I watched the show and so ... to me it was a spoiler. But hey, it's tricky to know what to put in spoiler tags, when you're further ahead and can't remember what has happened by which episode. These things happen! I'm still going to come back to the earlier posts of you two when I've settled and and stuff, but for now I have to mention that, oh and which episode is this now... Episode 5 - The Dark Defender: I'd forgotten that Episodes 4 - 5 - I'd also forgotten that I remembered most of the stuff on season 1 but there's so much to season 2 that I can't remember, and I'm loving it! It's like watching the show for the first time Oh and in last episode I watched, episode 5: Doakes This is sooooo gooooooood!!! Kylie, which episode are you now on? The next one I'm going to watch is number 6 - Dex, Lies and Videotapes.
  19. Then it's just not your thing, I suppose These things can't be helped!
  20. Haha I believe I saw the film first, too But I think that this is one of those rare ones where the book and the movie are equally good. My favorite scene is
  21. I really hope you enjoy Holes! And what a bargain, too!!
  22. After my last post I went to visit the website (using the banner link on here! ) and noticed the bargain store, yes. But it's so different from what it used to be, and seems like there aren't as many titles there. It doesn't help that I can't remember what it used to be like, though I just remember that it was bigger and better! The site's definitely changed, overall, the last time I visited. In the bargain store section I felt like the covers of the books were sort of blurred. Didn't like it at all. So strange.
  23. Awwww, too bad you didn't like it Have you seen the British original?
  24. There used to be a bargain bucket, and there were loads of books there, but then it disappeared... I don't know if it's there now.
  25. Are there no trams in Minho? I'm afraid my knowledge of Portugal is lacking But I'm pretty sure yours is a lot warmer place to live in, and I wouldn't mind that sometimes! So the envy can go both ways... How big a place is Minho? I'm from a very small town myself, originally
