Hello BookGeek and welcome to the forum!
I hope you enjoy it here
-
The more I think about this, the more I start to believe that yes, a lot of the names on the list are from different references and not always books. I also remember hearing the Wodehouse comment but I don't recall them mentioning the actual title. And I know that this particular thing interests you a great deal, being a Wodehouse fan yourself
I believe a lot of the list came from an official list posted on the WBs website, so maybe the show's creators had some say on exactly which books should be added?I wonder if we'll ever have a fully comprehensive list.
Ach so! Well I don't mind that at all, because the show's creators are obviously a bunch of geniouses and I don't mind reading their recommendations
I'm going to need to take a closer look on the WBs website me thinks.
A fully comprehensive list would be a longshot, yes
One of the names on the list that are unfamiliar to me is Dawn Powell. Rory mentioned reading her novels (short stories?) a few episodes back and told Lane that Powell is really underrated and unknown for no good reasons and she really likes her stuff. I like the fact that Rory would also look into the less known authors and try to boost their name
-
Ah, okay Kylie, somehow I had the impression that you haven't read the book yet!
Hmph, now that I've been watching the show I sometimes hear the girls talking about a movie that's on the Rory Book list, and I'm beginning to wonder if the listmaker hasn't realised that it's the movie they're talking about, not the book, or whether the books will be also mentioned later in the series. For example I'm pretty sure they mentioned The Graduate as a movie, as well as some others (why didn't I write them down...). I think it's weird to list them as books to be read...

I just realised you keep a book blog outside the forum
Also noticed that you've put your 'stuff not fluff' challenge on there
I'm off to browse the blog a little further!
Edit: ooh, I also noticed that you've got the sequel to GwtW - Scarlett! I just bought it yesterday, I hope it's at least half as good as the original thing. It hasn't received too good ratings on Goodreads...
-
OK then, I promise I'll support you during this difficult time.
I could be your sponsor, and if you find yourself in a bookshop (or online) and tempted to buy a book, you can call me and I'll talk you
into itout of it.a bit like AA? BA, bookaholics anonymous! Don't support me too much though, if I just happen to see a book I've wanted for years and that only costs me like 1 euro, then I must be able to buy it, right?
I'm not gonna go looking, though! I wanna stay outta trouble
-
I don't use the local library because it got closed about a year ago and they still haven't reopened it!
Why, why??
-
I know that was supposed to be sad but you ruined it with the book monkey Chrissy

My cousin is very, very, very rich (well, her husband is), and they just built themselves a huge new house. They have some gorgeous bookcases throughout the lower level of their house, especially in the front and back living rooms. There are some lovely, old-looking books in them, and my mom asked her what they were. It turns out they're all in Swedish (which she doesn't speak or read) and they were bought by the decorator for looks. They don't have even one readable book in their house! Argh!!!
I see your eye-rolling and raise you thrice:
 That's the most depressing thing I've heard in a while.
-
Thanks
I'm pretty pleased with myself. The best way for me to mourn is just to jump right into the next book, which I've done.
I see it's Living Dead in Dallas! I hope you enjoy it, I think it was one of my favorites
-
This time I'm for real, I'll be on the NOT-buying mode for at least this week and the next week (hopefully for the rest of this month). If I find books in the free book trolley in the library that's okay of course
I have so many books I want to start reading asap plus I've also got some great books from the library... Stieg Larsson for instance!
-
Vinay, I don't think there's much for men, either, I'm sorry:( There's too much of the feminine gossip, costumes and descriptions. But you can always go ahead and give it a go
Oh, I forgot about that! And yes, she did mean that Thackeray. I liked Vanity Fair very much; I gave it a 9/10 and wrote in my little review: 'It won't be on my list of favourite books, maybe because it was a little long-winded at times, but I did get very much absorbed in the book and the fates of the characters.' Not sure if that helps. That helps indeed, glad you liked it! The copy I bought was so beautiful and approachable I had to get it. And the blurb was convincing too
-
I just finished Gone with the Wind. Phew! What an epic novel! It's definitely one that is going to stay with me for a long time and will be re-read in the future.
Wow, you did it! In 1,5 weeks too, at that!! Good job Kylie
Sorry to know it's over for you though, I know how much you liked the novel
Maybe you should have one of those mourning costumes? And a veil? Or at least an Onyx-stone!
I'm gonna be reading GwtW today
-
If you liked Jeeves and Wooster I'm sure you'll like Full Moon. I've found that all of Wodehouse's stories are similar in style and plot; just with different characters.
And I'm sure you'll like Vanity Fair as well.
57 books so far...
I'm thinking I'll be quite likely able to enjoy Jeevesless Wodehouse, too
I really can't wait to start reading some of these books, I'm particularly keen on starting the Dave Pelzer books, but I still have GwtW! And I haven't had time to read it in two days, yesterday I read only about 20 pages before I dosed off
Today I have the whole day ahead of me though.
57... And you know what Kylie... I ordered a couple of books from play.com during the weekend... mostly poetry, and everything was used, so it was really cheap, but still... I'm taking a break from book buying now!! I swear!
Edit: I'm gonna go and read Book Activity -thread to see if you've finished GwtW already!
I wouldn't be surprised if you had.

Excellent haul Frankie! I had a good feeling about your book shopping but I didn't want to say anything and jinx it. So that explains the rumbling I heard last night (for real! I actually did hear rumbling and thought of you, but I think it was just workmen near my place)
Are you sure it was the workmen?? =D lol!
The shopping was really good, I found the From Dante to Dickens from this place where I never find anything, and the same thing happened with the Through a Glass Darkly and Dewey. Also, the charityshop has been lately really quiet bookwise, I haven't found any good books there lately and yesterday I found 6! I'm well pleased =)
Dracula is one of my favourite books, and I'm always glad to see ol' Wodehouse around. Vanity Fair is another daunting read (because of the size) but a good read nevertheless. You will probably find Becky to be as irritating as Scarlett.I've already read Dracula but I loved it and I know I want to reread it in the future so I had to have it. I actually haven't read any Wodehouse novels other than the Jeeves stuff so I'm a bit nervous about Full Moon, but I don't mind taking 'risks'
I got Vanity Fair because it's on the 1001 Books but also because you'd mentioned that GwtW reminded you of that novel and also because I really liked the blurb. I find I'm quite into the historical fiction genre at the moment
I love that you wear your BF's clothes so you don't have to pack as many of your own. I'm so proud of you.Well it's only practical
Besides, he lives so far out of town that the only places to visit in here are the Uni and the grocerystore (I have to take a bus or walk for an hour to reach my fave bookshops), so there isn't much use for fancy clothing in here and besides I like BF's clothes =)
Great bunch of books you picked up there, Frankie! And 'From Dante to Dickens' does sound amazing! Nice work.Does the BF let you wear his new Kyle Busch shirt? It's a snazzy one indeed.
Too bad the From Dante to Dickens is a Finnish book so you can't enjoy it but I'm sure there are loads of similar stuff in English, certainly more than there is in Finnish!
BF hasn't even shown me the Kyle Busch t-shirt yet, I think he's really paranoid about jinxing the Nascar race! The worst thing is, the race was on Saturday BUT it's still not on the Internet and he hasn't therefore seen it yet
He's getting quite anxious!
Marcia, thank you so much for the note, it was so lovely of you and you made me blush! You're so awesome
Wow Frankie you really ARE a reading machine. Only one out of that lot I have read is Dracula.Laundry Fairy has all the Dave Peltzer ones. I don't like books like that so haven't read them.
Vodkafan, I think I'm more of a book buying machine
I wish I could read as quick as I buy!
Laundry Fairy seems to have a good taste! =)

Hello Kayla and welcome to the forum!

Hello Heddy and welcome to the forum!
I dare say you've come to the best of places to talk about books
-
Well I do have this bag in which I stuff my clothes, nowadays I try to pack lightly and I mostly wear BF's shirts when I'm here so I can have more room for my books when I go back
(I'm staying at BF's at the moment, I had to visit the charityshops and the secondhand bookshop here because they are my favorite ones for obvious reasons. So I actually hauled these books to BF's and then I'm going to have to haul these back to Joensuu
)
I'm very happy with my haul
I was thinking about wanting to read Scarlett and now I happened to find it just like that, also the Ann Rule book was a really pleasant surprise as well as the Dave Pelzer book which actually contains three of his books in one! The Gogol book was really cheap (1 euro) and there's the novel Taras Bulba and four short stories.
Perhaps my most favorite find was Vappu Roos's From Dante to Dickens, it's a huge a book with interesting info on some of the greatest writers, there are pics and it's in great condition, and it was only 4e
Plus, I really kept my cool in the shops, I could name more than five books that I wanted to buy but didn't want that desperately and left them in the store and saved me some money
-
Okay, I got these today:
- Barbery, Muriel: The Elegance of the Hedgehog
- Block, Stefan Merrill: The Story of Forgetting
- Clinton, Hillary Rodham: Living History (Rory)
- Gogol, Nikolai: Taras Bul'ba (& The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich, The Nose, The Overcoat and Diary of a Madman)
- Koen, Karleen: Through a Glass Darkly
- Myron, Vicki: Dewey - A Small Town, a Library and the World's Most Beloved Cat
- Pelzer, Dave: A Child Called ”It”, The Lost Boy & A Man Named Dave
- Ripley, Alexandra: Scarlett
- Rodriguez, Deborah: The Kabul Beauty School
- Roos, Vappu: From Dante to Dickens – Biographies of the World's Greatest Masters of Literature
- Rule, Ann: If You Really Loved Me
- Stoker, Bram: Dracula
- Thackeray, William Makepeace: Vanity Fair
- Wharton, Edith: The House of Mirth
- Wodehouse, P. G.: Full Moon
Secondhand books, the lot
And some of the money went to charity, so no scolding please
-
I bought Ann Rule's If You really Loved Me from a charityshop. It's about the shooting of Linda Brown, whose husband Dawid Brown figured that her stepdaughter Cinnamon must have shot her after a a fight. It takes years until the awful truth behind the events comes to light.
Has anyone read this?
-
Hmm - this was going to be my Spain book (I already have it but I've been putting it off for ages) so I might have to rethink.
This book gets 10/10 and 5/5 for me and it's on my top 5 reads ever and I would highly recommend you and everybody else who likes books and mystery to read the book. Like sirinrob said, it's not for everyone but ... Well what can I say, I love the book.
-
sorry Frankie if I have upset you, but I'm being honest in my opinion. I dont like the novel, you do. You cant please everybody all the time.
You're right of course, and you haven't upset me personally, I just feel sad for the book
-
I feel sad, and I'm taking it personally, The Shadow of the Wind is an amazing novel and I hate to see this thread with a thumbs down
Also, The Angel's Game is a prequel!
-
I watched A Dog Named Christmas last night. A nice, heartwarming movie
Some people would surely find this one oversentimental or sappy, I'm sure. I didn't let that bother me, I enjoyed it and the doggies
-
Kylie, I can't read your last post because have yet to read Vanity Fair, but this just came to my mind: Didn't Melanie
say to Ashley that she thinks Thackeray is not at good as Dickens, he isn't such a gentleman as Dickens is? I wonder if she meant William Makepeace Thackeray
(Makepeace, what a cool name
) Quick off-post: Did you like Vanity Fair? I've just bought it.
