  1. A very small change indeed! I was expecting a lot worse. Although those changes are compared to the 2008 edition, I'm doing the 2006 version and I've never even looked at the 2008 edition. What are the two that are on your TBR pile? Read them anyway, if you've bought them you want to read them and deserve to cross them off a list!! I didn't know The Reluctant Fundamentalist was on the 2008 list, I just read about the book in the May Reading Circle poll and I thought it was really interesting. What was A Short History of Tractor's in Ukranian doing on the list anyway, I thought the book was ****?? I hate that they've omitted Small Island (on my wishlist), The Plot Against America (on my wishlist), The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (I've read it and absolutely loved it), The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (on my wishlist, although not disastrous because it's on the Rory list anyway so I'll get to read it and cross it off). Weirdos!! The new additions: I love it that they've added The Elegance of the Hedgehog because I've recently bought it and it's supposed to be really good, I also wouldn't mind reading The White Tiger. But the other names? I've never heard of most of them, and Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is total BS according to BF. Aren't they supposed to add great titles and not just random novels??
  2. I kinda agree, Wuthering Heights was such an awful read for me that I feel like I want to read books 'for fun' at the moment. And for me Helter Skelter is a personal choice, I wanted to read it long before I noticed it was on the Shona list. However, I'll be keeping an eye on you guys, and I might join you if you decide to read something I've been really wanting to read anyway
  3. Does he now. Well, in all fairness, it would be easy just to write the new list down, but he makes those spreadsheets and has apparently arranged all the other lists, the added stuff and the omisions really neatly.
  4. The third novel is Evil at Heart and it was published only last year. I totally agree with I can't figure how she had the strength to go on. I'm just glad it wasn't a true story, thank goodness! I read more of Helter Skelter last night and will be continuing it today, quite naturally
  5. Happy Birthday Nici, I hope you have a lovely day and awesome pressies :D

  6. I like your enthusiasm! I'm reading Helter Skelter at the moment which is on the Shona's Rory list as it happens, it's about Charles Manson and his Family. It's surprisingly long, 664 pages and quite a slow read what with all the police/court jargon.* I don't think I'm up for another challenge in a week at least. How about you others? * Not that the jargon is incomprehensible, the hours I've spent watching CSI Miami and all the other crime shows are paying off now, it's just very detailed writing with loads of different names and characters to remember.
  7. Oh boy, that's a lot of work right there. (Must admit, it might be rather fun ) Too bad I don't have my book with me so I could make alterations. I don't think I'll be removing any of the books from the 2nd edition book though, I think I'll just be adding. Do I realise that in that way, it more than 1001 Books, and I'll never finish the challenge because new editions will always come my way? Yes Thanks Kylie for the info! Edit: I've just read some of the comments about this on the goodreads.com 1001 Books -group and there's someone saying that the difference last time (from 2006 to 2008 edition) was something like 100 books. So it's not just a small change, oh boy.
  8. Hi CW, I know it's been bloody ages! I got your last visitor message and I was going to reply to it but since I've got some other stuff I wanted to talk to you about I was going to write a PM. I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet :(

Helter Skelter was really creepy for the first 100 pages or so but now it's mostly the legal stuff, looking for evidence and so forth so they'd have a strong case against Manson and the Family, so it's not that intriguing anymore. I'm hoping it'll get better later if they're doing interviews with Manson himself, I'm expecting some pretty weirdo reasonings behind his agenda!

I hope you're well luv! Whatcha reading at the mo :)

  9. Now now Abby, I've seen you write your thoughts on books and you have no problems writing a review, let me assure you Have you read The Scarlet Pimpernel before or has it been on the wishlist? I heard that name mentioned around and I'm intrigued by the novel That's definitely an excellent haul and cheap too for such great editions
  10. Haha thanks for that, arewenearlythere I don't watch Supernatural but that was a good one! By the way, those of you who watch Supernatural, do you enjoy Padalecki's character and do you think he's as hot as Dean is in GG? Or is there a difference?
  11. Here here! A replacement copy, a chicklit novel I know my Mum will also love reading so it wasn't just for me(we share a passion for Anni Polva's novels ), and The Sinner was only 70cnt, and the Stieg Larsson was only 2e and in original language! Plus there were loads of other books I thought about buying but I really kept cool and calm Oh wow you've already read Cloud Atlas!! I've been wanting to read it for ages but I've heard it's sort of a tricky book to read? With different stories beginning and continuing and ending in weird order? Do correct me if I'm wrong. Cloud Atlas is the book by Mitchell that I've wanted to read for ages but recently I noticed this Black Swan Green novel and it sounded really great and so I've been wanting to read that as well, and I was really lucky to notice the book in the sale section, I'm really happy about it It seems like an easier read. And though I haven't read The Perks of Being a Wall Flower yet (I want to!) the blurb reminded me of it. Oh almost forgot your question about Jane Eyre: I've read it once, just before I started uni. I read it in Finnish and was really happy to notice it happened to be on one of our English lit courses that semester, what a coincidence. I really liked the novel and I really enjoyed The Eyre Affair as well. I've been wanting to reread both JE and TEA for ages but because I hate the beginning part of JE (the awful time she had at her relatives and her school before she got to Rocherster's) I can't get around to the latter part which I love. I've started reading it so many times but always grow annoyed by the beginning. Now that I have the book in Finnish I'll be able to read the first part a lot quicker and get to the juicier bits Haha by the way, I found money in the Jane Eyre copy No, unfortunately no big cash stash, only 10 pennies, the smallest coin there is, and it's not even a valid currency any more, not since 2002 or so
  12. Sorry I haven't been able to answer your posts on my thread earlier, I've been really busy for the last week. Indeed, I felt indifferent to the story as well. As for the characters, I hated most of them and couldn't begin to understand them. And I certainly have no idea why it has such a massive impact on other readers Well I'm glad you always enjoy it Noll I did like By now you've finished the book I hear, and it seems like you enjoyd the ending as well, I'm glad there was at least something good about the novel for the two of us
  13. I bought these today (mainly from charityshops and secondhand bookshops, the last 3 are from a sale in a bookstore): Karin Slaughter: Blindsighted Stieg Larsson: The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (in Swedish) Vicki Myron: Dewey: A Small Town, a Library and the World's Most Beloved Cat (had to buy the book again because I gave the one I previously bought to my friend as a birthday pressie) Geraldine Brooks: Nine Parts of Desire - The Hidden World of Islamic Women Azar Nafisi: Reading Lolita in Teheran (this is the book that I'm most happy about, along with Black Swan Green) Tess Gerritsen: The Sinner Anni Polva:
  14. Okay Kylie, list coming up soon in my blog.
  15. Well, it's a two-digit number I have to say. I can't remember where I'm at right now, but I'm thinking when I'll add my new purchases 100 won't be too far away  I just hope I don't reach it yet! I'm really glad you enjoyed Sweetheart! Do you think you're going to read the third novel in the series? I have to say it wasn't as good as the first two, but an okay read anyway. I hope you enjoy Push! I had a happy time in the bookstores yesterday, I'm just fretting to list the books I bought. I've also read more of Helter Skelter.
  16. Glad you enjoyed it, hope Laundry Fairy enjoys it as well I love it how you both read books and can swap them and know what the other would like and should read!
  17. It's definitely a tough read, right from the get-go. The movie's hard to watch too but the book is definitely worse in that respect. I watched the movie just last night, it was pretty great but perhaps not as great as I'd hoped. Let's see if you can spot the two rather famous names who are in the movie, playing smaller roles. I would never have noticed them if I hadn't known they'd be in the movie I hope you enjoy the book, and have some Kleenex close by, just in case! Oooh, The Book Thief, that's on awesome read I hope you like it! I've read about 150 pages of Helter Skelter so far, still very gripping. Not as terrifying as before. I'm going to continue reading it today and then later today I'm going to go to a couple of charityshops and secondhand bookshops
  18. Well I don't particularly enjoy a customer infront of me paying their purchases with the smallest coins, especially if I'm in a hurry and there aren't any other cashiers around, but it's still money and money's still good in stores so there's not a whole lot of reason in resenting it. I pay in small coins myself sometimes, but I usually look around to see that there aren't people behind me in line so I won't take their time.
  19. I wouldn't have recognised her if I hadn't known she's in the movie! And even knowing it took me really long to recognise that it was her playing the welfare lady. I really loved Carey's performance, I was really pleasantly surprised. Lenny Kravitz is also in the movie and I wouldn't have recognised him either if I hadn't read the casting bill on imdb.com. I hope you enjoy the movie!
  20. I've noticed this years ago, they always used to go to commercials but when they showed the series in Finland there were no commercials and they'd just go on with the show and make the same announcements as they did just before going to commercials. I asked my friend who's been to USA for an exchange year and she said that's another commercial break and they've just cut out the commercials off the show in Finland. Here we used to have like three commercial breaks for 40-50 minute shows and one break for 20-30 minute shows but now there are new regulations since the beginning of this year so no there's more I think.
  21. I just watched Precious with BF today, it was a good movie but I don't think it was exceptional, I certainly expected more of it. I'm recommending the book though!
  22. Hello Denise and welcome to the forum!
  23. Hello Corina and welcome to the forum!
  24. Hello there and welcome to the forum! If you like thrillers, have you tried Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme -series? They're pretty darn good
  25. All right My friend just read the blurb and thought the game was the whole deal.
