I've started reading Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones, which the lovely Frankie gave me for Christmas. I got into it straight way and have read more than 40 pages. I'll have limited time for reading in the next week or so, but I'm sure I'll be making time to read this.
Yeeeeee-haw!
-
I got another book in the mail from Kylie!
Maybe The Devil was my Bday present and today's was my Christmas present? I don't know, but I'm mighty happy and grateful for my news books! Thank you Kylie ever so much!!!
I got Skippy Dies by Paul Murray, which has been on my wishlist since 2010. As it just so happens, I was in Australia, living with Kylie, when I saw this book at a bookstore or somewhere and read the blurb and added the title to my wishlist. I've been wanting to read it for ages! And now I have my very own copy

I'm just like you, I always save the best thing for last too! It can be a bit silly in the case of books, but I totally get where you're coming from
.
It's really silly because of course the number of books one buys for oneself will always be far bigger than the number of books one is given as gifts, so if one saves all the gift books till last, as the best ones, one will never get to them
It's really such a stupid habit.
But one other thing which is why one tends to read the not-so-important books first: For a few years now I'm always not knowing when I have to move again, so having to move is always at the back of my mind and when I move, I wish to have as few books as possibly because books are heavy and take space. And I don't want to give away my gift books! So I try and read the ones I've gotten myself first so I can then get rid of them if they are not good enough for a re-read.
I received my fine-point colored pens in the mail yesterday and will be getting the journal today! I bought a black one. I'm not one for bright colors but I know if I get a second journal I might venture out and get a pink one
.
Oh yay, that's awesome! I bet you can't wait for the mail
I'm really not one for bright colors myself, usually, but the only colors available online were pink and red so I went for pink. But I do like the pink now... I love it very much! But I think pretty much all the Leuchtturm 1917 colors are beautiful... I think if I'd gone to the bookstore and seen them all, I would've had a very difficult time choosing one. So in a way I got lucky that I had fewer options. I might still be standing at the bookstore, choosing
"Sorry Boss, I can't make it to work today... Gotta choose a notebook color!"
When you get started, do post pictures in the BuJo thread if you like!
I hope you will have a ton of fun with it
I hope you enjoy Devil in the White City! I've been hearing good things about that book for years and have it on my wish list as well.
I have a feeling I will love the book
Let's see which one of us gets to it first!
-
Thanks to you, Frankie, I've been sucked into the world of bullet journaling I ordered a Leuchtturm 1917 from Amazon last night and some colored pens. Can't wait to start!
Ahhhahaah!
I hope the delivery's really quick and that you get to BuJoing soon!
What color is yours? Ooh I hope you will like it
Yay! I hope you get to it but no pressure! I have a mental list of a few I want to get to this year, some of those ones I have been gifted as I really feel I would like to read those sooner so I can offer feedback to the givers!
I feel the same way about books that have been given to me as presents!
But also I think of them as the best candy and I always leave the best candy in the packet for last
But that's really silly because who knows how much time one has and all. Why not just indulge in the best ones first!
I've managed to not buy any books yet too, 21 days! That makes me happy, though whether I will feel the same when there are gaps on my bookcase I'm not sure! My plan is to read enough of my TBR so that I can swap them with the books on my Read bookcase, there is a way to go to achieve that though!!
21 days is a long time! And by now it's 23 days! We're doing so well
Although.... I got a book in the mail today!
But I didn't get it for myself, so it doesn't count. This book is a Birthday/Christmas present from my dear Kylie!! I had no idea what she would get me... Well, a book most likely, but which book, I had no idea!
Inside was The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson!!
It's a book that's been on my wishlist for ages! It's a true crime book and it's on the Rory Gilmore reading list, so that's twice the excitement!
I'm totally psyched about this book, thank you Kylie ever so much!!
And I love the edition, too!

I got a Pigma Microne today, I'll have to test it and see what it's like. It should be a permanent marker and it should not ink through!
Could you not use colouring pencils frankie? Would be a softer effect? Alternatively would gel pens work, you'd have to find the softer tipped ones (fibre tipped?) not the ballpoint ones but might work.
I really dislike writing with coloring pencils!
And for some reason I thought gel pens are not permanent? Anyway, I might have to give gel pens a go if the Pigma Microne doesn't work. Or then I'll just use a pen and that's that.
I am loving mine but still only using black pen and being functional! I have all sorts of lists in there, health info, meal ideas, books and films, work stuff...so handy having it all in one place!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with being functional!
I think after the initial excitement passes, I might get lazy and start doing the same as you and just use one color for everything and not make it fancy in any way. So far I've loved doing doodles and headers and whatnots, but I think a totally functional and minimalistic BuJo would look great, too!
I'm so pleased you're loving your BuJo!!

I went on a cruise yesterday, it was a 25 years of Electric Dance Music -themed cruise so not really my scene, but I did have fun! I don't remember when I last danced this much... I got to see Darude, in the front row!
-
Whatever next?!
I have no idea. I'm just glad she's waving her hand and not, for example, twerking
Well done for resisting the temptation to buy a book .. very impressive
It was hard but I did it!
How is the bullet journaling coming on? Hope you're enjoying it
I love bullet journaling very much but I'm struggling with finding the right sort of marker to use! I previously used my old ones but then discovered they are not water-proof... I then bought new ones that are water-proof and that did not bleed through the paper on which I tested them at the shop (they had a notebook for testing), but when I got home and tried them on my Leuchtturm 1917, they bled through
Today I got new markers that are water-proof and thin enough, but they smudged!!
Water-proof my ass. SIGH!!! (I'd love to use my pens, as I prefer them to markers and I always write with a pen. But they leave marks on the paper... Meaning they leave press marks.
I googled what Finns are using for their BuJos and found a brand that's supposed to be good. So keep your fingers crossed...!

I was discussing a book I got from chaliepud, in her reading log and I thought it might be a good idea to set up a priority reading list for 2017. Now, my mojo's not been very reliable in the past year or two, so I'm not going to swear by the priority reading list, but I thought having one might inspire me to go for the titles I need to get to sooner rather than later.
I've been rather good so far this year: I haven't bought any books (I'm not counting the Hand Lettering book I bought, because that doesn't count towards the TBR pile and it's not an actual 'book book', and I've not reserved any new books from the library, and I've taken the books I've started but not liked back there. I'm slowly but surely getting rid of all the library loans at my place, which means that soon enough I'll be able to start with my TBR
The book that's first going on the priority reading list is Human Traces by Sebastian Faulks. (Again, this is no promise, but who knows!)

That's a tricky question... I like my stand-alones, but then if the book is fabulous, why would I not love to read more on the subject and the characters in the next installment
I think I like stand-alones and series equally, but with series it's always a question of whether I'm able to remember all the things that have happened in the previous novels in the series. Like with the Sookie Stackhouse series. I'd read first first ten or so books, and then maybe a year later I got the next book in the series and started to read it, but I was struggling remembering some of the minor characters... I knew I had to re-read the series before I could really get to the book. So that's frustrating.
-
The perfectionist in me is getting frustrated... At first I used my Stabilo markers as I like them, but then I realized that they are not water-proof. I prefer pens to markers by a billionfold, but pens leave marks on the paper used on Leuchtturm 1917. I mean marks as in the paper gets pressed down where one's used a pen. So I decided to buy water-proof markers. I found some, which didn't 'shine through' on the other side when I was testing them at the bookstore. But when I got home, they do shine through the paper used in Leuchtturm 1917
Today I got some other markers from another store, thin enough and they're 'light-fast waterproof ink'. Well, there are four markers in the packet, and one of them (the thinnest one) dropped its tip, and now I've discovered that they smudge on the pages. Water-proof my ass.
This is getting really annoying! Need I haul my BuJo to bookstores and other shops and try each and every marker on it just to be on the safe side?!
Edit: I wonder if I could take the markers I bought today back to the store (I have the receipt) and tell them that they are not water-proofed and thus I want my money back? They were only 7€ and I'm not one to complain usually but I've bought so many markers that I'm willing to go back some day and tell the people to sod off and give me my money back
Edit2: I've just googled Finnish BuJos because I wanted to see where the Finns have gotten their markers and I now know which markers are permanent and the best and I know where I can get them. I'll have a think re: whether I want to invest in yet another set of markers or whether I should just go with pens.

I hope you have a wonderful reading year in 2017, pontalbs!

Liver casserole and napa/nappa cabbage/Chinese cabbage/whatever you call it. Good stuff!
-
Thank you. I will take the compliment gratefully.
Mission accomplished

I finished it today, and thought it was charming. It's not a surprise to find it's so short, I read it on my Kindle, and couldn't remember how thick it was when I bought it for you, but it whizzed by in just a couple of hours.
Yay for liking it!
Jänet, not that you need any more encouragement as you've got the book already and have it on good authority - chesil - that it's good, but I'd wholeheartedly second the recommendation
-
Well done, Mrs Baker! And Ray Bradbury

Oops, tried to be too clever with the quoting frankie, but I'm sure you get the gist!
I saw this and thought what is chalie talking about, the quotes are fine, and normal and not any cleverer than usual...? And then I remembered seeing you in Ben's thread, reiterating Ben's request for fixing one's quotes
You are certainly smart enough to follow the storyline and I know the subject matter will interest you. Faulks is very wordy but I found it so compelling that the story flew by!
Thanks for having the confidence in me
I'll try!! I should make a priority reading list for the year... That's actually a good idea! I'll put Human Traces on it. That's not a promise to read it, though, but I'll put it on the priority list so at least there's a chance that I'll get to it. My mojo's been mostly okay with thrillers these days, nothing more than that
I don't actually watch it for exactly that reason!
I can totally understand that!
Of course, though I suspect they tend to film out of normal working hours. Jojo and I are there Tuesday for her physio so we will keep our eyes peeled!
And then of course should something happen
I'm not sure any Vet can deal with Obi these days!
Obi is one of a kind! Oh that reminds me!! I saw an Australian Cattle Dog today! It was gorgeous
But it was a bit odd... I would think that those dogs cost quite a lot of money, especially over here, more so than other, more common dogs. So I was a bit surprised to see someone who was drunk at 10 AM walk the dog. (I had to go groceryshopping at a specific place for work, and alcoholics and drug addicts hang out next to the place, so I see them every time I'm there.... I don't mean these exact folks, because I haven't seen that dog before. I've seen one other dog before... He's gorgeous! And such a well behaved dog. I always want to pet him but I don't know how he'd react to strange people coming over to say hi... )
I do love it, the animals should be here in the Summer, I doubt I'll be working with them but I'm sure I will be able to get more than my share of cuddles!
Yeah I wouldn't expect you to get to work with them but I'm sure you'll be able to go and say hellooooo
Oh boy you're going to have such fun!!
-
I think we're pretty much all crazy here!
I don't think we would like it any other way
Thank you everyone for the lovely comments (although all I did was follow a video and some instructions
).
I'm sure there are a lot of people who could watch the video for days on end and who would not be able to produce anything remotely resembling the Kindle case
-
I remember Miguel Ferrer mostly from Twin Peaks. RIP
-
I haven't posted in this thread for awhile, so lots of updates! And I really need to start a 2017 reading thread...
Yeah you do....
After that I read and finished A Man Called Ove, which was a Christmas gift I received from Weave and found it delightful!
I'm glad you liked it!
I read it a few years ago and loved it

I finished my second novel of the year, The Twenty-Three by Linwood Barclay.
-
2. The Twenty-Three by Linwood Barclay
(Promise Falls Trilogy Book #3)
Amazon: The day begins like any other Saturday - a shower, coffee, breakfast. But suddenly, all hell breaks loose in the town of Promise Falls. People are dying in the street - the hospital and emergency services are overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Is it mass food poisoning, a virus, or something more sinister? [...]
Detective Barry Duckworth is already investigating two murders and an explosion at the town's drive-in. He starts to wonder if these crimes and the new attacks are connected to the mysterious incidents in Promise Falls involving the number twenty-three.
But who is sending these deadly messages, and how can they be stopped?
Thoughts: The finishing novel in the trilogy! I'm so going to miss reading about the people and getting shocked about how everything's always going wrong where they live
Once again, Barclay did what he does so well and kept my mojo going. Compared to the last two months in 2016, I was flying through the pages of this one! Barclay writes very solid and suspenseful thrillers, and I like his characters.
The book did bring everything nicely together, and I was shocked by one of the big reveals, but to my bigger shock, I'd sussed out the last one. And I never usually do!
I've enjoyed the trilogy, but I'm also looking forward to another Barclay stand-alone. I'll have to go and see if I've missed one of the previous ones, or whether I'll have to wait for him to publish a whole new one.
4/5
On another note: my second read book of the year! I've already read double the number of books I read in I December!
-
Wow! He never seems to age, does he? He still has such a boyish face. I love his smile.
Boyish is the word I would use most definitely
He never ages!
-
I've also bought The Reader on the 6:27 by Jean-Paul Didierlaurent as it was on the Kindle Daily Deal today
I loved that one!
I hope you'll like it!
I finished it last night. Pretty good, but I found it a bit too long.
Good enough for me
I have 80 pages left of The Twenty-Three by Linwood Barclay.

The heaviness comes and goes.
It's not a book that you can read quickly, because so much is going on that needs to be taken in. I'm going to read more this morning, but I keep getting distracted by all sorts of things on the internet.
Shoo, shoo!! Nothing to see here, go away and read the book!
