  1. As this thread has come up again, and as I've decided to do the Around the World reading challenge, I think A Suitable Boy might be a fine novel for India. I just wish the book wasn't so long!
  2. Those would be really annoying, yes. I hope you never have to resort to them! Yes, 10£ isn't really all that much and changing it probably wouldn't make much difference... I'm glad to hear that you've had a fair response I think years ago when we had more members coming on here way more frequently, it was easier to make the sufficient amount of money. Now it might be trickier as we don't have as many regular members Long live the forum!
  3. Oooh, I really hope you enjoy this one! I loved it! I'm still reading The Couple Next Door, I've not gotten past 50 pages or so. I don't blame the book, I've just not been a reading mode
  4. There's a literary event in Helsinki in May, and a few foreign authors will be attending. I was thinking I might read some of their books, to know what they are talking about, and that would also get me reading a few book off the Around the World -challenge I mean in case I'm going to buy tickets to the event. The authors will be Orhan Pamuk, Petina Gappah, Garth Greenwell (although I probably wouldn't choose his book as there's so much to choose from for the US), Laurent Binet and Andrew Michael Hurley (plus some Swedish and Finnish authors). I'm most interested in reading HHhH and The 7th Function of Language by Laurent, and Petina Gappah. I've already reserved a book by each author from the library I wasn't going to reserve books, but as it's for a literary event, I'm allowing it Edit: Okay I'm definitely going at least on Friday, as I just told a friend about it, as his total man crush / Finnish fave author will be showing up at the event, and my friend's also visiting from Stockholm that particular weekend! Yay, I don't have to go alone, I have a book reading friend to go with me!! Edit: A further note re: Around the World -challenge: as I want to get to my TBR this year more than in the past few years, I think in some cases I'll choose a suitable book for a specific country if I have something special enough in my bookcase. I should have a few different things... Like A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth for India.
  5. New Moon's on TV. I never watched it... but now I'm drawn to it.
  6. The first episode of the new season of Cold Feet
  7. Kate Bush. (Watched Pariah and have been listening to the soundtrack and then to the songs of Tamar-Kali and she did a cover of Running up the Hill and that got me to listen to KB) Edit: Found a new favorite song by her: Breathing. Edit: Oh my! Have just listened to Hammer Horror for the first time, and watched the music video as well! I thought it was brilliant, but oh boy, the ending was horrid! Edit: Okay, just listened to and watched Wow for the first time. KB has amazing charisma
  8. I'm joining you with a lovely cranberry long drink!
  9. Because of something that happened earlier today, and because of an article I read the other day, I've now thought about starting the Around the World -challenge which some of you have been doing on here. It's not an easy challenge as there are many, many books to read, and it might sometimes be difficult to choose what to read, but I'd like to give it a try. I hope it will help me to get back my mojo in the sense that I'd finally be able to read something other than modern (light) literature and thrillers. I miss reading books that are meatier and have more depth. It's going to be a big long challenge, and I won't ever put a deadline on the whole thing, because I don't want the pressure. I just hope it might steer me in the direction of books I might otherwise not read. And all the other good reasons to do it
  10. I must be confusing you with someone else then, because I really thought you weren't a big fan of psych thrillers Or maybe it was some other genre and I got things mixed up! Actually the latter seems more probable a scenario... Sorry, my mistake!
  11. Me, too! I honestly didn't probably expect to like it much if at all, but wow. I still miss the characters! Well, in your defense I'm just so happy that I read the book. I can't thank you enough!
  12. Something happened when I was previously posting, so here's the rest of my comments to Kylie's post on my thread! I dare say both are/will be great! I can't wait to read the book I can totally sympathize with that scenario When I first saw the Leuchtturm 1917 section at the bookshop, I was like, wow.... I'd already bought mine (as I thought they didn't have any at the bookshop and so got mine at an online notebook shop, which claimed to have only a few pink ones on store and red ones. But I've told everyone this before, actually...) but I was swooning over them and wanted to buy all of them Well, all of the dotted ones. I just love the dots on the notebook! It's so handy!! I don't think I want to use other types of notebooks anymore Edit: I almost forgot, having to write this a second time because of the mix-up with having to post again: if you ever want a LT1917 of some other color, at any point, just let me know and I can get it for you (if they have them in store at the local bookshop)! I mean should you not have that color available over there. Don't hesitate to ask! Hey, I've send you many presents very late, very very late. We both do it, so it's really no hassle and no grievance!! And I never got you anything for your Birthday last year. I meant to, but I never got around to sending the package! So please, don't beat yourself up about anything when I've been just as late I don't want anyone to stress about these things! A group read on the Skippy book would be great! Cancel it NOW, woman! Indeed I went to a cafe the other day and it was a doggy-friendly cafe and one dog came in (he was actually one of the employee's), and he was soooo cute! Well, both were enjoyable and were about bookshops and people who loved books or to some extent, people who got to enjoy books. However, I think the AJ Fikry was a bit more literal. In the sense that I think there were more characters to the Veronica Henry book and a lot of the action took place somewhere else besides the bookshop. And I think I added the AJ Fikry book to my 1001 Books list, whereas I don't think I would add the Veronica Henry book to the list. But both were really, really enjoyable
  13. I do dare think I will! You very often are =D Yay for having you add something I've read on your wishlist! I feel like it's been a while =D I hope you're enjoying your BuJo! I hope you find a copy soon and that you will like it a lot!
  14. One of my favorite authors, Linwood Barclay, has written a short story/book some years ago, and at the moment, I've read all of his novels but not the short one, and I've been wondering if I should give it a go, even though I do like longer books... But you are much more into this sort of thing... Like physical wonderful stuff of the earth. I'm not! I don't know how to explain it. But I should just read the first few pages and see what you mean and then go with it. Right? I'll try it someday for sure. Yay, you loved it! I just hope that I'm not one of those who would think it's pretentious. As intimidated as I am by the book, I do hope to like it Exactly. This place rules But the idea of the copy+paste job haunts me... I'm still in the middle of culling my wishlist. Me too One could look at pictures of BuJos for hours... And I now can't walk into a bookshop and NOT take a look at what they have on offer, to see if they have any cool washi tape. I also always take a look at their markers... Even though I usually go to the same freaking bookshop and the markers they had there the last time are the ones they still have there, and nothing else How did you remember that?!? Yes, nice-ten-rice-cows
  15. I don't remember turning right, but I do get what you mean. Oh boy!! Two rooms?!? Was it an anniversary or is it just getting bigger, what with more donations? Or did they not have as many cardboard boxes underneath, waiting to be opened and set up on the table as the table was cleared of some books? Oh boy! Are you sure you don't have to go again THIS year? Nina George The Little Paris Bookshop I'm pretty sure Frankie didn't like this, but I couldn't resist it anyway! I do hope you like it! It would make me sad to be right and have you not like the book! As you've now bought a copy.... Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe The Sorrows of Young Werther I've wanted this for ages! I was just talking about this book with my Boss the other day! I've yet to read it myself, though. Great find! Herman Koch The Dinner I hope you like this one! Andrey Kurkov The President’s Last Love Yay for Kurkov! Love this author. Yay, more Kurkov! Marcel Proust Swann’s Way #1: In Search of Lost Time Gulp. This is the first volume I've bought. It looks brand new and is the edition I've always wanted. I guess I now need to buy the rest before they become more difficult to find! I got mine at the book fair, too Joanna Rakoff My Salinger Year I bought this because Kay and Sari recently discussed it on the forum. That's all it took! I'm so jealous!! I saw a copy at the bookshop last week and almost bought it Great haul, babe!
  16. I think this is the first movie I've seen this year: Pariah. Really liked it!
  17. I'm watching a movie called Pariah which I caught by accident. I'm really liking it!
  18. Ladies of London
  19. Ah, okay Kylie, I did the ink test for the markers I bought earlier and even though I now gave them plenty of time to dry, they didn't pass the test! Not permanent I'm annoyed and betrayed! Edit: Aha. I took another look at the markers and it says they are water resistant, not waterproof. So maybe there's a difference between those, even though I thought it was supposed to be the same thing. Here's a picture to demonstrate that I found online. So, water resistant resists water in that you can still read what's been written, but it's still getting everything smudged? Well I've learned a very valuable lesson today!!
  20. Yes I'm sure it's usually more uplifting, but this episode featured the death of the woman (and even the Gogglebox people said they were surprised it was shown on TV), and also some politicians doing a nasty and someone getting sued for charges of paedophilia. That seemed like quite a lot for one night! And I only watched maybe 30 minutes, tops! I turned to Distraction instead, having recently talked about the show to someone and wanting to see if there were episodes on youtube. Oh man this show is hilarious This is too much!
  21. Okay I just decided to watch a random British episode of Gogglebox and I was quite enjoying it, but then there was the episode of 999 What's Your Emergency or something like that that they were watching and there was an 86 year old man whose wife had gone unconcious and she died and they'd been together for 66 years and it was so sad and I don't want to watch the British Gogglebox anymore
  22. Well done, Lau_Lou! You've had a great start and so you know how to continue, and I'm sure you now have the sufficient motivation and inspiration Keep it up! Wow, that's great I'd be too lazy for that! Now that I've conquered my flues and next week should be warmer than this week, I really should try and get into some sort of exercise routine. I really do want to get more fit. I just get really lazy when I don't have a friend with whom to go for a walk or something.
  23. Take care, Ben!
  24. You only started about 2 months ago?! So cool! I'm really happy you're enjoying the series so much! I hope you have a lot of fun with the Rory Gilmore reading challenge, too!
