    Beloved of buskers everywhere!

I had to google the word 'busker'. I confess I don't know for sure what you mean! :D Do you mean a lot of buskers play that Oasis song I mentioned? I don't think I've ever heard it played by a busker. Then again, it's colder over here and so maybe we have fewer buskers over here. Interesting!

Also, (copied from What's Up In January):

I've started making progress on my one real new year's resolution (is it a resolution if it's not difficult?) which I only realised earlier this week I wanted to do. Based off the extremely popular bullet journals around, my underwhelming experiences with various mindfulness and gratitude journal apps, and my knowledge that gratitude is the one area of mindfulness where I still really fall down, I have invented - the gratitude visual/bullet/sketchnotes journal! Yeah, it's a blend.

I think this is a fabulous idea! :smile2:  Great pages you've done already! :smile2:

I also have to get my next lot of meds sorted this month for my anxiety/depression. I've been on one dose for a year now, and gradually my mood is declining again. Not sure do I need a higher dose or what. Maybe I should start going to counselling but that's a 200 euro commitment a month, it's just so much money.

It really is a lot of money :(  Even though it would go towards a pretty freaking good cause!

It's funny, all those years ago when I was unemployed for 2.5 years, I produced tons of art and was really creative. Now that I've been in employment for 2.5 years, I don't want to draw, I'm struggling to keep up my cross-stitch, I just read, watch tv or play video games. My creativity is pretty much dead. You'd think financial security would make me happy, but I think all is does is relieve one aspect of anxiety/depression, which is immediately replaced by the depressing tedium of spending most of my life doing a job simply to pay bills.

I know what you mean. I've stopped doing a whole lot of things since I got employed. Now it's a miracle if I get any -real- stuff done at all. However, I think you are doing more than you give yourself credit for. You've started your gratitude journal, and you are playing video games which you love, and you are spending quality time with your partner! You've also managed to read a lot of books this year already! :)

I wish you a very happy reading year in 2018, Nollaig! :)

I think a three year slump is enough. I need to get back on track! I'm going to aim for 15 books this year, which is not as many as pre 2015 but would be a step in the right direction.

I second the motion, a three year slump is enough indeed! Here's to a brilliant reading year in 2018, Andrea!! :clapping::readingtwo:    I hope life's treating you well these days :smile2:

  4. This morning I was really sad to hear that John Mahoney had died :( He was a great actor. I loved him in Frasier, and in the movies I've seen him, mainly Dan in Real Life, She's the One, Striking Distance and Barton Fink

    Rest in peace :(

We must think so alike on this sort of thing!  Titus Groan was my back-up choice, in case you'd asked me to change my challenge to you!  For me, it's a great choice - I've had the trilogy sat on my shelves for several years and never quite got around to it, always meaning to (especially after it was shown on British TV some years ago - I never watched it because I wanted to read it first!).  It's a lovely set as well - published by the Folio Society, with lots of superbly atmospheric illustrations by Peter Harding.  Can't understand why it's stayed untried for so long, but this should be just the kickstart I need.  Thank you!

What are the odds?! We have some sort of psychic connection - or at least very similar tastes - when it comes to this particular challenge! I'm really glad to hear my choice pleaseth you much! :smile2: I have great expectations for the novel myself and I have a feeling the book will not disappoint. I hope it will be the same for you! :)

No problems - the challenge lasts all year! - and thank you.

I know but I don't want to leave people hanging when everyone else is picking books left and right! :D

Sorry for being later than what I said I would, but I have a book for you now. Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake! I've started it myself and loved what I read but something came up and I couldn't carry on reading. I hope you will like it very much! :)

Thank you @frankie, but as I've set myself the additional challenge of reading the books I challenge people with, as well as those I am challenged to read, I'd be grateful  if you could find me another book on my list, as Dead Wake is therefore already part of my challenge.  Alternatively, if that's a problem for any reason, I'll change my challenge to you.  I'm hoping it's not, as I do have rather a lot of books on my To Read list!

Ah, I see! I'm sorry if you have stated in an earlier post that you'd be reading the books suggested to others yourself, because I then must have missed it! I've had a lot on my plate this past month and I've not been able to spend much time on here and so I've not read each and every post in this thread with total concentration! But I now understand and I am of course comfortable with choosing another book for you. I'm rather busy today but I will choose another book for you tomorrow or Monday at the latest, if that's alright with you? :)

  8. My suggested challenge reads:

willoyd: Dead Wake by Erik Larson  -  I have this book on my TBR, too, and it's supposed to be good! I hope you will enjoy it :)

Madeleine: Bleak House by Charles Dickens   -  I hope you will like this one by Dickens! I've not read it myself yet, but I've been wanting to for some time now! :)

chesilbeachMiddlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides  -  This is one of my all time favorites. An interesting topic and such a great story. Meaty book!  :)

karen.d: Cujo by Stephen King -  This one is one of my favorites by King. Very captivating, and scary.

Alexi The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay by Michael Chabon  -  A great story, one that I didn't want to put down! I hope you will enjoy it :)'

chaliepud: Cannery Row by John Steinbeck -  This was a bit of a quirky read, I really liked it! I hope you will too :)

Little Pixie  The Book Thief by  Markus Zusak   - This is what I would consider a modern classic. It's a great one! :)

More time for reading: East of Eden by John Steinbeck   -  I have this book on my  TBR and I really want to read it soon, too! I hope it's great and that you will like it! :)

I think that's everyone!  Let me know if I've forgotten someone! I'm a bit tired at the moment.

I'm really getting excited about this! :D Happy reading everyone!

I challenge you to read   The Hobbit- by Tolkien, J.R.R. I love this book, I hope you enjoy it too.

Thanks Karen! :)  I hope to like it, too! And it might get me to finally read Lord of the Rings, too :D

Hey frankie! I challenge you to read Red Dog by Louis De Bernieres as I think you’ll love it! I was going to choose Human Traces but I do feel you need to WANT to read that one, so you’ll do it when you’re ready. :)

Haa, I did wonder if you'd choose that one! :D But I understand your logic. Thanks for Red Dog! It ought to be great! :smile2:

Hi @frankie, I'd like to challenge you to Miss Hargreaves by Frank Baker.  I haven't seen this one before but I like old books being republished and this one sounds like a good read. :)

    I don't know why I haven't read that book yet! It's such a beautiful book! :smile2: Thanks!

I wonder why? Only because there looked to be some really good non-fiction books on that list in your 2017 thread.  There are also some good looking books still on the list of course.

It's mainly because I've had real problems getting into any books in the past few months and I fear that if I start to read a non-fiction book, it just won't stick. I think a book with a plot might have a bigger chance to hold my interest! Also, some of the non-fiction books are the kind that one will enjoy more if they are dipped into every now and then, and not read in one go. Like my copy of Introduction to Psychology

I'm going to stick with one of the few non-fiction kept, which is Erik Larson's Dead Wake, a book that I have on my TBR shelves, and one that looks very promising, especially having enjoyed Isaac's Storm a lot.

What are the odds! I've just been to see your TBR list and I chose Dead Wake for you! :D It's because I have a copy of the book as you well know, and I hear it's a great one!

I've still to go through the lists of other members taking part in this, I'm getting back to that after I've submitted this post.

  10. My list for the reading challenge can be found through this link. The post is on the first page of my new reading log of 2018. You can choose any of the books, as is the plan of the challenge :)  I just made a separate list for the Finnish books and the foreign ones. I left out any novels that are part of a series, and I also left out a lot of non-fiction.

I'll try and post my own suggestions to each one of you in the next few days! :smile2:

    Steve

The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson - my favourite fantasy series. I've banged the drum about it quite enough by now. It's like Marmite. Seven out of the ten books in the series are right at the top of my list: Gardens of the Moon / Deadhouse Gates / Memories of Ice / House of Chains / Midnight Tides / The Bonehunters / Toll the Hounds.

The Belgariad - David Eddings - this was the series that introduced me to the fantasy genre. I loved it when I was 14 or 15. Not sure how I'd feel about it if I read it again now, but I have to include it here.

    On to the rest:
