  1. I just finished the second book by Kate Morton, The Forgotten Garden. (Morton's first book was The House at Riverton.) It was wonderful!!!! This Australian author is becoming more and more popular with each book! grammyva
  2. I just finished reading Adriana Trigiani's new book and loved it! And what I like most about it is the descriptive language regarding food and shoe making and sense of place (New York and Italy and more. (Valentine and her grandmother carry on the family business of making custom wedding shoes and her new love, Roman, is a chef and owner of an Italian restaurant.) Trigiani is also the author of the Big Stone Gap series that take place in Virginia as well as several standalones. All good reads!
  3. Laura Moriarty is a fairly new author I like. I've read her first two books, The Center of Everything and The Rest of Her Life and just saw mention of her newest novel coming in August 2009, While I'm Falling, so placed an advance request for that book at my local library. I'm anxious to read it! Her books are very popular with book groups, too. Grammyva www.bookclubdujour.com
  4. The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks remains the saddest book I've ever read. I read it in bed and tried not to wake up my husband as I had tears running down my cheeks! Grammyva
  5. I'm looking forward to Kate Jacob's new book, Comfort Food. Hope it will be as good as The Friday Night Knitting Club! -Grammyva "Assisted by a handsome up-and-coming chef, Oliver, Gus invites a select group to take an on-air cooking class. But instead of just preaching to the foodie masses, she will teach regular people how to make rich, sensuous meals - real people making real food. Gus decides to bring a vibrant cast of friends and family on the program: Sabrina, her fickle daughter; Troy, Sabrina's ex-husband; Anna, Gus's timid neighbor; and Carmen, Gus's pompous and beautiful competitor at the Cooking Channel. And when she begins to have more than collegial feelings for her sous-chef, Gus realizes that she might be able to rejuvenate not just her professional life, but her personal life as well."--BOOK JACKET.
  6. This afternoon I finished reading Katie Fforde's latest book, Wedding Season, and it was great! I love reading books that take place in England and love the vocabulary and customs and this book did not disappoint me. Perhaps I enjoyed this one so much since my granddaughter was married last Summer and I could really relate to all the planning etc.! I've read all Fforde's books and they keep getting better and better! Grammyva
  7. I just finished this book by Catherine O'Flynn tonight and really enjoyed it! I look forward to more of her work. For those who like to read award winners........What Was Lost was the winner of the 2007 Costa First Novel Award. It was also short listed for The Guardian First Book Award, and long listed for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize. Grammyva
  8. Did you know...... Jean Plaidy, Philippa Carr, Victoria Holt plus more are pseudonyms of Eleanor Hibbert? She was a very prolific author!! Grammyva
  9. John Grisham is noted mainly for his legal thrillers, but he has written several books that don't fall into that genre. A Painted House, for one, as well as Bleachers, Skipping Christmas, Playing for Pizza, and a non fiction book titled The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town. Think that's all! Grammyva
  10. Just read in today's newspaper about a new film made from Harlan Coben's, Tell No One. I'm sure it will be good! This book was not part of his Myron Bolitar series and really made him more popular. Grammyva
  11. It's not as fast paced as I would like but it's moving along. I'm learning lots about the Impressionist movement in Paris and the different artists! It's interesting to read this fictionalized account of Renior's techniques as he painted this picture, too. A great book for those who love art!
  12. OOps! ILL stands for Interlibrary Loan and I ordered The Shifting Fog from another library through my local library. Had no idea it was the same book with a different title. I am confused as my library had The Shifting Fog on CD but not in print. Guess I'll cancel it and save them the work locating a copy for me. Thanks for the tip!
  13. I was not familiar with Kate Morton before reading about her books here! I've placed a hold on The House at Riverton, ordered The Shifting Fog on ILL, and will wait for The Forgotten Garden to become available. They all sound so good. Thanks for suggesting this author!
  14. When I read the first book in the Stephanie Plum series I thought "how crude" but funny, too! But when the second one came out, I read it and by then I was hooked. Think they are getting a little stale but......I keep on reading! I met Janet Evanovich at a book signing one time and she's as funny in person as her books! Grammyva
  15. My 26 year old granddaughter just bought it to read as she and her new husband went to Paris and a boat trip on the Seine for their honeymoon. She is in love with all things "Paris" now! Grammyva
  16. I just started reading Susan Vreeland's Luncheon of the Boating Party. It's getting lots of press right now and being read in lots of book clubs from what I hear. Grammyva
  17. Well, I have to say one of my favorite characters in mysteries happens to be Stephanie Plum from Janet Evanovich's series. Stephanie is a bounty hunter and these books are humorous and a little raunchy! Our local library has classified this series as mystery so guess this would work. I'm reading Fearless Fourteen now. grammyva
  18. I returned two books yesterday to my library and picked up four more that were on reserve for me. I get an average of 8 per month. BTW, I don't buy books except as gifts as I formerly worked at the library and I use it to the max! Grammyva
  19. My favorite person, after Rebus, is Elvis Cole in Robert Crais' series. He is so cool! (His Mother named him for her favorite singer and mine, Elvis!!) The stories take place in LA. I just got the latest book in the series from my library today so may have to put other books aside for this one! First book - The Monkey's Raincoat Latest book - Chasing Darkness Grammyva www.bookclubdujour.com
  20. I keep my reading list on Word divided by year and then by month. If I'm searching for a title, I try to remember the time of year I read it! I don't take time to annotate or write notes! Grammyva;)
  21. I am so excited today! I posted yesterday that the characters in Deborah Crombie's mysteries are some of my all time favorites and......just today I received a notice that her newest book is waiting for me to pickup at my local library! I must be psychic or something... Grammyva
  22. I love Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus, Robert Crais and his Elvis Cole, and Deborah Crombie's Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. (Elvis hangs out in LA and the others in the British Isles.) I've read everyone of their books featuring these characters plus most of their stand alones. Grammyva
  23. I have read everyone of Katie Fforde's novels and love them for their "sense of place" and happy endings! Sometimes have to wait a while for them to be published here in the USA but the wait is worth it! And then when the title is changed a person can be fooled into thinking they are getting a new book from Katie and it's one you've already read! Grammyva
  24. Hi! I'm new here and need some input from the collective group. I'm searching for the hottest "hand-sellers" in bookstores and libraries for 2008. Remember how The Red Tent, The Kite Runner, The Secret Life of Bees, and now Water for Elephants became popular just by word of mouth? What's really popular and "flying off the shelves" right now?? Thanks! Grammyva
