People who crowbar the word 'like' into every sentence e.g I was 'like' reading this book and it was 'like' brilliant...AAAAAAARGH.... and then to add insult to injury they all misguidedly talk as if they're from Australia and phrase everything as a question...AAAAAAARGH......

I too loved the book The Neverending Story, and as a result hated the film! Totally agree they shredded it.
If you liked that you might like The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly - I've raved about it on a few posts! A young boy finds himself in a world where fairy tales are real, though rather darker than the tales we grew up with.....
I would second 'The Book of Lost Things' as it's a simply brilliant quest novel with tinges of Monty Python. Unsettling, clever and darkly funny...

Yep- I only gave it about half an hour because the whole thing was pretty dreadful. No coherent narrative, woefully miscast and generally disappointing. Having seen a few other adaptations of this book no-one seems to get it quite right. It's a shame.....

I believe that 6 was much better than, say,4.
Completely disagree. I thought it was maybe the best adaptation I've seen and I think Keira Knightley to be a very talented actress.
Oh well, each to their own- are you her mum...sister...auntie?
hee hee!

I have a thrill for the unknown and can't imagine just reading what everyone else is reading or what's populist or fashionable. When I have joined the herd I've usually been sorely disappointed.... There's some absolute gems out there if you are brave enough to try them....

I've been tuning into this and am absolutely horrified that 25 000 people a day die of starvation when you see the number of lardy-arses in Britain and other affluent countries. I also have a big bug-bear about supermarkets and the endless choice of products- how many types of one product do you actually need and why is there this reliance on having certain foods all the year round? I think this programme is excellent, informative and shocking and it's a shame it's tucked away on BBC 2. Only trouble is that it's only really the people who care already that will be watching this type of programme and we're already trying to do our bit... Rant over...

Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead

The film adaptation of Chris Cleave's 'Incendiary' was dire, couldn't stand 'Atonement' (but Keira Knightley does tend to ruin everything she's in) and I was disappointed by 'Slumdog Millionaire' (unlike everyone else on the planet). Have a feeling of dread about the upcoming film version of 'Shantaram' (starring the one and only Johnny 'phew nobody's sussed how average I really am at this acting lark' Depp.....) unless the author is directly involved in the screenplay....fingers crossed....

I'm after a decent WW2 book, I'm really interested in the whole darker side of the war. Spies, espionage all the good stuff. Any suggestions?
Alan Furst is a great starting point with several books of this ilk and I can highly recommend David Downing's trilogy 'Zoo Station', 'Silesian Station' and 'Stettin Station'. You might like Henry Porter's 'Brandenburg' as well

Maybe you'll like the movie better
I admire your optimism Adam but, having seen the trailer, that old adage involving hot pins and eyes springs to mind...

Ooh this is a struggle as there's so much dross out there....
1. The Time Traveler's Wife
2. The Lovely Bones
3. Twilight and it's irksome sequels
4. We Need To Talk About Kevin
5. On Green Dolphin Street- Faulks on a really bad day...
Can I have more than 5 ?!!
I was enjoying that...

With the amount of reading and reviewing I do for my job and for fun it's quite difficult to find the time for re-reading books! I have re-read 'The Grapes of Wrath', 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Moby Dick' this year so far but with 200+ books waiting to be read the heat is on. But some books just so deserve to be read twice at least

They sound like it, I'll have to investigate. I love Schiller as a philosopher and Fennimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans" is one of my favourite books from childhood (plus let's face it, his title is pure genius).
I must say, as an Italian who rather enjoys the occasional Pirandello fix ("Six Characters in Search of an Author" being my undisputed favourite) I think I may have missed "Loveless Love"...! You wouldn't happen to know the original title, would you?
'Loveless Love' is a perfectly formed collection of 3 short stories by Pirandello- 'The Wave', 'The Signorina' and 'A Friend To The Wives' all dealing with unfulfilled and disturbing love...Enjoy!
