  1. I am on my 10th book for the year so far - Dilirium by Lauren Oliver. It was one of those what popped up as a book that was purchased by others who had read the one I was looking at on Amazon, so I added it to my wish list and eventually got it. I had never heard of this author before, but am loving the book - it's very different to the type of thing I normally read, which is perhaps why - I am looking forward to reading the sequel next.
  2. Roy Ayres - Fever
  3. Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
  4. Of course you can join us Bree - the more the merrier ! I have lost 1/2 a stone since Christmas which isn't too bad. My clothes are a little bit looser, although not as much as you would expect. I exercise plenty at work and so don't need to worry about that too much. I am off to Lundy in a weeks time as well where if the weather is anything like today, I should get plenty of walking done.
  5. Yes wasn't it. That sort of thing sadly still happens. We have a lady in the nursing home where I work who lost both her legs due to neglect from the hospital she was in after breaking her hip. She copes with it well though and is quite philosophical about it all, but things like that just should not happen full stop. My own parents although brought up in the area, left in the mid 1950's around the time that the books are set, after they got married, initially to Essex, and later Surrey. My grandparents on Mum's side were considered rich as they ran a greengrocers shop, although their 9 kids (Mum was the youngest) still slept 4 to a bed.
  6. I have read all the Jennifer Worth books one after the other when they first came out - apart from her last one which was published last year. There is some overlap in the different books with regard to the characters, but overall I enjoyed them tremendously. My own parents were born in that part of the East End, and so it helped me to understand a lot of their own humour, and where some of my own ways have come from.
  7. You could always try a home made biryani Booknutt, assuming your system can handle it. I don't cook it very often, but when I do it's really simple to make and cheap. It's just brown rice, with whatever veggies you fancy, and for the spices one of those packets that you buy in the supermarket. The one I buy is designed for a chicken biryani, but the spices themselves are of course vegetarian, so I just leave out the chicken. Just chuck it all in the pan with boiling water and cook it all up. Simple, cheap, healthy and delicious. You can even eat it with lettuce if you really want !
  8. Everything Must Change - Walter Jackson (RIP)
  9. Mine is easy - a copy of my own book, hot off the press, which I received about 2 days after it was printed in June 2006.
  10. The Bottle - Gil Scott Heron
  11. Things can only get better - D-ream
  12. Completed Sri Lanka - Mosquito by Roma Tearne, on 14th, but I was so tired last night, I did not round to writing the review until this morning. This was a beautifully written book, written by an author born in Sri Lanka, but now living in Oxford, and working as both an author and an artist (and this really shows in her work - the lead characters in this, her first novel are an artist and a writer respectively). This book which was published in 2010, was justifably imo nominated for the Costa Prize, although I don't think it won it.
  13. Good to see you still chugging away Janet - I have just finished Sri Lanka, so am about to go and update mine also, and write a review. I know it's early, but 7.20am isa lie in for me, as I normally have to get up at 6am !
  14. Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent - Gwen Guthrie
  15. MIne is easy - John Handy - Hard Work !
  16. Days Gone By - Dirty Vegas
  17. Don't Leave me this Way - Thelma Houston (far and away the best version imo, although Teddy Pendergrass was good too - RIP).
  18. Dancing in the Streets - Martha Reeves and the Vandellas
  19. Groove Armada - At the River
  20. Girls - Moments and Whatnauts
  21. Give me Lovin' - Goloka
