  1. Despite having many, many books still waiting to be read on my TBR mountain, when I was given this recently (it apparently came free with a paper) I decided to read it straight away.

I only have about 50 pages to go, and so far have really enjoyed the fast paced action, the rapid but seamless throwing-in of concepts into the story and the characters. I'll edit to include my thoughts once I've finished, but I'd say this is an absorbing and well described story. :)

Glad you are enjoying it, Chrissy :) I found it very engaging from the first few chapters. I'm trying to get ahold of the second one now.

  2. After saying Laura should go before, I think its a shame she went on a week when other people around her performed worse, and actually some of the things she said made a lot of sense. When she criticized she was right (suggesting Knightsbridge was a bad place to look for the truffle). I think Stella and Liz both did worse but had a much better track record. I was surprised at Liz sniping at Stella about the boardroom back in the house. It was a little bitchy. She should expect the boardroom to get heated and not bitch about it afterwords. Still, the right person went.

Haha I actually have a soft spot for Stuart. Yes he can be an idiot but he has some redeeming qualities and is very entertaining.

I felt that was a bit petty. With that type of contest you expect to have to fight for your place, there is no need to bring it up after the fact.

  3. I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 last weekend. I liked it, I can't wait for the next one in July!

The Time Traveller's Wife is another film I watched this week. It was the first time seeing it, I loved it and cried my eyes out. I'm such a sap :P

  4. I read Dissolution for the first time a few months back, thoroughly enjoyed it :) Being a history geek and a lover of mysteries, it has everything I want from a novel.

I don't know why I haven't read the rest yet. So many books and so little time, I guess!

  5. I finished Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs. Wasn't that impressed. I never really am with her books, but sometimes I think I'll give them another go.

Read about half of The Woman in Black. I get a very gothic, wintery feeling from this book. Perfect for a dark afternoon after just putting up the Christmas tree :) Shall continue with that this afternoon, then onto Mistletoe Mysteries, a collection of stories edited by Charlotte Macleod.

  6. So Anne stayed in again its getting to be a bit of a farce, most of the dancers made huge mistakes on Saturday but I still think the biggest was letting Anne continue, there are loads of people on the BBC forum who don't want her there but they are obviously not the ones voting for her. I did feel a little sorry for Scott he just looked blank. I think the next to go should be Anne but Gavin not far behind he might look pretty but he has no sense of dance at all.

Completely agree! What keeps making me mad too is Gavin constantly repeating "I think I did alright."

    NO, you didn't!

  7. Singles:

A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien

And Then There Were None - Agatha Christie

    Series:

    Harry Potter - J.K.Rowling

Choose Your Own Adventure - various authors

Sweet Valley High - Francine Pascal and ghostwriters

Nancy Drew - various authors as Carolyn Keene

    Star Wars - various authors

    Peter Rabbit - Beatrix Potter

The Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis

    James Bond - Ian Fleming

    Twilight - Stephenie Meyer

Those are the ones I've brought. I've read a few of the others.

  8. In general, the prices of ebooks for the Sony Readers are more expensive than the Kindle versions, even with this price hike - which only affects some Kindle versions, far from all - at the moment, anyway.

For instance, the Kindle version of Lee Child's latest (Worth Dying For) is £6.64, whereas Waterstones want £13.58 for the equivalent ePub version. That's an extreme, but you see what I'm getting at.

Don't let it put you off altogether :)

    I won't :) I'm still going to ask for a Kindle, I think.

I'm a reviewer so I tend to get all of my e-books free. I think I've only ever purchased one for my Sony reader.

  9. I'm really looking forward to the Dr. Who special, but - having said that - I'll watch anything with Karen Gillan in it. Um. Yeah. Completely for her acting ability, of course... :D

    :giggle: Completely...

I went to the Dr. Who stag show in Brum just over a month ago. I actually quiet enjoyed it.

Looking forward to the new series next year, although I hear they are splitting it in two.

  10. Oh don't say that, it would be rubbish if she did, I turn the tv over when she is on, I can't watch the awfulness of her dancing. I think Kara does ahve a good chance as does Matt, Scott I think is good but not as good, I like seeing Pamela in the mix and dancing so well and enjoying herself, I think its great that they have a talented older woman doing so well, she does not look 61 and given that there are 2 years between her and Ann Widdicombe (Ann being older) there is a world of difference in their attitudes.

Completely agree :) My only problem is I find James Jordan terribly obnoxious after a while and he starts to grate on my nerves!

I'm really starting to dislike Ann, she doesn't even seem to try; she just stomps around...it's annoying.

Looking forward to tomorrow's show already.

  11. Yes, they're both great .. but it would be nice to see a female in the final .. surely Kara deserves to be there.

I really like Kara too. Their American Smooth on Saturday was lovely :)

I have a very odd sinking feeling that Ann is going to win :(

  12. These sound quite interesting.... just HOW Young Adult-ish are they? Bordering on adult or bordering on children's? I might like these if they lean more towards adult, but I doubt I would otherwise.

Young Adult books can vary so greatly in level of maturity/tone!

I enjoyed Witch and Wizard because it bordered on the adult side of YA. My local library had shelved it in the adult section! The two main characters are 18 and 16 (I think) but very mature. It's well written and the language used is more adult.

I'm always very wary of YA books, I try to avoid the ones bordering on the children side. I would highly recommend it.

  13. Has anyone read the first book in this new series by James Patterson?

Witch and Wizard - book one

You are holding an urgent and vital narrative that reveals the forbidden truth about our perilous times....

This is the astonishing testimonial of Wisty and Whit Allgood, a sister and brother who were torn from their family in the middle of the night, slammed into prison, and accused of being a witch and a wizard. Thousands of young people have been kidnapped; some have been accused; many others remain missing. Their fate is unknown, and the worst is feared—for the ruling regime will stop at nothing to suppress life and liberty, music and books, art and magic...and the pursuit of being a normal teenager.

Witch and Wizard: The Gift - book two

When Whit & Wisty were imprisoned by the wicked forces of the totalitarian regime known as the New Order, they were barely able to escape with their lives. Now part of a hidden community of teens like themselves, Whit and Wisty have established themselves as leaders of the Resistance, willing to sacrifice anything to save kids kidnapped and brutally imprisoned by the New Order.

But the One has other plans in store for them: He needs Wisty, for she is "The One Who Has the Gift." While trying to figure out what that means, Whit and Wisty's suspenseful adventures through Overworld and Shadowland lead to a jaw-dropping climax and conclusion: the highly-anticipated fulfillment of the heart-pounding opening prologue of book one... The Execution of the Allgoods.

The second book isn't out until December 13th, but I can highly recommend the first one! :D

  14. I haven't been to a bookshop or the library for ages, work has been manic. Must make time this weekend.

Still reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, only have another 200 pages to go.

Did finish an ARC of The Raising by Laura Kasischke. Beautifully written, poignant and full of suspense. It's not released until next year, but I would look out for it if you like mysteries with a twist.

  15. It would appear that there has been some changes with prices for the kindle e-books. As far as I understand, Amazon set their own prices, but some of the bigger publishers are now doing so, and the prices are higher. So it might be worth taking at look at which books are available at which prices before you decide.

That has just put me off asking for one. I don't want to pay £10 for an e-book when you don't really have a physical copy to handle.

When I first brought my Sony reader the beauty of e-books was the price - slightly cheaper than paper copies.

I think it's going to put people off trying readers to be honest.
