  1. That takes me back. I did The Little Prince for O level French
  2. Now, my German's pretty basic, but even I can see they've been creative with those translations
  3. Received a copy of Oranges and Sunshine by Margaret Humphreys in the post today - a promotional freebie, I think, to tie in with a recent film. It's the story of how a social worker from Nottingham stumbled across the fact that thousands of children had been sent to the Colonies, by the British Government, over many decades, and how she brought the scandal to light, reunited many families and even forced an apology from the Prime Minister. Sounds like a good read.
  4. Yes, Cloudstreet was a good 'un, wasn't it? I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but I'd certainly recommend it.
  5. Hey carm, long time no hear! Happy birthday - hope you have a great day!

  6. OK, but you'd better be patient, Kylie. Big book, sloooooowww reader ....
  7. The Stephanie Plum series is good fun, pickle, and it's not really "chicklit" so much as knockabout crime fiction - even my brother-in-law enjoys them, and he's about as far from being a "reader" as you could get. Like all series, there comes a time when you've had enough, but that's probably quite a long way down the line, I'd say. Enjoy!
  8. That brings to mind The Unfortunates by B S Johnson, which was another "experimental" book. Apparently you got the chapters loose, in a box, and apart from the first and last chapters, you could read them in any order you liked. I never have done, by the way ....
  9. I've decided to go with London Calling by Barry Miles - "a countercultural history of London since 1945". Lots of bohemians, artists, Soho drunks and hippies, by the look of things. I should be right at home
  10. Hi Tish, and welcome to the Forum. You'll find plenty of crime and horror fans here, that's for sure.
  11. There's no such thing as just another member, Lisa - you're all important! Welcome to the Forum - I was in Vienna in December, and it was a beautiful city (but very cold )
  12. On the radio, it's The Crown by Gary Byrd. I've not heard that in absolutely YONKS!
  13. Hi Kylie, thanks for your good wishes. How are the Panthers doing?* Polished off William Boyd's Restless last night. It's not a bad book - the main plot (daughter finds out her mother was a wartime spy, and the past comes back to haunt her) is well worked out, although the side plot about the daughter doesn't really play out, in my view. But a decent read, for all that. Now, what next? * I know the answer to that, by the way
  14. Hi Marcia, how are things with you? No, I haven't been around too much recently, to my eternal shame, but I've promised I'll try and get a bit more involved again. So you'd better start honing that razor-sharp wit ....

  15. Thanks poppy, had a nice day and, as it's my wife's birthday on Sunday, we're off for a joint Big Day Out today. Hope things are OK with you - time to swap a few more song titles, maybe :)

  16. Just started William Boyd's Restless, which has been looking at me from the shelf for years (it seems like). I'm quite enjoying it so far - I've been promising myself I'd get round to one of his books some day. Not been around BCF for a while, but I'll try and get a bit more involved again. I've just signed up to the BCF Facebook Group page, and I'll put a linky thingy to me (on the appropriate thread, so Michelle doesn't tell me off ....)
  17. Thanks, Chrissy. Haven't been around here for a while, but I'll try to get a bit more involved again. I've just joined the BCF Facebook page - well, it's a start! Hope you're well, look forward to resuming operations here!

  18. I'm On The Outside (Looking In) - Little Anthony and the Imperials
  19. Long time no hear! How are you keeping? And what are the Cornish chances of hosting the tournament in 2026?

Agree with you there, Kylie. He's a tough Aussie cricketer. That'll do for me any day.

Two run outs in the first innings of a Test match is pretty poor stuff, you've got to say.
  22. Happy birthday! Hope you have a great day.

You haven't missed much by the sound of things, Kylie, unless you enjoy watching batsmen improve their averages. I bet Geoff Boycott's as sick as a pig .... Next one's in Adelaide. Maybe there'll be a bit more for the bowlers there.
  25. A Night To Remember - Shalamar
